Professor Donald Knuth held a Q&A session for the public in Brno at Masaryk University’s Faculty of Informatics last October.
Donald Knuth is an American computer scientist, mathematician and professor emeritus at Stanford University. He is the 1974 recipient of the ACM Turing Award, informally considered the Nobel Prize of computer science; the author of the multi-volume work The Art of Computer Programming; and the creator of the TeX computer typesetting system.

“Now when someone looks at me because I’m limping a little, I stop and ask: ‘have you never seen someone with an artificial limb before?’”
Christella, 14, has regained her confidence, but in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010, she was embarrassed about the way she thought she looked to others. “My stump was very visible; I couldn’t stand people looking at me. Sometimes, the taptaps (taxis) wouldn’t stop, so I couldn’t go to school.” Thanks to her artificial leg and the regular psychosocial support sessions she has received from Handicap International, Christella has regained her love of life. “I’m going to become a computer expert. No, more than that: I’m going to be an important woman one day”

Many illustrious people here, but the discussion was very bland and I think Turing himself would have turned twice inside his grave... they mostly dismissed the test ("imitation game"), yet it is really a harder task than any other one you could have a computer do...

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said he is sorry for the "appalling" way World War II code breaker Alan Turing was treated for being gay.
A petition on the No 10 website had called for a posthumous government apology to the computer pioneer.
In 1952 Turing was prosecuted for gross indecency after admitting a sexual relationship with a man. Two years later he killed himself.
The campaign was the idea of computer scientist John Graham-Cumming.
He was seeking an apology for the way the mathematician was treated after his conviction. He also wrote to the Queen to ask for Turing to be awarded a posthumous knighthood.
The campaign was backed by Ian McEwan, scientist Richard Dawkins and gay-rights campaigner Peter Tatchell. The petition posted on the Downing Street website attracted thousands of signatures.
Mr Brown, writing in the Telegraph newspaper, said: "While Mr Turing was dealt with under the law of the time and we can't put the clock back, his treatment was of course utterly unfair and I am pleased to have the chance to say how deeply sorry I and we all are for what happened to him."
National legacy
He said Mr Turing deserved recognition for his contribution to humankind.
In the statement he said: "So on behalf of the British government, and all those who live freely thanks to Alan's work I am very proud to say: we're sorry, you deserved so much better."
Organisers of the petition welcomed the move and Mr Turing's three nieces said they were "delighted" and "very glad" to see the injustice recognised.
It's fantastic there has been an apology, says Dr Sue Black of Saving Bletchley Park
Alan Turing was given experimental chemical castration as a "treatment" and his security privileges were removed, meaning he could not continue work for the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).
Alan Turing is most famous for his code-breaking work at Bletchley Park during WWII, helping to create the Bombe that cracked messages enciphered with the German Enigma machines.
However, he also made significant contributions to the emerging fields of artificial intelligence and computing.
In 1936 he established the conceptual and philosophical basis for the rise of computers in a seminal paper called On Computable Numbers, while in 1950 he devised a test to measure the intelligence of a machine. Today it is known as the Turing Test.
After the war he worked at many institutions including the University of Manchester, where he worked on the Manchester Mark 1, one of the first recognisable modern computers.
There is a memorial statue of him in Manchester's Sackville Gardens which was unveiled in 2001.

Kevin Knight a US computer scientist of the University of South Carolina Viterbi School of Engineering, along with an international team have cracked the Copiale Cipher. Knight and his Swedish colleagues Beáta Megyesi and Christiane Schaefer of Uppsala University decoded the secret encrypted 18th century document. The cracking of the 75,000 character cryptogram has revealed the rituals and politics of a German secret society. The document known as the Copiale Cipher, has had its secret meaning shrouded in mystery since discovery at the end of the Cold War, hidden at an East Berlin Academy. The document comprises 105 pages of handwritten messages in abstract symbols and Roman letters. Knight states "I'm happy that linguistic software can help us crack historical ciphers … Now I hope that decipherment techniques can help us build better translation software."

Lawrence "Larry" Page the 37 year old American computer scientist and software developer and co-founder of Google has been appointed the CEO of Google as the existing Eric Schmidt steps down to become executive chairman. Page developed Google along with Sergey Brin from a concept nicknamed ‘Backrub’ being the idea to quantify the number and nature of backlinks (ie citations) that a web page has developed, leading to a PageRank algorithm and the ultimate construction of a search engine far superior to those that existed. Eric Schmidt joined Google as Chairman and CEO as Brin and Page took on joint President roles, an unusual corporate structure but one that appeared to work well for the three. This new shuffle of deck chairs is being hailed as a means of speeding up decision making at the company. Inspired by David Goldman ow.ly/3IVgW image source Wikipedia ow.ly/3IVqs

Ladies rock outer space! Vote to make this a real LEGO set: ideas.lego.com/projects/147876
This vignette of computer scientist Margaret Hamilton is part of "Women of NASA," a project on the LEGO Ideas contest celebrating five pioneering women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. While working at MIT under contract with NASA in the 1960s, Hamilton developed the on-board flight software for the Apollo missions to the moon — celebrated here in a recreation of a famous photo in which Hamilton stands next to this software printed out in book form.
If this project receives 10,000 votes, you could soon buy one at a LEGO store near you!
The full Women of NASA set includes four additional minifigures — of Sally Ride, Mae Jemison, Katherine Johnson, and Nancy Grace Roman — plus vignettes including a microscale Hubble Space Telescope, space shuttle, and instruments of the Apollo era.

Bletchley Park, Bletchley, UK. Alan Turing was a maths genius who's work decrypted German messages from Enigma machines, allowing the British and Allied Forces to have an advantage in World War Two. Without Alan Turing the war outcome could have been very different. Alan Turing was gay and in 1952 was convicted of Gross Incedency and underwent "treatment" to cure his sexuality. Two years later Alan committed sucide. On Christmas Eve 2013 Alan Turing received a pardon from the UK Government from his conviction. It is ironic that Alan's work protected, among many others, the gay community from a brutal regime, yet our own society persecuted a hero of modern times. So sad, so upsettting. Thank heavens society has changed.
