Begijnhof's (Béguinages in French) are found throughout the Low Countries. Their residents, beguines, were single, often widowed, women who lived in houses surrounding a sequestered courtyard. The begijnhof had close ties with the Church and were committed to charitable works. Beguines were required to take a vow of chastity and attend daily mass, but unlike the situation of a convent, the women were allowed to leave at any time and generally enjoyed more freedom than nuns.

The fabled city of Amsterdam- one of those cities that is known worldwide by its name alone. It’s the mother city- mother of modern capitalism, mother of tolerance, mother of the modern republic, and for a New Yorker, still fondly remembered as the mother city of NYC. The city was also a very brief stopover of the Pilgrims that eventually made their way to Massachusetts.
For all these things, it seems a proud city- full of life, confidence, and openness - a rare place of “live and let live”- a comfortably casual yet refined town, not without its downsides of course, but somehow a very positive place…
It’s a visually beautiful place as well- canals and water everywhere, the staid houses of the 17th century well-to-do, its parks and churches and gardens.
Amsterdam had one of the greatest runs in history. It’s a relatively new city- settled around the 1200’s, when the Amstel River was dammed. (The place of “The Dam” still exists). It remained relatively obscure for a few centuries, and so, was never a center of Medieval culture, and thus, never firmly established the feudal institutions and extreme religion of that age.
The city didn’t rise to prominence until after 1588, when the Dutch Republic drove out the Spanish Empire during the Eighty Years War. As the first modern Republic, it was not bound by a totalitarian religious and political regime. Its policy of relative religious freedom drew in Europe’s misfits- Huguenots, Jews, and traders and artists driven out of the cities of Southern Netherlands (modern Belgium), especially from the formerly prosperous Antwerp.
Its policy of free trade inspired the city to become an economic powerhouse- the first major mercantile city of the Modern era. It spread its influence far and wide, establishing bases and colonies in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. At its height, it was the most prosperous city on Earth. The magnitude of the city’s wealth at this time can still be seen along the canal rings, where the houses of the merchant class still stand proudly. Its stock market, founded in 1602, is the oldest continually operating exchange in the world. It was also an intellectual and artistic center of Europe, the home of painters such as Rembrandt, and philosophers such as Spinoza.
In 1609, the Dutch West India Company, one of two major arms of Dutch trade, hired the English explorer, Henry Hudson, to find a northerly route to Asia. Instead, he found the American river that still bears his name. In 1624, on an island where that river meets the sea, a colony was established called New Amsterdam, which eventually became a city that had its own unprecedented run in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Though the Dutch only held New Amsterdam for a few decades, the similarities between the mother and its child are striking. Historical Amsterdam is huddled around a ring of canals and has a bustling, congested feel, full of pedestrians, trams, cars, and bicycles darting here and there. In its heyday, the city was the preeminent commercial city of the world, much as New York was in its prime. Amsterdam drew the misfits of the world under a spirit of openness, much like NYC has done. As an artistic and intellectual center, it is home to world-class museums and orchestras, as well as ambitious and successful artists. The two cities also draw a constellation of tourists, some decidedly obnoxious.
There are plenty of differences. For instance, we learned very quickly (and hungrily), that Amsterdam is a city that sleeps- after midnight, the town goes quiet. And despite the congestion, it is not a frenetically driven city. People take more time.
No matter all these things, it is wonderfully unique city. Charming, beautiful, refined, seedy, free-spirited- a place of many dimensions.
Humble, committed, and passionate about the art. It shows in his style, and certainly comes through in his sound.
you can read into it whichever way you wish

The International Crimes Tribunal (Bangladesh) (ICT of Bangladesh) is a domestic war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh set up in 2009 to investigate and prosecute suspects for the genocide committed in 1971 by the Pakistan Army and their local collaborators, Razakars, Al-Badr and Al-Shams during the Bangladesh Liberation War. During the 2008 general election, the Awami League (AL) pledged to try war criminals. The government set up the tribunal after the Awami League won the general election in December 2008 with a more than two-thirds majority in parliament.
The War Crimes Fact Finding Committee, tasked to investigate and find evidence, completed its report in 2008, identifying 1,600 suspects. Prior to the formation of the ICT, the United Nations Development Programme offered assistance in 2009 on the tribunal's formation. In 2009, the parliament amended the 1973 act that authorised such a tribunal to update it. The first indictments were issued in 2010. However, the main perpetrators of the war crimes, the Pakistan soldiers, remained out of the reach of the courts.
By 2012, nine leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, the largest Islamist party in the nation, and two of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, had been indicted as suspects in war crimes. Three leaders of Jamaat were the first tried; each were convicted of several charges of war crimes. The first person convicted was Abul Kalam Azad, tried in absentia as he had left the country; he was sentenced to death in January 2013.
The ICT initially received some offers of international assistance. In 2009, the UN offered its expertise, expressing an interest in helping Bangladesh avoid the problems other countries faced in similar trials. The EU has passed three resolutions supporting the trials and Jean Lambert has said "she expected that the trial would conform to the highest standard possible."
However, since the beginning of the trials several human rights organisations and international legal figures have raised objections to the court proceedings. Human Rights Watch, which initially supported the establishment of the tribunal, have criticised it for issues of fairness and transparency, as well as reported harassment of lawyers and witnesses representing the accused. Bianca Karim and Tirza Theunissen have written that the international community have voiced concerns that the trial will not be transparent or impartial.
Jamaat-e-Islami supporters and their student wing, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, called a general strike nationwide on 4 December 2012, which erupted in violence. The group demanded the tribunal be scrapped permanently and their leaders be released immediately.
Annual public opinion polls regularly rank the war-crimes trials ranked among the top three "positive steps that the government has taken", though the issue is not considered among the top ten most pressing issues facing the country. Polling in 2013 by AC Nielsen found that more than two-thirds of Bangladeshis characterise the ICT as "unfair" or "very unfair", though 86% support its implementation.
In February 2013, Abdul Quader Molla, Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat, was the first person sentenced to death by the ICT who was not convicted in absentia.Initially, Molla was sentenced to life imprisonment, but demonstrations, including the 2013 Shahbag protests in Dhaka, lead to a new punishment.

Rik Poot (1924 Vilvoorde - 2006 Jette ) is a strongly socially committed Flemish artist. In the initial period, his work was more abstract. Later on, he used a more figurative art form, within classical modernism. Essential to Rik Poot's formal language are the hollow spaces between the bronze parts from which his sculptures are constructed. By creating these openings, his monumental sculptures simultaneously acquire something light and a certain fragility. This gives his works a powerful and expressive rhythm. He was a great advocate of craftsmanship. He stated: "Without craftsmanship you cannot make art. An artist is a craftsman."

French singer and composer Pierre Perret (1934) is a legend of French chanson. His repertoire ranges from children's songs to comic, erotic and politically committed songs full of humour and tenderness. He is recognised as an outstanding poet and he also appeared in French films
Pierre Perret was born Pierre Max in 1934 in Castelsarrasin, Tarn-et-Garonne. His parents, Maurice and Claudia, ran the Café du Pont in Castelsarrasin, where he spent much of his childhood. Here he learned to use jargon and slang. As a child, he appeared in two films, the crime drama Dernier atout/The Trump Card (Jacques Becker, 1942) starring Mireille Balion and Raymond Rouleau, and the drama Le carrefour des enfants perdus/Children of Chaos (Léo Joannon, 1944) starring René Dary. At 14, he signed with the Conservatoire de Musique de Toulouse and the Toulouse Conservatoire of Dramatic Art. At 19 he won first prize for saxophone. From 1953 to 1956, he did his military service and was unable to take the final entrance exam to the Paris Conservatoire, in Marcel Mule's class, as he was in military prison that day. He set up his first music group and performed at balls, family gatherings and other regional events. In 1957, he was signed by producer Eddie Barclay and met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim at Barclay's studio. His first single, 'Moi j'attends Adèle', was released that year. A recording at the Olympia for the radio programme Musicorama helped to put him on the map. In 1958, Perret toured Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as the opening act for the American group The Platters. He also played a small role in Les étoiles de midi/Stars at Noon (Jacques Ertaud, Marcel Ichac, 1958). In November of that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off recuperating in a sanatorium.
In 1960 Pierre Perret released 'Le Bonheur conjugal', but it was not a big enough success and Barclay did not renew his contract. He married Simone Mazaltarim, renamed Rebecca, in 1962, Their daughter Julie was born in 1963. He moved to Gennevilliers with his family, where he stayed for eight years. Perret signed a six-year contract with Vogue and found a new impresario in Lucien Morisse. His first big hit came in 1964 with 'Le Tord-boyaux', which sold 75,000 copies. In 1966, the song 'Les Jolies Colonies de vacances' was a big hit, selling 200,000 copies. Perret enjoyed a string of successes and gave several concerts, opening for artists as diverse as Johnny Hallyday, Nana Mouskouri and the Rolling Stones on their first concert in France. In 1969, he left Vogue and decided with his wife to self-produce by founding Editions Adèle (named after his first song). In the same year, he returned to the cinema. He played the title character in Claude Autant-Lara's comedy-drama Les Patates/Potatoes with Rufus, for which he also wrote the music. The next year, he acted in the failure Un été sauvage/A Savage Summer (Marcel Camus, 1970) with Nino Ferrer and Katina Paxinou. In 1971 he played Judge Roy Bean in the Western parody Le Juge/Judge Roy Bean (Jean Girault, Federico Chentrens, 1971) with Silvia Monti and Robert Hossein. 1971 saw the release of 'La Cage aux oiseaux', which sold 300,000 copies. From 1974 onwards, Pierre Perret's records were arranged by Bernard Gérard, replacing Jean Claudric who had been orchestrating the singer since he joined Vogue. In 1975, he had his biggest hit with 'Le Zizi', which sold over 600,000 copies
Pierre Perret is a master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang. He even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables. His songs are often cheeky, such as 'Le zizi' (The Willy). He asks pertinent questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, with a malicious smile, but always with humanism and candour. He also has written politically committed songs like 'La bête est revenue', 'La petite kurde', and 'Vert de Colère'. His song 'Lily' became a classic anti-racist song and won him the LICRA prize in 1978. Other politically committed songs followed, on abortion ('Elle attend son petit' in 1981), famine, excision and more generally the condition of women in Africa ('Riz pilé' in 1989), war ('La Petite Kurde' in 1992), ecology ('Vert de colère' in 1998) and the rise of fascism ('La Bête est revenue'). Released in 1998, this song against the Front National earned him many insulting letters. In 1995, Perret recorded a duet with Sophie Darel, 'Maître Pierre' for the album 'C'était les Années Bleues'. He participated in the committee for the simplification of the administrative language (COSLA). In 2020, Pierre Perret embarked on a major tour entitled 'Mes adieux provisoires', which was disrupted by the Covid pandemic, declaring that it would ‘surely’ be his last tour. In 2023, he released a new album, 'Ma vieille carcasse', accompanied by the video 'Paris saccagé', criticising the policies of the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. Alongside his singing activities, Pierre Perret has published several biographical works since his first book 'Adieu Monsieur Léautaud' (1972) was published. In 2009, Manuel Poirier made a film about Pierre Perret's childhood, based on his autobiography, 'Le Café du point'. Perret himself could be seen in a bit role in the film Sous les étoiles de Paris/Under the Stars of Paris (Claud Drexel, 2020) starring Catherine Frot. He also wrote about another passion, gastronomy. Pierre Perret is married to Simone Mazaltarim. They have three children but their daughter Julie died in 1995. The couple lives in Nangis, France.

Trump administration ends Biden-era task force aimed at seizing Russian oligarchs’ assets
Feb 7, 2025 9:48 AM EST
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration's Justice Department has disbanded a Biden-era program aimed at seizing the assets of Russian oligarchs as a means to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
The move to disband Task Force KleptoCapture is one of several moves undertaken by the Justice Department under the new leadership of Attorney General Pam Bondi that presage a different approach toward Russia and national security issues.
The department also ended the Foreign Influence Task Force, which was established in the first Trump administration to police influence campaigns staged by Russia and other nations aimed at sowing discord, undermining democracy and spreading disinformation. The U.S. government in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election aggressively moved to disrupt propaganda campaigns by Russia, which officials have assessed had a preference for Trump.
In a memo addressed to all employees Wednesday — the first day of Bondi's tenure — the attorney general's office stated that "attorneys assigned to those initiatives shall return to their prior posts, and resources currently devoted to those efforts shall be committed to the total elimination of Cartels and TCOs" — an acronym for Transnational Criminal Organizations.
The Trump administration has made combating the illicit flow of fentanyl into the U.S. a priority. The opioid is blamed for some 70,000 overdose deaths annually.
The Justice Department on Wednesday also shifted its approach to enforcement of a World War II-era law known as the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which requires people to disclose to the government when they lobby in the U.S. on behalf of foreign governments — including Russia — or political entities. Under the policy change, prosecutors were directed to focus criminal enforcement on acts of more traditional espionage rather than registration violations.
Despite the disbanding of the task force, Trump administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, have called for a more aggressive stance on Russia. During his confirmation hearing, Bessent advocated for stronger sanctions on Russian oil, saying the Biden administration's sanctions regime wasn't "muscular" enough.
"I believe the previous administration was worried about raising U.S. energy prices during an election season," he said.
Trump has said he will bring about a rapid end to the war in Ukraine and said talks are ongoing to bring the conflict to a close. "We made a lot of progress on Russia, Ukraine," Trump said earlier this week. "We'll see what happens. We're going to stop that ridiculous war."
The lettering may say "Committed to Safety" and I suppose that's true, but its result was slapping a bunch of 25-MPH slow orders on the IC&E Chicago Sub, especially on the west end, on 6-25-13 as part of the track evaluation train.
The U-505 has an dramatic history... The Captain committed suicide during a patrol, and at a later patrol the ship was captured by US, the first enemy ship captured by US navy since the War of 1812. Today the U-505 becomes an exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, IL

Tenth patrol – Zschech's (Captain) suicide
After ten months in Lorient, U-505 departed for her tenth Atlantic patrol, seeking to break her run of bad luck and bad morale. On 24 October 1943, not long after transiting the Bay of Biscay, U-505 was spotted by British destroyers east of the Azores and was forced to submerge and endure a severe and lengthy depth charge attack.
In a testament to both the intensity of the attack and his own instability, Zschech snapped under the strain and committed suicide in the submarine's control room, shooting himself in the head in front of his crew. The first watch officer, Paul Meyer, quickly took command, rode out the rest of the attack and returned the boat to port with minimal damage. Despite his quick thinking, Meyer was not rewarded, merely "absolved from all blame" by the Kriegsmarine for the embarrassing incident. Zschech is recorded as the first submariner in history to commit suicide underwater in response to the stress of a prolonged depth charging, and the first (and thus far only) officer to commit suicide while commanding a warship in battle.a Experts[who?] have speculated bad morale and poor command influence demonstrated (and encouraged) by this series of humiliating failures might help explain the crew's later failure to scuttle U-505 properly before abandoning her, although this is disputed by some crew members.
Museum ship
U-505 had been sitting neglected at the Portsmouth Navy Yard for nearly ten years; just about every removable part had been stripped from her interior. She was in no condition to serve as an exhibit.
Admiral Gallery proposed a possible solution. At his suggestion, Lohr contacted the German manufacturers who had supplied U-505's original components and parts, asking for replacements. As the Admiral reported in his autobiography, Eight Bells and All's Well, to his and the museum's surprise, every company supplied the requested parts without charge. Most included letters that said in effect, "We are sorry that you have our U-boat, but since she's going to be there for many years, we want her to be a credit to German technology.
I decided to go the risky route, and pour plaster into the plaster mold. Except I think I skipped a step, and will probably have a hard time separating sculpture from mold. I may not even be able to at all, but too late.. I'm committed.
I did use a specialty plaster that's supposed to be "5X stronger than ordinary plaster", so I'm hoping if I can make myself wait till it's FULLY cured, the old plaster of Paris will break away, leaving whatever is inside more or less complete.
I just decided that a plastic casting wasn't going to be what I wanted anyway, and in a fit of impatience, mixed and poured before indecision caught up with me again..

July 28, 2013. Somerset, MA.
Hundreds of protesters rallied near Brayton Point Power Plant and called upon Governor Deval Patrick to close the electricity-generating power plant in Somerset. 44 of the participants committed non-violent civil disobedience and were arrested for trespassing on the plant’s grounds. The plant is one of the largest electricity generating plants in New England, using a combination of low-sulfur coal, natural gas, or oil and diesel fuel to generate 1,528 megawatts of electricity. Demonstrators asserted that in 2010, the plant emitted 6 million of tons of carbon dioxide, making it one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases in all of New England and that annually the plant emits 15,000 pounds of mercury, arsenic, lead, and other hazardous air pollutants into the air. Participants called on Governor Patrick to shut down the plant as soon as possible, while guaranteeing the plant workers and community a just transition.

Hey {{ first_name or 'there' }},
Let's talk HABITS!
EVERY result comes down to the habits you’re committed to keeping on a daily basis – the good and the bad.
I’ve felt the effects of BOTH sides, as I’m sure you have, too.
There have been times when I skipped my workouts (for longer than I’d like to admit).
And times when I ate dessert after dinner… every night.
And didn’t drink enough water … and didn’t get enough sleep … and you know the drill.
Not only do you feel like crap, but your productivity, motivation, and focus suffer BIG time.
Our habits have a powerful impact on our productivity and success …
… not to mention everything else in our lives.
I wanted to share some of my PERSONAL habits that I’ve built over the years. For me, being consistent with my personal habits – no matter how busy I am – is what allows me to 10X everything else.
Here’s what’s working for me RIGHT NOW:
Meditation at least 10 mins a day (first thing in the morning - it gets my day off to the right start)
Working out 5x per week – no matter what. I work out in the mornings before breakfast, 20 or 30 minutes, following free videos on YouTube. I mix it up with weights, cardio, yoga and Pilates.
Drinking a lot of water (filling my water bottle at least 3 times a day)
Doing something for personal growth EVERY day
Getting outside in nature. I love foraging for nutrient-dense wild foods as it helps me slow down and connect.
Capping coffee at 2 cups a day (currently on an oat milk flat white kick)
Walking with my dog Millie every day (so we can get our Vitamin D and sunshine!)
Bed by 10:30 pretty much every night
You know what’s funny?
I had to actually “think” about what my habits were since they have become so automatic.
And that’s the goal, right?
I know what it’s like to be so consumed with work that you “don’t have the time” to work out or get back on track with your habits.
But… it’s ALL about making it a priority.
→ You already know what you need to do if you’re not already doing it.
I've got a resource that might help you - my FREE Habit Trackers - which you can download here. These trackers might be the motivation you need to stay on track.
What’s one personal habit you’re going to commit to getting back to?
Email me back and let me know for accountability!
Make it an amazing day,
Chloe x
