Frangipane undoubtedly appears to best advantage in his comical secular representations, depicted in a realistic manner with a satirical and often scabrous iconography. This Satire on the performance of a madrigal relates to the signed work, of similar dimensions, in the collection of the Comte F. de Liederkecke, Château de Leefdael, Belgium (see Meijer, op. cit., p. 23, no. 16, fig. 33). With its lively composition and naturalistic details, this subject is perhaps the most successful of the artist's non-religious paintings.
Seated to the left of a table, four male singers are performing. Their voices - from left to right bass, alto, tenor and (probably) cantus - are indicated not only by the partbooks they hold but also by their age and appearance. They are singing one of the elegant pieces from Franco-Flemish composer Orlando di Lasso's third book of Madrigals, a setting of a sonnet by Pietro Bembo. Like the texts of many other polyphonic madrigals, this sonnet is a sentimental, docile lament intended to pay homage to an idealized lady.
In direct contrast to the woeful and serious-looking singers are the figures gathered around them, a motley crew clearly in a rowdy and playful mood. They are, from left to right: a satyr, sensuality personified and crowned with oak leaves; two peasants or shepherds with pastoral instruments; in front of them, a Jew is recognizable from his turban with a star, which is about to be pulled by the satyr and which was compulsory for sixteenth-century Venetian Jews; a Bacchus figure, looking drowsy and corpulent; a sniggering man who is holding his finger mockingly to his mouth, apparently amused at something not polite enough to be mentioned out loud; a youth drinking from a jug; and finally a grinning man seated in the right foreground.
The merriment and mockery, like the finger pointed in sarcasm by the last figure, seem to be aimed at the singers and caused in particular by the affected nature of their love song, which obviously puns upon carnal intention. This is made plain by the suggestive still life on the table, strategically placed and hidden behind the tenor's partbook: partly-sliced sausages are grouped in the shape of a phallus, with the aid of some bread. Subsequent and more delicate sensibilities have deemed it necessary to cover up part of the offending still life, but the complete composition can still be seen in the de Liederkecke picture. However, further hints are to be found in other erotic insinuations scattered throughout the painting, such as the bowl of wine and bread Bacchus is holding in one hand and the sausage in the other, the bare thigh of the drinking youth and the predatory attitude of the cat on the bass's lap. The cat, a well-established symbol of sexuality, is about to pounce on the ring-ouzel perched on the sword-hilt of the man seated in the foreground. The oblivious bird joins in the singing presumably in an attempt to fill the missing fifth part in Lasso's score. The underlying idea of this representation is thus that there is a sub-current of eroticism and carnal desires hiding behind the elevated musical expression of infatuation.

This photo is of a shoe being looked at by a giant figure. As soon as i saw his expression of his face i wanted him to be looking at myt sheo. He looks puzzled and somewhat like he was fooled. Its a comical photo and the purely black and white with browns gives the photo unity over the quite detailed graffiti.

Last night, the Oakville Camera Club (OCC) descended upon downtown Oakville for a photo outing. The subject was night photography.
It was quite comical to see about 30 people tramping around downtown Oakville, all with cameras & tripods in hand. We certainly got a few curious looks from people & a number of people on the street stopped me to ask me what was going on.

As you have probably noticed from my photostream, Night Photography is one of my favourite subjects. Kieley, our club president, asked me to address the group and say a few words about how I approach the subject of Night Photography.
Here is my approach ...
- I never use a tripod as I like to stay mobile and shoot almost 99% handheld, where I can, I will use a wall or some structure for stability
- I shoot primarily with a prime lens, Canon 50mm f1.4 on my 40D if I am shooting digital and usually shoot wide open at 1600 iso as I feel that the noise in the image adds to the ambience of the image ... don't be afraid of noise ... enjoy it.
- I prefer to explore shallow Depth of Field in night shots as it takes advantage of wonderful bokeh offered with the many lights in the background and I feel it adds a sense of mystery or curiosity to the image when shapes are not razor sharp.
- My favourite time to shoot at night is during or after a rain as the lights are reflected off the street
- I look for interesting light and shadows and not a specific subject
- What I like best about Night Photography is it allows me to view Oakville from a very different perspective from the everyday life on the street
- I hate HDR in general but especially for night photos as shadows and what is not seen in an image is just as important as what you can see

From troubles of the world I turn to ducks,
Beautiful comical things
Sleeping or curled
Their heads beneath white wings
By water cool,
Or finding curious things
To eat in various mucks

Sailor-like on the shores
Of ponds, or paddling
- Left! Right! - with fanlike feet
Which are for steady oars
When they (white galleys) float
Each bird a boat
Rippling at will the sweet
Wide waterway ...
When night is fallen you creep
Upstairs, but drakes and dillies
Nest with pale water-stars.
Moonbeams and shadow bars,
And water-lilies:
Fearful too much to sleep
Since they've no locks
To click against the teeth
Of weasel and fox.
And warm beneath
Are eggs of cloudy green
Whence hungry rats and lean
Would stealthily suck
New life, but for the mien
The hold ferocious mien
Of the mother-duck.

Yes, ducks are valiant things
On nests of twigs and straws,
And ducks are soothy things
And lovely on the lake
When that the sunlight draws
Thereon their pictures dim
In colours cool.
And when beneath the pool
They dabble, and when they swim
And make their rippling rings,
0 ducks are beautiful things!
But ducks are comical things:-
As comical as you.
Quack!
They waddle round, they do.
They eat all sorts of things,
And then they quack.
By barn and stable and stack
They wander at their will,
But if you go too near
They look at you through black
Small topaz-tinted eyes
And wish you ill.
Triangular and clear
They leave their curious track
In mud at the water's edge,
And there amid the sedge
And slime they gobble and peer
Saying 'Quack! quack!'
III
When God had finished the stars and whirl of coloured suns
He turned His mind from big things to fashion little ones;
Beautiful tiny things (like daisies) He made, and then
He made the comical ones in case the minds of men
Should stiffen and become
Dull, humourless and glum,
And so forgetful of their Maker be
As to take even themselves - quite seriously.
Caterpillars and cats are lively and excellent puns:
All God's jokes are good - even the practical ones!
And as for the duck, I think God must have smiled a bit
Seeing those bright eyes blink on the day He fashioned it.
And he's probably laughing still at the sound that came out of its bill!
