Built in 1913, Kern’s Bakery is locally significant for its historic significance in industry and commerce and its architectural significance as an industrial example of the Art Deco style. Its period of significance is from 1931 when the building was completed until 1967 during the height of Kern’s popularity. The facade retains a high degree of integrity retaining original materials and design. The rear and side elevations contain rear additions that date from the period of significance illustrating the success of the Kern’s brand as the factory expanded to increase production. The building overall exhibits a high level of integrity. Kern's Bakery became a Knoxville landmark and successful regional bakery business that expanded from Knoxville with other three other factory locations in Virginia and Kentucky and delivery routes spread through the southeast to Nashville, Atlanta and Greenville, SC. It was well known to Knoxville residents from its prominent location that also served as a retail store, and through its unique family-focused outreach to the Knoxville community. Bread was produced at the factory until 2012. The building is a muted version of the Art Deco style. It contains references to classical architecture with its symmetrical central bay and the modern with modest geometric detailing in the doors, transom, sidelights, and cut stone detailing.

86 Mosman St. The former Australian Bank of Commerce. This classical building in the Greek style with Doric and Corinthian columns and a large triangular pediment on the projecting central portico is a dominant feature of the street. It was built in 1891 as the Australian Joint Stock Bank. The tender for its construction was £4,693. The architect was Francis Stanley. By 1892 the Australian Joint Stock Bank had 19 branches in QLD. The Australian Bank of Commerce took it over in 1910 which later became the Bank of NSW in 1931. It is now the World Theatre cinema complex. It should be open between 10 am and 1 pm on Fridays. Check out the foyer. Upstairs in the Board Room is a painting of the murder of the Board Chairman in 1901. The Haygarth shooting by a disgruntled employee.

UPS--LOUISVILLE, KY (18 Sep 15) The military and civilian delegation from Djibouti toured Louisville's UPS Worldport on Thursday. The Kentucky National Guard hosted several members of Djibouti's military and government cabinets as part of the Kentucky Guard's State Partnership with Djibouti. Civilian members of the Djiboutian delegation include ministers of health, foreign affairs, chambers of commerce, and the University of Djibouti. The military chiefs of defense, Air Force, logistics, military education and materiel represented the Djiboutian military. This is the first Djiboutian partnership event in Kentucky since the National Guard selected Kentucky for this state partnership. A Kentucky delegation led by Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Emerald Hill, once a quiet residential area for wealthy Peranakan and Chinese merchant families in the 19th century, is known for its well-preserved shophouses with distinctive Straits Chinese architectural styles. I love this Art Deco skyscraper! It showed up several times in last year's 365, but I don't think I've included yet this year. The Canadian Bank of Commerce headquarters was completed in 1931 and designed by Darling & Pearson with York & Sawyer. At 132 meters/434 feet (34 storeys), it was the tallest building in the British Commonwealth from the time it was completed until 1962. The faces close to the top of the tower are part of the 32nd floor observation deck, which has been closed for many years.
The Canadian Bank of Commerce merged with the Imperial Bank of Canada in 1961 to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC). Although they went on to build the Commerce Court complex on this site, they thankfully kept this historic structure and supplemented with other buildings.
