Lack of confidence in my own abilities and life is what keeps me from even attempting to take pictures of numerous things around me. Yet, during this assignment, I felt the urge to capture images of things that are significant in my life right at this moment in time. I was inspired to take the following pictures out of the need to remember what surrounds me and defines during my twenties. For one day I will grow older, wiser, and probably forget about whoever I am now. Although I do not know completely who that is at this time, but as I looked through the viewfinder of my compact camera, I felt a better understanding of who I am.
Before this assignment, I was rather passive aggressive and uncaring about the dull and drab world around me. However, the more I took pictures for this assignment, the more I began to see how colorful it kind of was. I found that I engaged in activities that before didn't seem as important until I saw how beautiful and fun it looked on camera. For example, playing chess is a hobby I have found very unappealing, yet in the photograph I took it looked somewhat more enticing especially with a challenging person playing it with me. On that note, the chess picture was probably was probably my most successful picture. I loved the way the lighting looked behind my boyfriend as he looked down so thoughtfully onto the chessboard. Sadly, I believe that was the only successful picture I had taken. My biggest disappointment had to be the pictures of my dog because no matter what I did to try to make her behave, it always seemed to make her look worse. In the end, I suppose I did my best at trying to portray my life to all of the viewers. It may not be very pleasing to the eyes, although at least I can say I have a beautiful life and I tried my best to capture all of its glory.
Thanks to everyone who gave their input yesterday! People pointed out that volume sliders and stars are both used for specific purposes (i.e. volume and ratings), and so shouldn't be used in other contexts. But, people also pointed out that the volume slider uses both the horizontal and vertical axis to communicate an increase, and so is more clear than some other methods.
I've tried to go for a hybrid approach that takes the advantages of blocks increasing in height from left to right, but that is hopefully without any baggage from other contexts.
