Conditions for creativity are to be puzzled; to concentrate; to accept conflict and tension; to be born everyday; to feel a sense of self. ~ Erich Fromm

Urbex is a shortened form of "Urban Exploration". It is the act of going to and exploring lost and forgotten places that are not normally visited or often even accessible to the general public. Such places might include abandoned factories, hospitals, schools, offices and other derelict buildings, unused nuclear bunkers, old military buildings, disused rail yards etc. The REAL urbexer will NOT break anything in (or to get into) these places. In fact it's considered VERY bad form. But if access can be obtained without causing any damage, then that's considered fair game. Vandalism and graffiti are NOT allowed. It's like nature photography: Leave only footprints, take only pictures. See more Urbex here.

Gullfoss ("Golden Falls"; About this sound Icelandic pronunciation (help·info) is a waterfall located in the canyon of the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland.

Gullfoss is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland. The wide Hvítá rushes southward, and about a kilometre above the falls it turns sharply to the right and flows down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" and then abruptly plunges in two stages (11 metres or 36 feet, and 21 metres or 69 feet) into a crevice 32 metres (105 ft) deep. The crevice, about 20 metres (66 ft) wide and 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) in length, extends perpendicular to the flow of the river. The average amount of water running down the waterfall is 140 cubic metres (4,900 cu ft) per second in the summer and 80 cubic metres (2,800 cu ft) per second in the winter. The highest flood measured was 2,000 cubic metres (71,000 cu ft) per second.

As one first approaches the falls, the edge is obscured from view, so that it appears that the river simply vanishes into the earth.

During the first half of the 20th century and some years into the late 20th century, there was much speculation about using Gullfoss to generate electricity. During this period, the waterfall was rented indirectly by its owners, Tómas Tómasson and Halldór Halldórsson, to foreign investors. However, the investors' attempts were unsuccessful, partly due to lack of money. The waterfall was later sold to the state of Iceland, and is now protected.

Sigríður Tómasdóttir, the daughter of Tómas Tómasson, was determined to preserve the waterfall's condition and even threatened to throw herself down. Although it is widely believed, the very popular story that Sigríður saved the waterfall from exploitation is untrue. A stone memorial to Sigriður, located above the falls, depicts her profile.

The road network of Madagascar, comprising about 4,500 unique roads spanning 31,640 kilometers (19,660 mi), is designed primarily to facilitate transportation to and from Antananarivo, the Malagasy capital. Transportation on these roads, most of which are unpaved and two lanes wide, is often dangerous. Few Malagasy own private vehicles; long-distance travel is often accomplished in taxi brousses ('bush taxis') which may be shared by 20 or more people.

While most primary roads are in good condition, the World Food Programme has classified nearly two-thirds of the overall road network as being in poor condition. These conditions may make it dangerous to drive at moderate-to-high speeds and dahalo (bandit) attacks pose a threat at low speeds. Many roads are impassable during Madagascar's wet season; some bridges (often narrow, one-lane structures) are vulnerable to being swept away. Few rural Malagasy live near a road in good condition; poor road connectivity may pose challenges in health care, agriculture, and education.

Drivers in Madagascar travel on the right side of the road. On some roads, to deter attacks from dahalo, the government of Madagascar requires that drivers travel in convoys of at least ten vehicles. Car collision fatalities are not fully reported, but the rate is estimated to be among the highest in the world. Random police checkpoints, at which travelers are required to produce identity documents, are spread throughout the country. Crops are transported by ox cart locally and by truck inter-regionally. Human-powered vehicles, once the only means of road transport, are still found in the form of pousse-pousses (rickshaws). Taxi brousses constitute a rudimentary road-based public transportation system in Madagascar. Rides on taxi brousses cost as little as 200 Malagasy ariary (roughly US$0.10) as of 2005, and vehicles involved are often overpacked, sometimes with the assistant driver riding on the outside of the vehicle. Stops on their routes are generally not fixed, allowing passengers to exit at arbitrary points.

A Mexican gray wolf keeps cool above a waterfall at the zoo. The wolves are very timid; I usually find them sleeping under the trees, far from the space provided to view them. I hope this wolf was able to keep cool, as I was also thankful for the photo opportunity!

A Korean fortune teller in Seoul. One can find all types of fortune tellers in South Korea. And they run the gamut from the very profitable ones, as the one picutured here, to the more common ones working out of far smaller quarters in old buildings. I took this shot on the run, not wanting to get hit by any airborne demons--incoming or outbound!

I have queried my adult students here about whether they have ever visited a fortune teller. The majority of them have but only once or twice. Many said they had gone with friends after having a few drinks. Just my opinion, but I think that one would have to look far and wide to find any fortune teller who is going to give a person any bad news.

Perhaps it's time for a couple of words about this series...

I was moved to explore how our matriarchy, with our ever-changing roles in our society, reacts to change.

My observations come from interactions on the media, and social networks, which led to the exploration of a collective reaction towards individuals that break the norm, and yet are still somehow a part of our hearts and souls.

Product of human condition. 1 out of 7 billion human realities. I cried. For a true understanding of this picture, zoom in and look into her eyes for a few seconds.

Lucknow, India, she was sitting under one of the city's old gates with thousands of cars passing by... within 2 feet of her. She appeared to be severely mentally handicapped. Looking at her cleaner clothes, I am assuming someone must be helping her. These are times when one feels utter helpless to do anything and disappointed with the human race...and frankly at oneself for not having done anything to help.

Best Air Conditioner Brand In World - Buying Guidehttps://www.thebestntop.com/2020/07/best-air-conditioner-brand-in-world.html

My dad caught Oscar's mother this morning. We had been conditioning her to a disabled trap the past two weeks since we rescued Oscar and on Monday we set the trap to work again. He only left the trap set while he was at work. At night when Dad went home he closed it up. She didn't enter the trap on Monday or Tuesday, but today she did go in and get caught. My dad phoned me at work and I went over right away and collected her. The vet clinic had room in their schedule to spay her today, so I took her straight to the vet clinic. She is now spayed and recovering in my spare room in the big dog crate.

She does seem to be quite tame, and I think she will be able to be adopted out fairly easily. I will start assessing her personality tomorrow. Either way she cannot go back to the farm yard, as it is not a very safe place for cats to be.

She was not nursing, her mammary glands were all dried up, so we now know there were no other kittens surviving than Oscar, if indeed she ever did have more than one kitten.

I am going to call her Alice!

One of my responsibilities at work is the condition of the runways and taxiways and ensuring compliance with CAA Regulations.

These require that all paved surfaces on an airports manoeuvring area are inspected on foot once a year - a walking inspection...

Last night was the night, but the weather was horrendous with fog and driving rain. We waited in the airports fire station for hours for an improvement but in the end cancelled - I will have to try again in a couple of weeks because now I'm off for a week in a cottage in the Brecon Beacons, middle of nowhere, no phone signal, no emails - bliss!

I managed to get a few shots - this is from the threshold of runway 27 with full CAT III Airfield Ground Lighting illuminated - and plenty of rain!
