This macro was an experiment using the CamRanger. The CamRanger, linked to the iPad, enabled us to compose and focus whilst having the camera very close to the ground. Quite pleased with the result.

"In botany, a bract is a modified or specialized leaf. Some bracts are brightly colored and attracting pollinators. Before understanding what a bract is, it is helpful to understand what it is not.

First, it is not a part of the 'flower' by definition.Complete flowers are composed of four parts: sepals, petals, stamens, and pistils. A bract is none of these. Some bracts are brightly colored and serve the function of attracting pollinators."

The park consists of waterfalls which built up themselves on the river Krka thanks to the formation of travertine.

It possesses a fauna and a rich and varied flora.

By crossing the park, browsed by small brooks and small waterfalls pouring in an immense lake, we believe to have found the Heaven on Earth...

Composing

I have a dream, a song to sing

To help me cope with anything

If you see the wonder of a fairy tale

You can take the future even if you fail

I believe in angels

Something good in everything I see

I believe in angels

When I know the time is right for me

I'll cross the stream, I have a dream.

I had a very busy weekend and no time to be online. I don't think I'll be able to catch up with what I missed, but I will visit your latests posts today :)

************************************************************************

The Order of Odonates includes the Dragonflies and the Agrees or Demoiselles.

They are all insects of medium or large size. The largest dragonfly currently measuring 19 cm wingspan, that of his ancestor Paleozoic was 60 cm.

Odonates have large compound eyes and very small antennae.

Their mouthpiece is of the grinder type.

Odonata are both larval and adult predators. The 4 wings are of equal size (Zygoptera) or slightly different (Anisoptera).

The abdomen has 10 conspicuous segments and an 11th reduced.

The larvae are aquatic and can live between 1 and 3 years.

The mating takes place in flight, the male holds the female at the neck by a kind of forceps located at the end of her abdomen, the female then bends her forwards to bring her terminal genital orifice into contact with that of the male located at the 9th segment.

There are 5700 Odonata species in the world and about 120 in Europe.

The Sanguinaires archipelago (Corsican: Ìsuli Sanguinarii) consists of four dark red porphyry islets at the entrance to the Gulf of Ajaccio. They are called Mezu Mare (or Grande Sanguinaire), Cormorants (or Isolotto), Cala d'Alga (30 m) and Porri (31 m high). To this must be added the bare rock U Sbiru located between the island of Porri and the island of the Cormorants, and 13 m high.

In meteorology, a cloud is an aerosol consisting of a visible mass of minute liquid droplets, frozen crystals, or other particles suspended in the atmosphere of a planetary body or similar space. Water or various other chemicals may compose the droplets and crystals. On Earth, clouds are formed as a result of saturation of the air when it is cooled to its dew point, or when it gains sufficient moisture (usually in the form of water vapor) from an adjacent source to raise the dew point to the ambient temperature. They are seen in the Earth's homosphere, which includes the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere. Nephology is the science of clouds, which is undertaken in the cloud physics branch of meteorology. There are two methods of naming clouds in their respective layers of the homosphere, Latin and common. Genus types in the troposphere, the atmospheric layer closest to Earth's surface, have Latin names due to the universal adoption of Luke Howard's nomenclature that was formally proposed in 1802. It became the basis of a modern international system that divides clouds into five physical forms which can be further divided or classified into altitude levels to derive ten basic genera. The main representative cloud types for each of these forms are stratus, cirrus, stratocumulus, cumulus, and cumulonimbus. Low-level clouds do not have any altitude-related prefixes. However mid-level stratiform and stratocumuliform types are given the prefix alto- while high-level variants of these same two forms carry the prefix cirro-. Genus types with sufficient vertical extent to occupy more than one level do not carry any altitude related prefixes. They are classified formally as low- or mid-level depending on the altitude at which each initially forms, and are also more informally characterized as multi-level or vertical. Most of the ten genera derived by this method of classification can be subdivided into species and further subdivided into varieties. Very low stratiform clouds that extend down to the Earth's surface are given the common names fog and mist, but have no Latin names. 64909

The San Francisco Bay Bridge is not as famous as the Golden Gate Bridge, nevertheless it is a very pretty structure.

Today I gave a "composition in the field" class to students of the Digital Photo Academy. We learned about ND (neutral density) filters in broad daylight. For this photo I stacked two ND8 filters, set the ISO to 100 and aperture to f22 to get an exposure time of 4 seconds. This smoothes out the waves nicely. The ND filters also change the colors a bit, e.g. they are not totally neutral. We get these beautiful turquoise tones because of it.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a long exposure RAW image.

Spanish steps (Edited)

Its Italian name is “Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti” and composed of 12 ramps and 135 travertine steps, it is considered the widest and longest staircase of Europe, welcoming millions of tourists and Romans who visit at all times of the day.

The ‘Spanish steps’ in Rome, built in Rococo style between 1723 and 1726, are the steps that lead from the Piazza di Spagna square to the French monastery church Trinita dei Monti (built between 1502–1587). There are 135 steps and three different terraces, referring to the Holy Trinity (the Trinità). The top of the stairs near the Egyptian obelisk offers a beautiful view, albeit one shared with throngs of other tourists. The name can be a bit confusing, as the construction of the steps was actually commissioned by the French (Louis XII). In the 17th century, the Spanish embassy was located on the square – ‘Piazza di Spagna’ – at the base of the stairs, hence the name ‘Spanish Steps’. The official name is therefore not Spanish steps, but Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti.

Not knowing when the next wave is going to hit you, perhaps is your best chance to stay positive. The only way to survive is battling back even if you are feeling down.

Shooting with a GoPro Hero is a totally strange experience for me. Being an optical view finder guy, I have never gotten used to compose a shot with electronic view finders on my mobile phone, or even my Powershot S100. Now, imagine shooting in front of your subjects without using your hand, and instead, strapping and composing the camera with your head. You only get to see the results after pulling still frames out of a long video recording. This is weird and totally out of my comfort zone, but at the same time I feel this as another challenge to get something unique and fun.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres. The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. It supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981. The Great Barrier Reef has long been known to and used by the Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and is an important part of local groups' cultures and spirituality. The reef is a very popular destination for tourists, especially in the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns regions. Tourism is an important economic activity for the region, generating over A$3 billion per year. 22837

Every 2 years the Grand-Place (central square) in Brussels is covered with a flower carpet of begonias during 3 or 4 days. The carpet of 77 m x 24 m is composed by about 120 volunteers, with nearly one million begonias.

This year, in 2016 the event was from Friday 12 to Monday 15 August 2016 at the Grand-Place (Grote Markt) in Brussels.

(Athough they said it is made of Belgian Begonias, I noticed a lot of Dahlia's !)

The theme this year (2016) was Japan, and you can see the Japanese flag in the design, Koi carps, Bonsai , Bamboo and the crane bird.

This exposure is one I composed and edited last year, however I came back to this fall pond side shot with a new understanding of editing. The original shot is a focus stack, this one is not. This photo captured my attention, the tree leading out to the pond, rough, rugged, a bit chaotic in its nature, leading to the reflected side of the pond, orderly subdued. In the original shot it looks like I used a soft grad filter in the scene to expose everything, and now looking back I see this was a drastic mistake. Unfortunately there’s not a lot you can do about using physical filters and the destructive effects they can have on a scene. I cropped the scene lower than usual and tried to put more focus into the rest of the scene.

Pedra da Gávea is a monolithic mountain in Tijuca Forest, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Composed of granite and gneiss, its elevation is 844 metres (2,769 ft), making it one of the highest mountains in the world that ends directly in the ocean. Trails on the mountain were opened up by the local farming population in the early 1800s; today, the site is under the administration of the Tijuca National Park.

The mountain's name translates as Rock of the Topsail, and was given to it during the expedition of Captain Gaspar de Lemos, begun in 1501, and in which the Rio de Janeiro bay (today Guanabara Bay, but after which the city was named) also received its name. The mountain, one of the first in Brazil to be named in Portuguese, was named by the expedition's sailors, who compared its silhouette to that of the shape of a topsail of a carrack upon sighting it on January 1, 1502. That name in turn came to be given to the Gávea area of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Differential weathering on one side of the rock has created what is described as a stylized human face. Markings on another face of the rock have been described as an inscription. Geologists and scientists are nearly in agreement that the "inscription" is the result of erosion and that the "face" is a product of pareidolia. Furthermore, the consensus of archaeologists and scholars in Brazil is that the mountain should not be viewed as an archaeological site.
