Thanks to everyone who gave their input yesterday! People pointed out that volume sliders and stars are both used for specific purposes (i.e. volume and ratings), and so shouldn't be used in other contexts. But, people also pointed out that the volume slider uses both the horizontal and vertical axis to communicate an increase, and so is more clear than some other methods.

I've tried to go for a hybrid approach that takes the advantages of blocks increasing in height from left to right, but that is hopefully without any baggage from other contexts.

Your thoughts?
