The township of Stone Hut, which takes its name from a hut that marked a changing place for mail horses in the early days when mails were taken by coach from Adelaide to Port Augusta, and other northern towns, situated about halfway between Laura and Wirrabara was en fete on Wednesday.

The occasion was the laying of the foundation stone for a soldiers' memorial hall, which when completed will be a fine memorial not only to the men and lads of the district who responded to the call of king and country, but also to the whole-hearted united efforts of a comparatively small community. Plans and specifications for the hall, which provides for a main assembly hall, were prepared by Mr C G Maywald, of Laura. The residents of the district are providing, free of cost to the committee, all the sandstone and gravel required for the building. The hall will cost about £700. Messrs J H Acott (mason work) and C G Maywald (carpentering) are the contractors.

Mrs W T Baker laid the foundation stone by reason of her long association with the township, and particularly in view of the fact that three of her sons were among the early volunteers for service with the AIF abroad: two of whom made the supreme sacrifice.

Mrs Baker, who was presented with an inscribed silver trowel, performed the ceremony. Addresses were given by the Mayor of Laura (Mr J Watt) and Mr N L McLeod (head teacher Stone Hut School).

Donations amounting to £34 15/ were placed on the stone.

Afternoon tea and a dance followed.

Messrs J H Acott and C G Maywald gave the marble tablet for the foundation stone. [Register 27-7-1925]

SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL HALL AT STONE HUT

On Wednesday [24 March] at Stone Hut, a soldiers' memorial hall was opened. The site is on the main road.

The structure includes a main assembly hall 30ft. by 60 ft, of which 13 ft. has been reserved for stage purposes, and an anteroom 10ft x 38 ft.

Up to date the expense incurred in connection with the building and furnishing of the hall, which includes a piano, is £1,057. When the celebration proceedings were begun on Wednesday afternoon the amount owing was: £300 – a wonderful performance for such a small community. This has been made possible only through wholehearted cooperation of all the residents, the ladies having played a very prominent part. If to the amount above stated, even on conservative lines, is added the value of material donated and work done, the building, with its furnishing, represent an outlay of about £2,000, and the committee is hopeful that as a result of their effort on Wednesday and the returns from the luncheon and afternoon tea booth at the Laura Races on Easter Monday, to have the whole free of debt.

The opening ceremony was performed by the Hon A P Blesing, MLC, Mr H W Inglis (secretary and treasurer) gave a brief account of the movement which had been brought to such a successful issue. The Hon A P Blesing MLC congratulated the people of Stone Hut on the success of their efforts.

In a spacious marquee at the rear of the hall … afternoon tea and supper were provided.

Supper and a dance followed, music being supplied by Mrs H R Neale, of Murray Town. The gross proceeds amounted to about £180, and it is anticipated that £150 will be paid into the credit of the funds as the result of the celebrations.

DANAT DUBAI

On St. Nicholas Day, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Okhmatdyt National Specialized Children's Hospital, particularly the department where children are treated for mine-blast injuries caused by Russian aggression.

Anastasia, 16, from Chornobaivka, Victoria, 14, from Kherson, and Alina, 16, from Mykolaiv, were injured during shelling when enemy shells hit their homes. The girls have already undergone amputations and surgeries and are now awaiting prosthetics and continuing rehabilitation.

Three-year-old Oleksandra from Sumy was also at home when a ballistic missile hit her house. Doctors had to amputate three of her fingers. Her father, a police officer, is also receiving treatment, after being injured in his legs by a second “Shahed” drone hit while clearing the rubble at the Sumy Regional Clinical Hospital.

The President spoke with the children, their parents, and doctors. He congratulated the young patients on the holiday and wished them speedy healing and recovery.

According to the doctors, since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, they have already treated 126 children injured as a result of the Russian aggression.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also visited patients in the bone marrow transplantation department, the youngest of whom is only seven months old.

“Today is Ukraine’s Armed Forces Day and St. Nicholas Day. I have the pleasure of congratulating you on this holiday. I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery. I wish us to see your smiles,” he said.

The Head of State discussed with the young patients their well-being and dreams. They shared their personal stories of fighting for life. In particular, the donor for seven-year-old Roman from Kurakhove, who lost his mother, was his brother, a serviceman. The warrior came from the front for this purpose and later returned to defend Ukraine.

The children presented Volodymyr Zelenskyy with their drawings, recited poems, and received gifts on the occasion of St. Nicholas Day.

This is a photograph from the second running of the Athlone Flatline Half Marathon ("The Flatline") was held at Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Saturday 14th September 2013 at 11:00. There was beautiful weather for the event which started and finished at St. Aloysius College near the Canal Banks area of the town just slightly west of the River Shannon. This event was professionally organised and the very flat course meant that many runners both seasoned and new to the scene achieved season or personal bests. Almost 1,000 participants successfully completed the event in the beautiful September sunshine. Everyone involved must be congratulated for the flawless running of the event. This event is sure to go from strength to strength over the coming years. The "Flatline" also included an option for a full marathon which was fully supported by the Marathon Club of Ireland and the East of Ireland Marathon Series. This allowed participants to run the Flatline twice for the qualifying marathon distance. About 80 people took part.

This is a photograph which is part of a larger set of photographs taken at the start and finish of "The Flatline" 2013. The URL of the main set is www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157635495089498/. There are some photographs of the finishers of the marathon.

Overall Race Summary

Participants: Such is the popularity of the race this year that registration closed for the race in mid-August 2013. There were well over 1,000 participants who took to the start line.

Weather: The weather on the day was almost perfect for running. The runners were bathed in warm September sunshine for the duration of the race and into the early afternoon. In the sections of the race out towards Clonown and around the Bord na Mona areas there was a stiff breeze but nothing major.

Course: "The Flatline" ceratinly lived up to its name. It is as flat a course as one is likely to find. A garmin connect gps trace of the route is provided here [connect.garmin.com/activity/199678412] Geographically the course spends much of the race in County Roscommon with only the first and last kilometers actually in County Westmeath. This gives geographically inclined runners the novel opportunity to race in two Irish provinces in one race. The course had distance markers at every kilometre and mile along the way. There were official pacers provided by the race organisers.

Location Map: Start/finish area and registration etc on Google StreetView [goo.gl/maps/8qCes] - Ample parking was supplied with some over-flow car-parking options also available.

Refreshments: An Alkohol Frei bottle of Erdinger was provided to every finisher as they crossed the line. Light refreshments were served.

How can I get full resolution copies of these photographs?

All of the photographs here on this Flickr set have a visible watermark embedded in them. All of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution WITHOUT watermark. We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us. This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

If you would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

This is a photograph from the second annual running of The Downs National School Valentines 5KM Road Race and Fun run which was held at The Downs GAA club, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath on Sunday February 9th 2013 at 12:00. The race was held as a fundraiser for the Downs National School. This is a very important fundraiser for the Downs National School new building project and the parents, teachers, and friends of the Downs National School and the neighbouring community are to be congratulated with the fabulous road race and social event that they organised. There was a great family atmosphere at the event and there was a very plentiful spread of refreshments afterwards in the Clubhouse. The event has grown strongly in it's second year. Community spirit was very evident. The Downs is part of the geographically very large parish of Kinnegad, Coralstown, and Clonard and there were many local participants from the parish. Well over 400 people took part in the event. The stormy wet weather of late cleared off. Whilst there was a strong headwind on the course for the final kilometer all in all the weather was very suitable for running.

The Downs is situated just off the M4 between Kinnegad and Mullingar and is accessed from Junction/Exit 14 on the M4 and following the R156.

The race starts on the Cloghan road (this is about 1KM from the GAA Clubhouse) and proceeds clock-wise around a circuit which takes in the main Killucan road. The race passes by the finish/race-hq on it's first loop. The road surface is a mixture of standard tarmacadam and gravel trail around by the forestry. Overall, the course is flat with just two very small hills for runners to content with. The course was very accurately measured and well marshalled.

The race is Athletics Association of Ireland approved. Timing was provided by Precision Timing who, as always, provided excellent timing and event management services on their day. Their website (with results from today's race) is available at: www.precisiontiming.net/result/racetimer

We captured a large set of photographs from the race today. The full set of photographs are available in the following Flickr set: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157640695491875/

In summary please remember when requesting photographs from us - all we ask is for you to provide a link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. Taking these photographs and preparing them for online posting does take a significant effort. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!
