The Judgement Porch.
After the conquest of England, William the Conqueror embarked upon a programme of cathedral building throughout the country. In 1072 William instructed Bishop Remigius to move the seat of the diocese from Dorchester on Thames to Lincoln. The diocese stretched from the Humber in the north, to the Thames in the south.
Building a cathedral required a huge work force of skilled craftsmen and labourers who worked from sunrise to sunset. It is estimated that £2,000 a year was spent on building the Cathedral; nearly £5,000,000 in today's money.
In 1185 the Cathedral was partly destroyed by an earthquake, leaving only the Norman west front which still stands today.
In 1186, Hugh of Avalon accepted the post of Bishop of Lincoln and began to organise the rebuilding of the Cathedral. Work began in 1192 at the east end and continued until around 1245 when it joined the existing west front. The restoration is said to have been paid for by local people, including, famously, the Swineherd of Stow who gave his meagre life savings towards the great work. His statue sits on the northwest turret opposite that of Saint Hugh on the southwest.
Much of the design and construction of the Cathedral was experimental and in 1237 the central tower collapsed. It was replaced by 1311 with a tower topped with a spire making the Cathedral approximately 525 feet high (160m) and reputedly the tallest building in the world for nearly 238 years. In 1548 the central spire fell down in a storm and had to be removed. It was never replaced.

A gig poster I designed back in October for one of my dad's friends to celebrate the 42nd Anniversary of his first band, Conqueror Worm opening two shows for The Cream in 1968. Not many people get to say they opened for Eric Clapton so my dad and I thought it'd be a cool idea to recreate a poster for him. The Grade I Listed Lincoln Castle, in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.
Lincoln Castle was built during the late 11th century by William the Conqueror on the site of a pre-existing Roman fortress. The castle is unusual in that it has two mottes. It is only one of two such castles in the country, the other being at Lewes in Sussex.
When William the Conqueror defeated Harold Godwinson and the English at The Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066, he continued to face resistance to his rule in the north of England. For several years, William's position was very insecure. To project his influence northwards to control the people of the Danelaw, he constructed a few major castles in the north and midlands of England. It was at this time major castles at Warwick, Nottingham, and York were built. After gaining control of York, the Conqueror turned southwards and arrived at the Roman and Viking city of Lincoln.
When William reached Lincoln, he found a Viking commercial and trading centre with a population of 6,000 to 8,000. The remains of the old Roman walled fortress located 60 metres above the countryside to the south and west, proved an ideal strategic position to construct a new castle. Lincoln represented a vital strategic crossroads of the the same routes which influenced the siting of the Roman fort: Ermine Street, Fosse Way, Valley of the River Trent, River Witham & Lincolnshire Wolds
A castle here could guard several of the main strategic routes and form part of a network of strongholds of the Norman kingdom to control the country internally. Also, it could form a centre from which troops could be sent to repel Scandinavian landings anywhere on the coast from the Trent to the Welland, to a large extent, by using the roads which the Romans had constructed for the same purpose.
The castle was the focus of attention during the First Battle of Lincoln which occurred on 2 February 1141, during the struggle between King Stephen and Empress Matilda over who should be monarch in England. It was held but damaged, and a new tower, called the Lucy Tower, was built.
Lincoln Castle was again the site of a siege followed by the Second Battle of Lincoln, on 20 May 1217, during the reign of King John in the First Barons' War. This was the period of political struggle which led to the signing of Magna Carta on 15 June 1215.
As in Norwich and other places, the castle was used as a secure site in which to establish a prison. At Lincoln, the prison Gaol was built in 1787 and extended in 1847. Imprisoned debtors were allowed some social contact but the regime for criminals was designed to be one of isolation, according to the separate system. Consequently, the seating in the prison chapel is designed to enclose each prisoner individually so that the preacher could see everyone, but each could see only him. By 1878 the system was discredited, and the inmates were transferred to the new jail in the eastern outskirts of Lincoln.

Welcome to David Broderick Tower. Located on Woodward Avenue in Grand Circus Park, this 37-story building opened as Detroit's second-tallest building in 1928. Like many of Detroit's skyscrapers, it has amazing neo-classical architecture inside and out. Motown Construction Inc recently purchased the building and plans to renovate the tower into apartments in 2008. Pre-renovation work started several months ago on the ground floor with a restaurant that opened especially for the Super Bowl in Detroit. But for now, it's still known as "the tallest abandoned building in America."
You may recognize Broderick Tower for the huge "Whaling Wall" mural of humpback whales on the rear facade of the building. This was painted in 1997 by Metro-Detroit native Wyland, an eco-artist who has painted whales on the buildings of most major U.S. cities. The mural was covered by an ad for Jeep before the Tigers went to the World Series in Fall 2006 (you can see the building from the baseball stadium).
I identified myself to the lone security guard as an insurance adjuster for one of the contractors and met up with Cave and Vanessa who had already successfully passed security. It was a great day for "urban exploring" We climbed 36 flights of steps in blackness with nothing but a flash light to guide our way. We stopped every few floors to snap some pics and give our lungs a break from the airborne dust. A few freakish moments of "did you hear that" and some creepy leftovers from squatters and junkies kept us on our toes. Many of these images show how the building was left in the early eighties when Detroit's economy collapsed. Many of these images tell a story of the glorious days when the Broderick was bustling, while many more images raise more questions than answers... Many had spelunked this building before us, but it was nice to be one of the last to capture its rooms in all their decaying glory before this building sees a rebirth. Enjoy!

Conquering Lion is dub/reggae/hardcore band from Tetovo (Macedonia) who started his opus in April 2007. In October 2009 the band release his first album (LP) simply titled as “I” for PMG Recordings on which you can hear 10 songs including the collaboration with the Jamaican artist Jah Clarity on the song “Jah Love”. Until now, besides the performances through Macedonia, the band has performed in Germany, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Kosovo. The second album was released on 26th of August 2011 and after that the band toured the Balkan from 1st to 25th of September. Until now Conquering Lion has performed with some bigger names in the reggae scene like Gentleman, Ras Zacharri, Donald Minott, Hornsman Coyote...At the moment the band is working on the upcoming third album and a video for the song "Fire" which came out as a single from the second album.
I just finished this painting for my church. The painting is 26" x 19.5" on Arches hotpress 156lb watercolor paper. Painting was done using DaVinci Fluid Acrylic paint.
Like a conqueror raising its flag against a defeated foe, Sterling Bay's "Lincoln Yards" banners are seen at the former site of the A. Finkl Steel Mill. Well Finkl isn't really "vanquished" as the company did move to a newer facility on Chicago;'s South Side (and more importantly kept its jobs within the city).
I'm all for progress yet with the demolition of the former Finkl Steel Plant, I think a vast amount of the neighborhood's history was ripped away. Will the area be overbuilt with McCondos devoid of any real character (as what seems to be happening in other parts of the city)?
