Section through the Mandelbrot-Julia set, defined as the points (z,c) in C^2 where z_{n+1}=z_n^2+c does not diverge for z_0=z. This section corresponds to z_0 = a real number, plotted from above to show that the "equator" z_0=0 is the Mandelbrot set. The color denotes the magnitude of the smallest iterate.

Even in the age of nanotechnology construction is going to take time and supervision. And repair involves both deconstruction and reconstruction of damaged parts - if you can't simply replace something then the repair is going to take some effort.

The figure Photoshopped into this Terragen scene is from a royalty free stock photo. The trees are rendered in low quality as they are distant and shrowded in mist. A rock texture image map is X projected onto the cliff, giving a stratified appearance.

Had a digital image assignment for comp. graphics, and I decided to go out to wixom and see what i could find. for this one i am just experimenting with different techniques, getting kinda bored in comp. graphics considering were still only learning how to use the magic wand tool..

At one point we were thinking about producing a 40mm grenade launcher stock that accepted AR-15 buttstock and grip, and an LMT launcher. It would have been a machined forging.

Recently we saw something similar to this on display at the SHOT Show.

A friend and I had been out shooting around West Hollywood and stopped in at a Norms for desert. While waiting for our booth, I grabbed a few images.

This is a digital abstract I created based off one of the snapshots taken that night.

Note the soft flat face, corresponding to the Julia set c=0.25 which suffers an implosion when c is increased, turning into rays of Fatou dust.

Early in 1984, all I knew of a computer display was the obscure green text on a black background.

But I went to a computer expo here in Santa Cruz, and was riveted to see that the new- Macintosh- computer had a fish on the screen. That was my welcome into the digital world.

Thankyou, Steve and Steve.

The fish image is not a screen shot so it is a little fuzzy. It is a scan of a printout of the fish, made with my ImageWriter printer. The printer was another first.

These are 72 dpi pixels: 72 of them fit into an inch. The highlight in the fish's eye is a twelve pixel rectangle of white. It is rough by today's standards but I found it workable and it was the sky over what had been available.

Screen dots are, usually, still 72 dpi pixels. But, today, those pixels can be millions of shades of grey or millions of colors. In the original Mac, the dots could only be dead black.

If the carp was rendered in modern resolution, it would look real enough to pick up. *

The original, 'stand-up', Mac had 128 K of memory. ( I said K, not Megs or Gigs. )

The Commodore 64 that came before the Mac, had half as much (64 K).

The original computers, that filled several buildings, had maybe 2K of memory.

* - the fact that there can be such better quality, today, when the pixel size is not smaller, is related to the optical principals found in the work of George Seurat, the pointillist painter:

and

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Seurat-La_Parade_detail.jpg

- it's not the dot size, but the fact that the dots can be different tones and colors. so there.

August 29, 2012.

- i should have admitted that- though i am explaining it now- i didn't get it at all when it first started to happen.
