Due to bad construction planning, I dug from the top down rather than from the outside (door) in - so filling in the roof was going to be extra tough. The whole thing was fairly deep, perhaps 5' x 12'. (See photo #2 for context).

The Maryland Freestate ChalleNGe Academy graduates nearly 90 cadets from class #42 on June 14, 2014, at Aberdeen Proving Ground. The cadets successfully completed more than 5 months of rigorous residential instruction. Cadets were recognized with awards and scholarships this week in a separate ceremony. The National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program, a preventive rather than remedial "youth at risk" program, is directed at unemployed, drug-free, high school dropouts, 16-18 years of age. Core components of the program are citizenship, academic excellence (GED/High School diploma), life-coping skills, service to community, health and hygiene, job skills training, leadership, and physical training. This is an oldie, from back in March. My photographic habit is quickly being superseded by the ol' knitting sticks as the seasons turn. The temperature starts to drop (frost on my windshield this morning! I say!), and whaddya know - it's that time of year again. In positive news, I finished knitting the forsaken bobble toque tonight that I started back in January. You see? I can follow some things through to completion!

The Obama administration has set an aggressive goal for the United States to retake global leadership in postsecondary degree attainment by 2020. The president's goals will require the highly decentralized system of 4,600 colleges and universities to increase productivity dramatically. Productivity, as measured by the number of degrees produced, can be improved by ensuring that students who transfer, an increasingly common phenomenon, retain as much college credit as possible as well as better aligning postsecondary policy with key cross-state metropolitan areas that drive regional and national economic growth.
The concentration of population and economic resources in metropolitan regions makes them engines of America's competitiveness, but many metros cross state boundaries, creating inefficiencies in terms of increased tuition costs, difficulty of transfer and even duplication of fixed costs as states compete for higher education supremacy. Policies that help ease the college-going of metro residents can also help reduce the costs and increase effectiveness of postsecondary education.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie and the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) celebrated the substantial completion of the H-1 Freeway Rehabilitation Project at a dedication ceremony at Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, overlooking the freeway. The project reconstructed and resurfaced one of the most heavily traveled corridors in the state and added an extra travel lane in both directions in less than 11 months. New LED street lighting, added drainage, and glare screens were also installed to improve highway safety.

As the Old Donation School nears its completion, it is receiving great reviews. It will be home to students in grades second through eighth who are gifted intellectually, in visual arts or dance. It has a capacity of 1,375.
The school, which will open about four months ahead of schedule, has features common in 21st century education, such as small-group learning spaces and seats that easily slide around, flexible walls, and using hallways as educational spaces. It also has an 800-seat theater and an outdoor stage.

My husband and our new little boy. Our 4th baby together (my 5th), completing our family.
Completion tastes nice
like bagoong rice!
(now where did that come from?!)
i started this project last weekend.
began with my trusty HB #4, sketching what i can while the kids barked a stream of orders: ~
"more yellow paint mommy. more paint for my sunflowers!"
"i need another brush. she's not sharing the brushes, mom, mommmmmm!!"
"i need another paper...can you get me more paper please..."
it was divine chaos with my little divine devils busy like bees on their masterpieces.
i squirted more paint, cleaned brushes, filled and refilled bowls and run back and forth like the most efficient server at Swiss Chalet and then i yelled:
Enough!!! (whilst taking off S.C. server's uniform and apron ;p)
all the while wondering when i'd get to my poppies...
which i did - four days later.
done!
now for some bagoong rice with chilis, coconut shrimps and thai iced tea...mmm...mmmmmM!
gotta find myself a good thai resto in these parts...i miss People's Park in greenbelt! sarap 'dun! (are they still open?)

Hailed as a great feat of civil engineering at the time of its completion in 1907, the Silver Lake Reservoir Complex was built on land that the city of Los Angeles began acquiring through eminent domain in the 1880's. Chief Engineer William Mulholland utilized an innovative design (later adapted for use in building the Panama Canal) known as 'sluicing', utilizing hydraulic pumps to remove material from the lake's bottom, which was recycled to form the dam. At the time of their completion, the two reservoirs were the only drinking water storage facility west of the San Andreas Fault designed for emergency use in the event of a failure in the aqueduct system. Mulholland stocked the reservoir with Black Bass to 'keep minnows from clogging the pipes or swimming through the system into the bath. He personally chose the day each year to declare open fishing season', according to the Silver Lake Reservoirs Conservancy website, www.silverlakereservoirs.org. By 1912, the complex had been landscaped with thousands of trees by the Los Angeles Parks Commission and was a great source of civic pride.
The 127-acre site is named for Herman Silver (and not in reference to its shimmering waters), a member of Los Angeles' first Board of Water Commissioners. It is currently operated by the L.A. Department of Water & Power, with 96 acres of open water and paved roads, and 23 acres of open space, 'home' to native Angelino fauna such as coyotes, racoons, skunks and birds, including the Great Blue Heron.
In 1989, the reservoir complex was designated an Historic-Cultural Monument by the City of Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission (No. 422), a designation which allows for significant public scrutiny in the event of proposed changes to the site. This photo was taken from the upstairs window of the historic John R. Hunt House located at 2055 West Silver Lake Drive.

Pirate-y Wallaby is in the home stretch. About 7 more inches worth of stockinette to go on that hood, then kitchener it up and I'm good! Well.. almost good. The bottom, as you can see, decided to have an "overachiever" kind of roll, so I'm debating whether I want to do an applied I-cord to tame it down, or just pick up and knit a ribbing band after all. Guess I'll see just how crazy it is after blocking.
