Miscellaneous area.—A special kind of map unit component that does not meet the definition of soil as given in Soil Taxonomy. These areas are incapable of supporting vegetation without major reclamation efforts. Examples include Rock outcrop, Oil-waste land, and Urban land. The NCSS maintains a list of miscellaneous land types that can be correlated as map unit components in the National Soil Survey Handbook. See component.
Figure 71.—Examples of miscellaneous areas used as map unit components:
1. Badland—Moderately steep to very steep barren land dissected by many intermittent drainage channels in soft geologic material. Ordinarily, it is not stony and occurs in semiarid and arid areas. (Mapped in an area of Badland-Orella complex, 6 to 40 percent slopes).
2. Dune land—Unstable sand in ridges and intervening troughs that shifts with the wind. (Mapped in an area of 100 percent dune land.)
3. Glaciers—Large masses of ice formed by the compaction and recrystallization of snow. The ice front may be advancing or retreating. Areas may include incidental amounts of soil or rock. (Mapped in an area of Glaciers and 5 percent Rock outcrop).
4. Lava flows—Areas covered with lava. Most flows have sharp, jagged surfaces, crevices, and angular blocks characteristic of lava. Others are relatively smooth and have a ropy, glazed surface. A small amount of earthy material may occur in a few cracks and sheltered pockets.(Mapped in an area of 100 percent lava flows.)
5. River wash—Unstabilized sandy, silty, clayey, or gravelly sediment that is flooded, washed, and reworked frequently by rivers. (Mapped as a skeletal or fragmental soil in the UAE.)
6. Rock outcrop—Exposures of bare bedrock other than lava flows and rock-lined pits. If needed, map units can be named according to the kind of rock, e.g., “Rock outcrop, chalk,” “Rock outcrop, limestone,” and “Rock outcrop, gypsum.” If small, they can be identified by spot symbols on maps. (Mapped in an area of Moenkopie-Rock outcrop complex.)
7. Rubbleland—Areas of cobbles, stones, and boulders commonly at the base of mountains or left on mountainsides by glaciation or periglacial processes. (A map unit inclusion in an area mapped as Mido-Strych-Reef complex, 2 to 50 percent slopes).
8. Urban land—Land mostly covered by streets, parking lots, buildings, and other structures of urban areas. (Mapped in an area of Urban land, Asheville, NC.)
