The group had started their journey at a ‘depot,’ the home of Mary Meachum, a free woman of color and the widow of a prominent African American clergyman, John Berry Meachum. Some of the group was apprehended. Among them were Esther and her two children who belonged to Henry Shaw, a prominent St. Louisan.

Confluence of the Middle Fork (left) and South Fork (right) of the Kings River, California, seen from Yucca Point. This is the upstream end of the deepest canyon in North America.

The confluence of the rivers is at 2,260 feet elevation. Downstream from here, Spanish Mountain rises to 10,051 feet (3063 meters), but the river is only about 1,750 feet (535 meters) in elevation, creating a canyon that is approximately 8200 feet (2500 meters) deep. There is no maintained trail into the heart of the canyon, but expert kayakers occasionally hike down and navigate this stretch of river.

I titled this piece ‘Confluence’ because to me, it appears that many elements of the

photograph converge together: flowing, dripping streams of water; sunlight

that also appears to flow; the wet concrete and even the parallel lines of the

wooden bench steps. It was taken at California State University Amphitheater in

San Jose, CA in 1985; after a late afternoon rainstorm when the light was golden and the wooden seats and concrete were wet and saturated and reflecting a delicious gradation of colors in magenta, blue, and a pinkish kind of gold.
