I’ve shared a couple other images from the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, but this may be one of my favorites, taken at the confluence of the River Lethe and Knife Creek. It’s an otherworldly scene and very hard to describe in words. For the last 100 years these rivers have cut their way through the thick layers of lava deposited after a volcanic eruption that lasted 60 hours and let loose 4 cubic miles of ash. That’s about 30 times the amount of underground magma of the Mt Saint Helens eruption in 1980.

Named for the confluence of the Casselman and Youghiogheny Rivers and Laurel Hill Creek, this charming valley village is a favorite stop along the Great Allegheny Passage. The town motto,
“Where mountains touch rivers,” is fitting given that Confluence is surrounded by some of the highest ridges in Pennsylvania.

It snowed out in the suburbs, but here in downtown the temps stayed too warm and we got drizzle and sleet, but luckily not much.
While most people don't tend to like it, I'm a fan of this weather - from a photography perspective.
