almost comical to watch, they will be seen throwing clods or pieces of stalks into the air. One birds actions will suddenly inspire others to react and soon a whole group will be "dancin", from what I understand this activity tends to strengthen bonds
From watching Buzzards above the moors near Harden Moss to following a heron on the canal with a few comical goats thrown in I didn't have a bad weekend really. The Buzzards seemed to appear out of nowhere as usual, moving fast and flying high they took a bit of tracking. The heron on the other hand took an hour to walk from the other side of the reservoir to a point close to me. it stopped at an awkward angle for me to photograph it without me moving and being seen. It then did a short flight to the canal, I moved and sat on a parapet wall above a deep drop in to a canal lock. The heron skipped over the canal and came so close that I had to lean back as far as I could without actually moving and being seen just to get the bird in the frame. At times I could only get partial shots. It them flew past me, almost brushing me and landed nearby on the towpath. Fortunately on this Saturday evening it was quiet and as it walked along the towpath I shadowed it at a distance, it flew in to the canal and was eventually frightened off by dogs. My arms were killing me I'd been holding the lens and camera in front of me non stop for an hour, fighting the cramp in my left arm. The things we do.
The goats on the wall top were a bit of a distraction as I followed three Buzzards messing around in a field near a farm in the afternoon and I snatched a few shots, the one behind was headbutting the others from behind to make them keep moving, very comical.

- Soy "bacon" bits
- 1 cube vegetable stock
- Sour cream instead of crème fraîche
Unfortunately, this dish was edible, but far from spectacular. The fault lies not in Oliver’s recipe, but my soy “bacon” bit substitution, which lacked the fat and proper flavor profile to tie the ingredients together.

This event was comical. The Chick in the middle is trying to keep the Chick on the right from receiving a load of Krill. Its efforts failed but this was a common behavior. No wonder one Chick was so much larger that another in the same nest. Krill is easily visible going from the adult to the chick.

This view of a Sandhill Crane is always a bit comical. I like their eyes, and they have a pretty good range of vision. This color is untouched, their eyes really can be almost as red as their heads, sometimes they are more orange or gold. Part of that may be seasonal, as some birds' eye color, and even beak and feather color intensifies just before and during mating season. This one apparently means "watch you don't hurt your ass on that pointy edge" :)

With an almost comical hairstyle, western grebes stand out in the wetland system west of the dunes during spring or fall migration. With intense red eyes, they look for small amphibians or fish, then use their long neck and sharp yellow beak to capture them. They are also known for their spectacular mating dance, where a pair will run across the water side by side with their necks curved forward. Western grebes are one of 250 bird species that have been observed at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Our celebration of the #YearOfTheBird continues!

A 1st century BC Hellenistic gargoyle representing a comical cook-slave from Ai Khanoum, Afghanistan
The term gargoyle is most often applied to medieval work, but throughout all ages some means of water diversion, when not conveyed in gutters, was adopted. In Ancient Egyptian architecture, gargoyles showed little variation, typically in the form of a lion's head.[5] Similar lion-mouthed water spouts were also seen on Greek temples, carved or modeled in the marble or terracotta cymatium of the cornice.[6] An excellent example of this are the 39 remaining lion-headed water spouts on the Temple of Zeus. There were originally 102 gargoyles or spouts, but due to the heavy weight (they were crafted from marble), many have snapped off and had to be replaced.[7]
Many medieval cathedrals included gargoyles and chimeras. The most famous examples are those of Notre Dame de Paris. Although most have grotesque features, the term gargoyle has come to include all types of images. Some gargoyles were depicted as monks, or combinations of real animals and people, many of which were humorous. Unusual animal mixtures, or chimeras, did not act as rainspouts and are more properly called grotesques. They serve more as ornamentation, but are now synonymous with gargoyles.
Both ornamented and unornamented water spouts projecting from roofs at parapet level were a common device used to shed rainwater from buildings until the early eighteenth century. From that time, more and more buildings bought drainpipes to carry the water from the guttering roof to the ground and only very few buildings using gargoyles were constructed. This was because some people were scared of them, and some heavy ones fell off causing other damage. In 1724, the London Building Act passed by the Parliament of Great Britain made the use of downpipes compulsory on all new construction.[8]

Gargoyles were viewed in two ways by the church throughout history. Often gargoyles were used to assist the Church in conveying messages to the common people. Since literacy was uncommon, images were the best way to constantly convey ideas. Gargoyles were used as a representation of evil. It is thought that they were used to scare people into coming to church, reminding them that the end of days is near. It is also thought that their presence assured congregants that evil is kept outside of the church’s walls.[9] However, some medieval clergy viewed gargoyles as a form of idolatry. In the 12th century a church leader named St. Bernard of Clairvaux was famous for speaking out against gargoyles.
What are these fantastic monsters doing in the cloisters before the eyes of the brothers as they read? What is the meaning of these unclean monkeys, these strange savage lions, and monsters? To what purpose are here placed these creatures, half beast, half man, or these spotted tigers? I see several bodies with one head and several heads with one body. Here is a quadruped with a serpent's head, there a fish with a quadruped's head, then again an animal half horse, half goat... Surely if we do not blush for such absurdities, we should at least regret what we have spent on them.[10]

Tanuki may be shown with their testicles flung over their backs like travellers' packs, or using them as drums.
From watching Buzzards above the moors near Harden Moss to following a heron on the canal with a few comical goats thrown in I didn't have a bad weekend really. The Buzzards seemed to appear out of nowhere as usual, moving fast and flying high they took a bit of tracking. The heron on the other hand took an hour to walk from the other side of the reservoir to a point close to me. it stopped at an awkward angle for me to photograph it without me moving and being seen. It then did a short flight to the canal, I moved and sat on a parapet wall above a deep drop in to a canal lock. The heron skipped over the canal and came so close that I had to lean back as far as I could without actually moving and being seen just to get the bird in the frame. At times I could only get partial shots. It them flew past me, almost brushing me and landed nearby on the towpath. Fortunately on this Saturday evening it was quiet and as it walked along the towpath I shadowed it at a distance, it flew in to the canal and was eventually frightened off by dogs. My arms were killing me I'd been holding the lens and camera in front of me non stop for an hour, fighting the cramp in my left arm. The things we do.
The goats on the wall top were a bit of a distraction as I followed three Buzzards messing around in a field near a farm in the afternoon and I snatched a few shots, the one behind was headbutting the others from behind to make them keep moving, very comical.

My cat-lover brother made this kitty out of 3/4in. spruce, hand painted the details and finished him with a clear oil based waterproofing sealant. His inside measurements are 7'1/2'' deep by 3'1/2 wide by 5'1/2 tall. His mouth opening is approx. 1' by 1' 1/2'. The back end opens up with two screws for a yearly cleaning.

Curiosity won over the vet clinic with his comical confidence. I took him there in a harness. He would explore away from me for a while, but whenever I called his name, he'd turn and run to me and hug my leg as high up as he could reach. What a precious boy!
We are going to try resorting to an old-school immune booster for Curiosity: ImmunoRegulin. I just ordered it on-line. My vet hasn't used it in about ten years. It's worth a try. I'll be giving him shots at least once per week (twice per week for the first one to two weeks). If it works, after three months we can go down to monthly injections. I truly would love for the immune boost to work. That mixed with prayer. . . see what happens. At this point Curiosity isn't well enough to advertise for adoption (although I think the vet techs would take him home if they had room. . . ). Maybe one day this adorable boy will be able to find a forever home. . . he is welcome in our home till that day comes. . .

Paul Heidemann (1884-1968) was a German stage and screen actor, film director and film producer. He was famous for his comical parts.
Paul Heidemann was born in Cologne, Germany in 1884. After an initial career in the tobacco branch, he took acting lessons from the Meiningen-based court actor Leopold Teller. In 1906 he debuted in Hanau as Prince Karl-Heinz in the operetta Alt-Heidelberg (Old Heidelberg). In 1909, he joined the theatre of Breslau, where he sang in Bruno Granichstaedten’s operetta Bub oder Mädel (Boy or Girl). Here Heidemann created his reputation as a talented comedian. On the recommendation of composer Jean Gilbert, he moved to Berlin in 1911, where he debuted in Gilbert’s play Die keusche Susanne (The Chaste Susanne). Franz Porten discovered Heidemann for the cinema, where he played his first lead in Das Brandmal ihrer Vergangenheit/The Stigma of Her Past (1912). It was followed by films such as Das Teufelsloch/The Devil's Hole (Rudolf Del Zopp, 1913), and Vater und Sohn/Father and Son (Alfred Halm, 1914) with Leopoldine Konstantin. From 1913 to 1915 he also played the character Teddy in countless comical shorts, such as Teddy ist herzkrank/Teddy has a Heart Condition (1914), Teddys Geburtstagsgeschenk/Teddy's Birthday Present (1915) and Teddy züchtet Notkartoffeln/teddy breeds emergency potatoes (1915). Sometimes he directed these films as well. Between 1919 and 1923 Heidemann had his own production company, Paul Heidemann-Film GmbH in Berlin, where he played the lead in films initially mostly directed by Erich Schönefelder and later on rather by Georg Schubert or by Heidemann himself. A late example is Eine kleine Freundin braucht ein jeder Mann/Every man Needs A little Friend (Paul Heidemann, 1927), starring Heidemann but also Julius Falkenstein, Hans Albers, Siegfried Arno and Charlotte Ander.
In the 1920s, Paul Heidemann became an important supporting actor and sometimes leading man in various films. He had a supporting part in the silent comedy classic Die Bergkatze/The Wild Cat (Ernst Lubitsch, 1921) featuring Pola Negri as a wild mountain girl and bandit’s daughter. Heidemann played the lead in the silent historical comedy Der kleine Napoleon/The Little Napoleon (Georg Jacoby, 1923). It depicts the life and romantic adventures of Jérôme Bonaparte, the younger brother of Napoleon (Egon von Hagen), who installed him as King of Westphalia. The film also marked Marlene Dietrich's debut and was made by the European Film Alliance, a failed attempt by the American studio Paramount to establish a production base in the lucrative German market. The EFA was wound up shortly after the film's completion, which delayed its release. It finally premièred on 29 November 1923 at the legendary Berlin movie palace Marmorhaus. He often played in comedies, such Der Sprung ins Leben/Leap Into Life (Johannes Guter, 1923) with Xenia Desni, Das süsse Mädel/The Sweet Girl (Manfred Noa, 1926) with Mary Nolan and Mary Parker, Die dritte Eskadron/The Third Squadron (Carl Wilhelm, 1926) with Claire Rommer, Flucht aus der Hölle/Escape from Hell (Georg Asagaroff, 1928) with Heidemann, Jean Murat and Agnes Esterhazy, and Flucht vor der Liebe/The flight from love (Hans Behrendt, 1930) with Jenny Jugo and Enrico Benfer. Heidemann acted often as the sidekick of the popular actor Hans Albers, such as in Der lachende Ehemann/The Laughing Husband (Rudolf Walther-Fein, Rudolf Dworsky, 1926) and the crime drama Hans in allen Gassen/Hans of all trades (Carl Froelich, 1930). Other silent films, in which Heidemann played supporting parts were the drama Die Geliebte/The Mistress (Robert Wiene, 1927) with Harry Liedtke, and Unter der Laterne/Under the Lantern (Gerhard Lamprecht, 1928) starring Lissi Arna. He played the lead in the silent drama Der Zigeunerprimas/The Gypsy Chief (Carl Wilhelm, 1929). Simultaneously Heidemann acted on the Berlin stages, mainly in operettas.
After the introduction of sound film, Paul Heidemann continued to appear in supporting parts in many German films. An example is the comedy Pension Schöller (Georg Jacoby, 1930) starring Paul Henckels and Elga Brink. It is an adaptation of the 1890 play 'Pension Schöller' by Wilhelm Jacoby and Carl Laufs. Georg Jacoby was Wilhelm's son and made three film adaptations of his father's best-known play in 1930, 1952 and 1960. Heidemann played the following year in the romantic comedy Ihre Hoheit befiehlt/Her Grace Commands (Hanns Schwarz, 1931) about a hairdresser (Käthe von Nagy) and a greengrocer (Willy Fritsch) who fall in love and conceal from each other the truth that they are a Princess and an army officer in disguise. When in the early 1930s military comedies were popular, Heidemann acted in various military farces such as Wenn die Soldaten.../When the soldiers... (Luise & Jakob Fleck, 1931) with Otto Walburg, Schön ist die Manöverzeit/Manoeuver Time Is Fine (Erich Schönfelder, 1931) with Ida Wüst, Die Mutter der Kompanie/The Company's Mother (Franz Seitz senior, 1931), Drei von der Kavallerie/Number Three Cavalryman (Carl Boese, 1932) with Paul Hörbiger and Fritz Kampers, and Liebe in Uniform/Love in Uniform (Georg Jacoby, 1932). Among his most well-known productions are Der tolle Bomberg/The Mad Bomberg (Georg Asagaroff, 1932) with Heidemann in the lead, Ganovenehre/Crook's Honour (Richard Oswald, 1932) with Fritz Kampers, Paprika (1932, Carl Boese) with Franciska Gaál, Narren im Schnee/Fools in the snow (Hans Deppe, 1939) with Anny Ondra, and Schneider Wibbel/Tailor Wibbel (Viktor de Kowa, 1939) with Erich Ponto. During the Second World War, Heidemann worked again as a film director. He staged film comedies, such as Mein Mann darf es nicht wissen/My Husband must not Know (1940) with Mady Rahl, Krach im Vorderhaus/Noise in the Front House (1941) again with Rahl, Weisse Wäsche/White laundry (1942) with Harald Paulsen, and Floh im Ohr/Flea in Her Ear (1943), even if the films were not huge hits. In the 1950s, he acted both in BRD and DDR films. In East Germany, he played Presskopp in the old Berlin farce Ein Polterabend'/A Stag Night (Curt Bois, 1955) and the mayor in Bärenburger Schnurre/Bärenburg Farce (Ralf Kirsten, 1957). He also acted in West-German films like Torreani (Gustav Fröhlich, 1951), Der keusche Josef/The Chaste Joseph (Carl Boese, 1953), Rittmeister Wronski/Cavalry Captain Wronski (Ulrich Erfurth, 1954), Der Mustergatte/The Model Husband (Erik Ode, 1956) and Jede Nacht in einem anderen Bett/Every night in a Different Bed (Paul Verhoeven, 1957). Paul Heidemann died in Berlin in 1968. He was 83.

I have a confession to make.....
I love these planthoppers with their comical faces and defiant "V for victory" stances, but I have been deceiving you all in the many previous posts I have made of this particular species. They exist ONLY on the underside of leaves in deep shade, so this and all past images have been posted upside-down. I photograph them with the camera inverted to get the best flash angle which of course gives the impression of light falling from above and casting shadows behind. BUT, if you turn your monitor 180 degrees, you will see they just don't look the same in their natural orientation if only because our brains can't cope with gravity-defying inversion. So I apologize for my orientation deception which explains why when you are out looking for these (and I know you all do) you can never find them. My bad!
