One of my first Common Darters for this year, basking by one of the local lakes on Wednesday morning last week. Couldn't resist the chance to line it up with the purple flower behind. They haven't been out long so far this season but as usual they are already rapidly popping up in a lot of places along with the Ruddy Darter.

Common fruit fly or vinegar fly have brick red eyes, are yellow-brown in color, and have transverse black rings across their abdomen. They exhibit sexual dimorphism: females are about 2.5 millimeters (0.098 in) long; males are slightly smaller and the back of their bodies is darker. Males are easily distinguished from females based on color differences.

Male Common Flameback @ Japanese Garden
The Common Flameback Woodpecker (Dinopium Javanese) is a common bird in Singapore. It is a strikingly colorful bird and has a crest of either red or black, depending on the sex. The female has a black crest, and the male has a red crest.
It is found in open coastal woodlands, mangroves and mature gardens. Its shrill calls and rapid tappings on tree-trunks are indicative of its presence.
Woodpeckers are primarily insectivorous, feeding mainly on insects and their larvae, as well as other arthropods. Many have also been observed to feed on plant products including tree sap.

Common gallinule, aka common moor hen, reside in Port Aransas, Texas year round. This family was seen at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center. The babies look like something out of a sci-fi film.

Page Springs, AZ - I was happy to find the Common Black-Hawks again this year, this time with youngsters staring down from the nest which was directly over a path along the creek. One of the parents was keeping watch nearby.
