Scrappy, independent, stubborn, confident, lovable, funny, smart and loyal. These words describe my Ralphie who passed away a few years ago. One blue eye and one brown eye that pierced your soul with love and pure joy. But OH there were days that were trying with his independent streak. But that was one of the reasons I loved him so much. I believe he was a cat in a dogs body.

Our boy Frenchie who is 15 years old now. He has earned the right to be exactly who he wants to be. He's a fun, lovable boy. Someone left him on the side of a busy road in a crate in New Jersey when he was a pup. My daughters family adopted him soon after and he became a part of our family. He migrated to my house about 7 years ago as this boy needs lots of exercise and I have acreage for him to run.

I have seen already so many pictures on flickr of flower fields in Holland and elswhere. So here are mine, both taken from a very low point of view.

A Fau de Verzy is either a Dwarf Beech (Fagus sylvatica variety tortuosa), a dwarf oak tree, or a dwarf chestnut tree.

These grow in the forest of Verzy, 25 km south of Reims in France. In this forest are less than a thousand dwarf beeches, some dozen dwarf oaks and some dwarf chestnuts.

They are not more than 4 or 5 metres (13 or 16 ft) high. In summer, they spread their leaves like heavy sun umbrellas; some looking like leaf igloos. In winter, their tortuous shape can be seen naked: trunks and branches are crooked, bent, twisted and pendulous to the ground. Such dwarf beeches are also known in other places: in Germany (in the Süntel area, not far from Hanover), in Sweden (at Dalby Söderskog National Park near Malmö, not far from the northern limit for this species), in Denmark, and in another place in France (in Lorraine). Nobody knows whether these plantings have the same origin or not. But there are too few such beeches in these two places to feel confident about the future of their population. The situation is healthier around the dwarf beeches of Verzy, especially now that the construction of a pathway enables visitors to admire them without making harmful trampling on the ground over the fragile roots. A fenced reserve also enables the preservation of a part of the population. With more than 1,000 dwarf beeches, the National Forest of Verzy is the world's principal reserve of dwarf beeches. Among them, the most specific ones were given a name inspired by their peculiar shapes:

•the Fau of the bride,

•the ox-head Fau,

•the Fau of the Young Lady (the legend says that Joan of Arc came and had a rest in this forest).

When you do a a self-drive 'safari' (i.e. without trackers and guides who are in radio contact) in one of South Africa's national parks, finding a leopard is the ultimate sighting. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park - where this leopard lives free and wild - is one of the world's largest national park systems, covering a total of 37 256 square kilometers (14 384.6 sq miles). The South African side has four tourist roads, two that cut across the dunes and two that follow the ancient riverbeds of the Nossob and the Auob.

Leopards in the Kgalagadi have the largest recorded ranges in the world - 2 104.4 square kilometers (812.5 sq miles) for males and 1 258.5 square kilometers (485.9 sq miles) for females.

The common blackbird (Turdus merula) is a species of true thrush. It is also called the Eurasian blackbird (especially in North America, to distinguish it from the unrelated New World blackbirds), or simply the blackbird where this does not lead to confusion with a similar-looking local species. It breeds in Europe, Asiatic Russia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to Australia and New Zealand. It has a number of subspecies across its large range; a few of the Asian subspecies are sometimes considered to be full species. Depending on latitude, the common blackbird may be resident, partially migratory, or fully migratory. The adult male of the common blackbird (Turdus merula merula which is the nominate subspecies), which is found throughout most of Europe, is all black except for a yellow eye-ring and bill and has a rich, melodious song; the adult female and juvenile have mainly dark brown plumage. This species breeds in woods and gardens, building a neat, mud-lined, cup-shaped nest. It is omnivorous, eating a wide range of insects, earthworms, berries, and fruits. 30730
