If commitment and passion for local foods were a recipe, Nutrition Director Chad Elliott and the Decorah Community School District would have all the right ingredients.
Elliott and his staff are especially excited about their culinary plans for district diners to celebrate Iowa Local Food Day. But then every day in this school district is local food day and that is what makes them extraordinary.
And it doesn’t get any more local than out the back door 10 feet from the district’s central kitchen. Decorah High School’s gardens produce nearly enough kale for the district for the entire year thanks to the dedication of staff who lead student garden crews and the implementation of a greenhouse on a track that rolls over the raised kale beds extending the growing season.
Students of all ages are involved in a variety of steps in growing and preparing local food for the district. The garden produced 100 pounds of garlic that students helped peel, process, and put in four-ounce containers to freeze for use in recipes throughout the year. The same was done with fresh basil.
For Local Food Day 2022, Decorah is featuring local meat donated by a nearby beef operation, burgers from a local food hub, local wheat for breakfast pizza, local roasted potatoes, local pears and local caramel apples.
Elliott said a key ingredient for success with local foods is to start on a small scale. He first established a relationship with a local orchard and then tried to add a new local food to the menus each year.
“It’s a no brainer for us every day,” Elliott said. “The price is right and we adjust the workload and try to balance it. We have a plan for every day depending on what preparation is required for a particular menu. It is just one more way to do good for our community. We want to support our local farmers. We like doing local food day because it is a chance for us to announce and publicize our local food commitment.”
The White Coat Ceremony is a symbol of the Nursing students' commitment to the journey of becoming a nurse and the significance of the contributions nurses have made, and will continue to make, to medicine and humanity.

The Hepatitis B Foundation sponsored First Friday Doylestown on May 2 in support of National Hepatitis Awareness Month for a third consecutive year.
The Foundation’s continued commitment to sponsoring First Friday Doylestown is to raise awareness among local community leaders, educators, business owners and residents that one in 20 Americans has been affected by hepatitis B. That means, “Someone you know and love has been touched by the deadly virus,” according to Peggy Farley, Community Relations Manager for the Foundation.
During the evening, Hepatitis B Foundation staff and volunteers were on hand to speak to members of the public about their work. The Foundation’s tent featured Michelle Grossman NBC 10 EarthWatch Meteorologist; local singer/songwriters Christy Jefferson & Band and The Waltons; O’Liver, the Hepatitis B Foundation’s mascot; a display of Cold Spring Elementary School students’ artwork; hepatitis B literature for adults and youth and much more. The event ran from 6 pm to 9:30 pm and was FREE.
For the Foundation, First Friday Doylestown is an evening to celebrate the arts and raise awareness about the good work it is doing in the community. The Foundation distributed information about their upcoming Believe in the Cure Cycling Tour in which a young man infected with the hepatitis b virus will ride his bike from Pensacola, Fla., to Philadelphia to promote awareness of hepatitis B. Foundation representatives were also available to answer questions from local residents as well as discuss public health programs that the Foundation offers the community.

This has been a turning point in the history of the Headquarters Multinational Corps Northeast (HQ MNC NE). With the successful completion of the exercise „Brilliant Capability 2016”, the Corps – Custodian of Regional Security – has become operationally capable to assume command of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, also referred to as the “spearhead force”. I strongly believe that our team effort will provide tremendous value to NATO. – said Lieutenant General Manfred Hofmann, the Corps Commander, on the occasion of the Distinguished Visitors Day, which took place in Szczecin, 2nd June.

"Whole Hearted Commitment", the 2nd place winners in the San Diego County Library's Teen Battle of the Bands!
2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of World War One and the bicentenary of the opening of the Congress of Vienna – two dates that profoundly shaped the course of history. While in 1814, towards the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the concerted powers of Europe were architects of a new international system, the leaders of 1914 have famously been described as sleepwalkers, stumbling into war.
Today we face complex interconnected challenges – from regional tensions in Ukraine, Syria, South Sudan and the South China Sea to global threats linked to climate change, growing inequality, and the legacy of the financial crisis. With instability rising as 2014 unfolds, how can a greater awareness of history help us deal with emerging threats and reduce the risk of future conflicts? What lessons from the past can help us restore public trust in the international system and the ability of leaders to deliver solutions? And what will future historians say about the leaders of today: were they architects or sleepwalkers?
To create positive narratives for the future and revitalize our commitment to building a global community, the International Peace Institute (IPI) and Salzburg Global Seminar – with generous support from Canada and Norway – will bring leaders from politics, diplomacy, the military, and business together with historians, journalists, political scientists, philosophers, and writers from around the world. This unique conversation will take place between 25 and 29 August at beautiful Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, former home to Max Reinhardt, the founder of the Salzburg Festival.

Press Release – ItsOurFuture.org.nz
The lead-up to Saturdays protests against the TPPA shows the commitment of people across the country to send a message that the government cant ignore, said ItsOurFuture spokesperson Edward Miller.Nationwide day of action against TPPA: “Ignore us at your peril” government warned
“The lead-up to Saturday’s protests against the TPPA shows the commitment of people across the country to send a message that the government can’t ignore”, said ItsOurFuture spokesperson Edward Miller.
A video shows young activists publicising Saturday’s nationwide protests with footage from Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch, and Nelson.
Action in the 22 centres starts at 10am in Raglan and many of the larger centre marches begin at 1pm, including Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
“People have been incredibly creative”, Miller said. “In Christchurch a giant plain-packaged cigarette packet will be marching in the crowd, while Auckland will be led by an enormous Trojan Horse, locked in a tug-of-war between major commercial interests and activist communities.”
“Around the country everyday kiwis will be photographed for a virtual campaign with signs saying ‘I am a ___________ and I say #TPPANoDeal.’ Already this campaign has been very popular.”
“Trade minister Tim Groser needs to recognise that people don’t buy the ‘trust me’ line. They want to be listened to when they say they don’t want the TPPA. And they deserve to be listened to.”
