Oh La La TANGO

The Heavenly Story behind Oh La La Tango…

From the heavenly heights of beauty and consciousness, descending through the voluptuous clouds of the rooftop Yun Bar, appear the LALAs - 3 messengers and goddesses of femininity, briefly touching the Earth and our hearts through the graces of the Peninsula Hotel on Friday evening, August 29th 2014.

Flowing sensuously through the elegant spaces of this magnificent hotel, the LALAs come to rest, re-cycle and rejuvenate on the 4th floor in the MAUS Artist In Residence Studio suite, the earthly residence of the creator of the LALAs, painter, sculptress, performance artist Aima St-Hunon.

Re-emerging from her latest work celebrating eco-consciousness and creative, sustainable living, the Crystal Cocoon, the LALAs hear the passionate call of humanity..

Sirens of Heaven drawn by Sirens of Earth.

The LALA goddesses, hearing the earthy, seductive sounds of Bukapu below , become the Sirens of Heaven drawn by Sirens of Earth, down through the 3rd and 2nd gallery floors, dancing and interacting with Aima St-Hunon’s sensual paintings and sculptures among the over 60 works and installations by fellow MAUS Artist In Residence Bei Shui.

The LALA’s can smell earthly passion…

Following the sensual music from below, the LALAs descend the classic white bridge of the Peninsula, emerging from between the White Stone Polo Horses to get closer to the earthy, elegant sounds of Bukapu and the people in the luxurious main lobby.

Argentine Tango, the most passionate dance on earth.

Resembling scores of free butterflies attracted to the beauty and vital nectar of Bei Shui’s oversize flowers and freed of their own Crystal Cocoon, the LALAs discover and join the many friends of MAUS and aficionados of Argentine Tango filling the lobby with the most passionate dance on earth.

Bukaopu Concert Saloon - a most seductive, exciting, irreverent variety of entertainment

Delighted to share their expressions of femininity and the connection between Heaven, Earth and People, the LALAs enter the Bukaopu Concert Saloon, a new and exciting, seductive and irreverent variety of earthly entertainment. The heavenly LALAs are drawn to dance with Bukaopu, bringing Aima’s sculptures to life and evoking the spirits of passion, femininity, and the shameless celebration of the feminine form in both men and women.

Finally, having fanned the fires of passion and stimulated guests and visitors with their message of love and Lifestyle Of Health, Happiness And Sustainability, the LALAs ascend back among the heavenly clouds of the rooftop YUN Bar.

This was a quick idea I got when I was showing my brother how this technique works. As you can see, its basically capturing his "conscience" with good and bad on either side of him. I wasn't too fond of the outcome, I thought it came out kind of sloppy. I might try it again in the future to really get it right. I'm doing a lot of experimenting with different things. :)

November 20th is Black Conscience Day in Brazil and is remembered as the one on which ZUMBI, a black slave hero who fought in the 1690s against the colonizers, died.

Official history has selected May 13th, the day when Princess Isabel signed the Lei Áurea (Abolition of Slavery Law), as the symbolic mark of the end of slavery in this country. However, black movements have selected November 20th, the day of Zumbi’s death, as Black Conscience Day.

The celebration of Black Conscience Day started in 1978, on the initiative of the Unified Black Movement (MNU), a political organization against racial discrimination.

Whilst looking deeply into this fantastic image by Tatiana Cardeal, listen to our music, Valor Negro (Negro Value), a historic reflection of the Negro’s plight for freedom and justice, created and performed by the kids in our programme.

You can imagine the suffering of generations of our African brothers and sisters! But has anything really changed?

The song is also the basis for our first Music Video Clip, being filmed on location at Hummingbird and in our community, where scenes like the one above are to be incorporated.

A woman inside the narrow streets of Shahi Muhala is seen standing at her door step.

Brothel is always high during the whole year, with allot of women involed in such activities!

Situated in the east end of Salisbury Cathedral - in the Trinity Chapel - this is the Prisoners of Conscience stained glass window, which was designed in 1980 by Gabrielle Loire from Chartres, France.

Just below this striking window to the left can be seen the candle for Amnesty International, burning brightly for all prisoners of conscience around the world. Unlike all the other stained glass windows in Salisbury Cathedral, which adhere to the classical style of art, these stained glass windows are very "modern" in style.

November 20th is Black Conscience Day in Brazil and is remembered as the one on which ZUMBI, a black slave hero who fought in the 1690s against the colonizers, died.

This last series of photos was taken during last week’s filming of our first Music Video Clip, Valor Negro (Negro Value). Above, kids from Capoeira Beija-Flor prepare for a sequence in the video clip, the vibrant folcloric dance called Maculelê, which is closeley connected to Capoeira.

The music video project is part of the practical training curricula for the students of the professional media courses offered by SENAC - Serviço Nacional de Aprendizagem Comercial (National Service of Commercial Apprenticeship), and the continuation of a recent experience we had with the school on a similar music video project for a professional band, which was filmed at Hummingbird.

SENAC was created by the National Confederation of Commerce and has been active throughout Brazil since 1946. SENAC offers educational and professional training courses in a variety of areas such as; Hotel and Tourism, Gastronomy and Nutrition, Languages, Cinema, Video and TV, Radio and Audio, Arts and Culture, Journalism and Publicity, Photography, Administration and Marketing, Health and Beauty, Fashion and Design, Environment, Gardening and Landscaping, Multimedia and Graphics Design, Third Sector, Telecommunications, Computers and Internet...etc.

The institutional mission of SENAC is to provide development through knowledge, to people and organisations, by means of educational actions with a commitment to social responsibility.

PETA protest in downtown Columbus. They claim that a pound of meat uses the same amount of water as six months of showers.

A sticky note, I found on the window door at pacific centre in downtown Vancouver. I like the message, let your conscience do the guiding.

Sampson has been our buddy since 2004. In the winter of 2008, he suffered a severe perineal hernia that required a $2000 surgery to repair it. At the time of the surgery, we were told that due to the severity of the hernia that it was likely to reoccur. As predicted, it has reoccurred and he desperately needs more surgery. Other than the hernia, he is a happy, healthy and active dog who should live to his mid to late teens. Therefore, I cannot in good conscience end his life prematurely. I have also contacted a Corgi rescue in hopes that he could be adopted to a family that is more financially able to care for him. However, since my husband and I can't have children, giving him up for adoption because of health issues seems as ridiculous to us as giving up our 9 year old child for adoption because we can't keep up with the medical expenses. So please consider donating whatever small amount you can to help keep Sampson with the family that loves him. Sampson, his Corgi buddies Shiloh & Rusty and his human family thank you! Click on the link below to go to Sampson's ChipIn.com page to make your donation. THANK YOU!!

Pricke of Conscience Window (detail), c1410. Depicting the events of the last fifteen days of the world as told in a medieval poem 'The Pricke of Conscience.'

The iconography of this window is unique in European art. It is based on an anonymous Middle English poem called the Pricke of Conscience. The text of the Pricke of Conscience was concerned with the final fifteen days of the world. The window reads from bottom left to top right with each of the final days given a separate panel with a Middle English text that paraphrases the poem. The first nine panels are concerned with the physical destruction of the earth. This begins with the seas rising and falling and giving up monsters that 'make a roaring that is hideous to mans hearing.' Then follows the destruction of buildings by an earthquake (see the new-built spire of All Saints falling), and the burning of all physical matter. The last panels illustrate the fate of frightened mankind, and the end of all things. Men hide in holes, emerging only to pray. Finally on the fourteenth day 'all that lives then shall die, both children, men and women.' The end of things comes, the stars fall from the sky, the bones of the dead rise, and finally the 'the world burns on every side'. As its name suggest the window is intended to be a moralistic call to repentance, so as a reminder of this, in the quatrefoil tracery lights at the top of the window, are two panels that show redeemed souls being let into heaven by St Peter and the dammed being taken to hell by demons. It is thought that members of the Henryson and Hessle families paid for this window. Both families, related by marriage, were among the freemen, who were the urban elite of medieval York. The kneeling figures of the families at the base of the window are particularly expressive and seem to look on in horror at the events going on in the panels above.

If societies are to thrive, not just survive, there must be a set of common values that undergird social and governmental interactions. Values are often derived from religion, yet there is deep misunderstanding among and between people of different faith (and no faith) backgrounds, which can threaten the social cohesion of communities. Our times suggest that values may not be common—within or across groups—and that religions are being manipulated (sometimes by governments) for the benefit of majority groups. This has led towards increased segmentation and polarization in societies, which has been exploited by those seeking to foment division.
