“Wherever they come from, there are people who care and want to make a difference,” said Don Keister at atTAcK addiction’s Be a Hero Gala on Oct. 15 at the Executive Banquet Center in Newark. Don Keister founded atTAcK addiction with his wife, Jeanne, in February 2013 after they lost their son to an accidental overdose in December 2012. “The who,” Keister told the more than 160 attendees, “is atTAcK addiction.”

At the gala, atTAcK addiction honored people from the community for their contributions in fighting addiction through prevention, education, awareness and policy change. Secretary Landgraf received the group’s highest honor, the Medal of Honor, “for going above and beyond the call of duty in the war against substance use disorder.”

Also honored were:

Liz and Marty Perkins, Blue Heart Award, “for the sacrifice in the war against substance abuse and the drive to continue to change the future.”

Bob Procopio and Munchie Morgan, Distinguished Service Award, “for their significant contribution toward the mission for atTAcK addiction.”

Bart Baylson, Medal of Valor, “for their strength to maintain sobriety while working to help others.”

New Castle County Police Chief Col. Elmer Setting and Ocean View Police Chief Kenneth McLaughlin, Courage Award, “for demonstrating outstanding courage in leading others in the war against substance use disorder.”

Caravel Academy and Jill Fredel, Director of Communications at DHSS, Unsung Hero Award, “for selfless commitment and contributions to atTAcK addiction.”

Marie Allen, Heroin Alert, Persistence Award, “for tireless dedication to driving awareness and change toward substance use disorder.”

TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Col. Steven Bleymaier, 72nd Air Base Wing and Tinker installation commander, outlines the base’s continuing aggressive efforts to reduce energy consumption and save taxpayer dollars. Positioned outside a base steam plant, Bldg. 5802, the commander spoke before joining local, command and contractor partners to cut a ceremonial ribbon signifying the private-public unified energy-reduction goal. I stumbled across this beautiful, one of a kind craftsman home perched atop a river bank in the Midwest. It is a stunning representation of style, personalization and commitment to crafting a unique home. Front to back, top to bottom, this home has style and flair that is rarely seen today. Someone took a lot of time to think through and construct each room individually. From ornate mouldings, escutcheons, corbels, and trim work to mosaic tiles in multiple colors and designs, from patterns like herringbone to geometric shapes. There isn’t six square inches of this home that wasn’t individualized in some manner. Even secret staircases to odd attic spaces were thoughtful. Even what most builders would have simply walled over and considered a void was put to use somehow in this home from small shelves to inset cabinets to cubbies – all trimmed out. Even the windowsills were tiled. With 2 kitchens, multiple living areas spanning 3 floors, including an interior garage, this home is also a feat of engineering sitting on this slope to the river below. Due to decades of deterioration, some of the homes bones are showing – steel beams and concrete. I suppose that is why this home is not sitting at the bottom of the river by now. It may be forlorn, and surely has seen better days, but it is holding fast to it’s mooring. A beautiful find while out exploring the urban landscapes.

there are three stone benches, each with one of these inspiring virtues carved into the front. i let alice pick which one to sit on, and she chose courage, which is sort of silly... considering just a few minutes after this she totally freaked out when she caught sight of the bronze statue of vice admiral james bond stockdale. granted, it was about 12 feet tall and quite looming, but still... courage? i'm not so sure. silly alice girl.

I had seen this shot done online a few times and I thought I'd give it a shot. It was a bit tricky to get the shadow perfect. I used the led light on my phone and just turned it on, but I had to move it around a lot to get the heart right. I love how this one came out though. Enjoy!
