Computer Programmer and UBC CompSci grad Adam seems to be adjusting well to his new digs in the Canadian North.

As seen in front of the compsci building at Leiden University.

This experimental prototype is for investigating the problems of movement and visual navigation on the surface of Mars. It therefore operates in a special sandpit filled with sand which has been carefully devised to mimic the typical sands of mars, and is surrounded by pictorial panels taken from 360 degree Martian horizon scan by NASA. So if it doesn't look up and see the electric lights it looks like Mars :-)

It's a sensor and locomotion actuator development test bed. It's not a self-contained autonomous robot. It's power supplies and computer are remote and sessile, at the end of its umbilical cord.

Another one of those boring, non inspiring days today. The only exciting thing I did today was open up my Captivate to see why my power button stopped working. I was hoping it was only dust or something, but It turns out it's something much worse then that, so I'm using apps to lock/unlock my phone right now T__T. Hopefully getting a new phone in a month or two, so I'll see how that goes.

The reason I own this book, is because not to long ago, I wanted to become a programmer/hacker person. But, that sadly hasn't happened because I don't have the patience to become one. Could never really get into it. Which is a shame, because it is something I want to be able to do, I just can't take reading for hours on end to figure a simple problem that could be a misplaced semicolon.

I took a quick excursion to find the "Fun With Robots" activity elsewhere in the building, after the 1,000,000th visitor came up to our booths and asked us where to find it.

This was early in the day. Later in the day this activity was total madness.

I know it doesn't really compare to a full HEV suit + crowbar, but I still felt like I was honouring my absolute favourite gaming character, and as an easy costume to put together, I was quite happy. I already had the lab coat. I bought the glasses and tag holder, in to which I just put a printed version of this tag: www.etsy.com/listing/78800060/black-mesa-research-facilit... :P I also bought the beard, which I trimmed to try and make it more Gordon's style. I would have grown one, but unfortunately my efforts in the first part of Movember were fairly embarrassing. I think ideally my hair would have been darker [and the beard slightly lighter] and perhaps better shaped. If the beard didn't have the obvious strap, that would also have been nice. Wore for a CompSci social held by my University.

I think I was 14 when I first started connecting wires and batteries to make a light "light up". Thought it was kinda cool Part of the reason I started off as a EE. But the one and zeros kept calling me back to CompSci. Wonder what he will end up pursuing at Harvard in 12 years. Time will only tell.

The power went out on my street. So I finished blogging by the light from a candle. It's awesome to have priorities this straight.

I wrote that Blocking students on school network is wrong.

A bunch of the CCS CS freshmen are taking CS 130A and were discussing red black trees and union find and hijacked Murat's class to talk about them after he gave them design patterns to look up and present next time; also Andrew made an artistic rendition of a red black tree. I only got 2 shots of it before my battery died while I was trying to turn off the flash; later Sunil erased it.
