The youngsters have been out with their parents the past week. Comical to watch. They constantly flutter their wings while perched (to keep balance?). One lost it's balance and tipped backward, but didn't let go. it was hanging upside-down. Unfortunately, they have been flying into our windows, but now seem to have learned they cannot do that.

Backyard, Richmond, BC

It was comical watching it try to land on those tiny branches. It finally gave up & flew elsewhere.

Robber flies are so comical viewed up close. The eyes get me every time.

From various online sources: Robber flies are generally considered beneficial insects in Pennsylvania. They are predatory insects, meaning they eat other insects, which can help control populations of pest insects in gardens and other environments.

Robber flies are voracious predators, both as adults and larvae. They eat a wide variety of other insects, including pest insects like aphids, grasshopper eggs, grubs, and beetle pupae.

Robber flies are generalist predators, meaning they don't specialize in eating just one type of insect. This makes them effective at controlling different types of pests.

While they can bite if mishandled, robber flies are not pests in the way that some other insects are. They don't damage plants or crops.

By preying on other insects, robber flies help to naturally regulate insect populations, reducing the need for chemical pesticides.

Their predatory behavior makes them a valuable addition to gardens, where they can help keep pest populations under control.

An old school mate who I actually grew up with asked me to take some pics at his wedding, well this was his redo in this country for family and friends that couldn't get to the original wedding in Greece.

This little boy was great, a real character.

Geese are so comical when they land on ice. I watched these geese land and tried to hold my camera steady while I laughed at them slipping and sliding...

puffins having a domestic lol

i have not been out for a couple of weeks now ,and am concentrating on processing some of my old shots properly ,rather than just filling up hard drive space with pics that don't get done properly .seems to be working anyway

Porcupine Grey Bruce, Ontario, Canada. The look on the porcupines face was very expressive and kind off comical.

Meerkats may look like prairie dogs, are really related to the mongoose. These comical creatures are inquisitive and alert at all times, you see them busily digging in the dirt looking for insects, making underground burrows.

These little carnivores live and work together in a group called a gang or a mob, helping each other to care for youngsters or keep a lookout for danger. If trouble is spotted, the lookout alerts the others and they all dash back into the burrows for safety. Fun to watch! :)

The Meerkat (aka: Suricate) is a small species of foraging mammal found inhabiting harsh open conditions in the semi-desert plains in southern Africa.

A member of the Mongoose family, Meerkats differ from Mongoose species in a number of ways with the biggest difference being that Meerkats are incredibly sociable animals, where most Mongooses are not.

Hope you enjoyed!

"Good Night, Paul" is a 1918 American silent comedy romance film directed by Walter Edwards. It was based on a successful stage play with book and lyrics by Roland Oliver and Charles Dickson and music by Harry B. Olsen. The film was produced by Lewis J. Selznick's Select Pictures Corporation.

The film a farce that entails a wife willing to pose as a wife of her husband's business partner as a scheme to hoodwink the business partner's uncle out of money. But the uncle's overextended visit forces schemers to keep up the charade leading to comical situations.

Plot

Richard (Kerry) and Paul (Ford), two business partners, are about to shipwreck on the financial rocks when Richard reminds Paul that his uncle could help them out as Paul is his heir. Uncle Batiste (Steppling) is at that time on the way to New York City as he is dangerously ill and desires to see Paul. Batiste is a bachelor and wants to see Paul a happy man. When he arrives he tells Paul that if he were married that he would be happy to provide all the money needed for the business. Richard's bride (Talmadge) has a bright idea and decides to make the uncle believe that she is Paul's wife instead of Richard's. She locks Richard in the bathroom while she goes into the parlor to hoodwink the uncle. Paul is speechless over the situation but his need for money persuades him to be a party to the deception, given that it will only be necessary to do this for a few hours. However, the uncle is so happy with the bride that he decides to stay for a month, and returns with his trained nurse, who turns out to be Paul's boyhood sweetheart, the girl he has never been able to forget. After several complications, only a confession can clear the trouble.

Cast

Constance Talmadge as Mrs. Richard Landers.

Harrison Ford as Paul Boudeaux.

Norman Kerry as Richard Landers.

Beatrice Van as Rose Hartley.

John Steppling as Batiste Boudeaux.

Rosita Marstini as Madame Julie.

With Zasu Pitts.

Reception

Like many American films of the time, Good Night, Paul was subject to cuts by city and state film censorship boards. For example, the Chicago Board of Censors cut, in Reel 3, young woman in diaphanous nightgown and scene of same with group and the intertitle "What could Richard think? What could any loving husband think?

.They surf in the bubble of confinement, social distances make up their mouths with lipstick talk...You're the only one who can make your lips blush...Lipstick sales have seen an uptick during economic slowdowns, and history is proof. But, will this theory hold true post Covid-19? Or will eye makeup take over, given face masks would be the new normal hereafter.

A trend no one could have predicted, the question is, will masks continue to be a fashion staple and stand the test of time post-outbreak? That’s anyone’s guess. For now, I’m off to get my hands on a Resting Risk Face personalised mask – the best and most comical option to date IMO.

Stylist Isha Bhansali feels there will definitely be more focus on eye makeup. “The lips can adopt a nude, blush palette. Digital appearances will be the need of the hour, for which you don’t need masks. You can’t totally rule out lip makeup,”she says.

Beauty expert and influencer Jason Arland believes people are going to spend more on skincare and beauty post Covid-19. “The growing rise of makeup tutorials during the lockdown has pushed many people to buy beauty products online. And it will only increase post the pandemic as people would want to take care of their skin,” he adds.

Designer Anvita Sharma opines, “The lipstick theory will come true, and both men and women will spend more on makeup. Eye makeup will surely gain more prominence as everyone will be covering their face with masks in the post-pandemic era.”

Leah Chernikoff is the former head of content at Glossier, Inc., and the former digital director of ELLE Magazine.

I was at my book club two weeks ago—via Zoom, of course—where the featured guest was none other than internet-beloved cookbook author Alison Roman. Members asked her about pantry stocking, recipe substitutions and using fewer dishes, but finally, someone brought up what we were all thinking: What’s that lipstick you have on?

I looked at Roman’s Brady Bunch square on the screen. It was brightly lit, and she looked great with her hair neatly parted down the middle in a low bun and a swipe of red lipstick. (It was Maybelline’s Baby Lips in Crystal, she divulged.) I stared at my own square. It was poorly lit, and I hadn’t put on makeup in weeks. It hadn’t even occurred to me. As my pallid face stared back at me, I cringed a little: Why hadn’t it?

Sure, part of it is pandemic-related anxiety and figuring out how to work and take care of my 2-year-old at the same time. Plus, I’ve never been someone who wears a lot of makeup or partakes in a multi-step skincare routine. But after more than a decade working in fashion and beauty, I understand the power of putting on a little mascara and lipstick. I had just chosen not to.

As we’re all adjusting to a terrifying new world indoors and isolated from others, thinking about one’s appearance can feel trivial, selfish even. Who cares about makeup at a time like this? Don’t we have much more important things to worry about?

“Not wearing makeup is less about saying, ‘F-ck it’ and more about redirecting time and resources to focus on the things that matter,” says Julia Cheiffetz, a publisher at Simon & Schuster in New York. “Makeup does not matter.” There’s something subversive about going barefaced too, says novelist and fashion marketer Lauren Mechling. “It’s one of the few pleasures of this godawful moment, my bra burning if you will.”

Still, those who have stuck to their pre-pandemic makeup and skincare routines aren’t necessarily acting out of vanity. They may just be trying to feel sane. According to Dr. Stewart Shankman, chief of psychology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, establishing and maintaining routines that boost one’s mood can be beneficial.

“This COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented time of uncertainty and uncontrollability. So people putting makeup on will give them a sense of control given what’s going on outside is uncontrollable,” he explains. “What people are doing when they’re putting on makeup or getting dressed is they’re doing something to improve their mood, and we know from research studies and interventions that when people can control their mood, it helps their sense of well-being.”

Samari Blair, a first-year medical student at University of Florida in Gainesville, had been feeling a little down after days of quarantine, online classes and staying in her pajamas. So on a recent Sunday afternoon she decided to do her hair and makeup and put on “normal-people clothes.” She took a few selfies and posted them on Twitter. “Getting dressed and putting on makeup just made me feel a lot better,” says Blair. “It made me more confident. People always say, ‘If you look good, you do good.’”

It’s hard to untangle the way we view ourselves with and without makeup from society’s longstanding expectation that women and femme people be “presentable.” A 2011 study commissioned by Procter & Gamble (which at the time owned beauty brands like Max Factor and CoverGirl) but authored by clinical psychologists at Harvard, Boston University and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute asked participants to evaluate 25 women in various states of being made up: natural, professional and glamorous. When the women were wearing either the professional or glamorous makeup looks, they were perceived to be more competent. But a 2017 study found that female college students who applied makeup before taking a simulated exam actually did better than those who didn’t. “Makeup can definitely boost confidence and mood,” says Rocco Palumbo, an assistant professor of psychology at the University G. d’Annunzio in Chieti, Italy, who was the lead researcher. “Our research shows that participants were able to improve their confidence and, therefore, improve their performance.” He adds the caveat that makeup is just one of many factors that can improve self-esteem and that individuals who don’t usually wear makeup may not see the same results.

For people with jobs that typically require businesswear for in-person meetings, video calls can come with the same set of unstated expectations. Kara Lowery, a D.C.-based lawyer, still puts on a full face of makeup, including a bright lipstick, and a nice top. “I try to make it so that I don’t look so drab,” she says, adding that on days when she’s feeling especially down and anxious she makes an extra effort with her makeup “to bring a sense of happiness” and feel better about herself.

Still, several women told me they saw an opportunity to Marie Kondo their beauty and skincare routine and consider which parts spark joy and which parts they felt constrained into doing.

“Finding out whether you’re doing these things because you want to or if you do it for other people, this is a good time to test that,” says Seattle-based writer and speaker Ijeoma Oluo. “I got ready to shave my legs and was like, ‘Uh I don’t want to.’ So then I didn’t.” Oluo, who hosts weekly Facebook Live makeup tutorials, says makeup also has allowed her to connect with people. “It’s reminding me that I’m still here,” she says. “That I can still do things I enjoy.”

Meanwhile, Charlotte Lescroart, who works for an educational-software platform in Santa Barbara, Calif., has abandoned the makeup she would normally wear to meet with clients but upgraded her skincare routine, which previously consisted of splashing water on her face. Now she cleanses with a Clarisonic she “dug out from college” and a cleanser from an upscale brand, followed by a serum and a moisturizer. “It makes me feel like I’m creating a routine for myself,” she says. “The confidence I used to get from interacting with people, now I get that from feeling confident about my skin.”

With news of the coronvirus’ impact on the economy, travel and, of course, health, it’s hard to imagine the deadly virus having fostered the start of a new fashion trend – but, that it seemingly has.

As we speak, the fashion industry, like many others, is taking a considerable hit due to the outbreak. Fashion shows in Asia and Europe are being affected, with Chinese visitors down across the board, and events, such as Seoul fashion week, Georgio Armani’s Milan show, and Beijing fashion week either being cancelled or postponed. And with Chinese spend having accounted for a third of luxury global market sales in 2018, according to Bain & Company, the fall in attendance at the key events will undoubtedly have even further implications for the fashion world in the next few months.

However, while the doom and gloom of the virus seeps into industries across the board, impacting the economy at a devastating rate, there are a couple of winners at least, with hand sanitizer sales skyrocketing since the outbreak, and Alibaba having reported a surge in spend on cosmetics, including a 150 percent increase on eyeshadow palettes, with lipstick sales up sevenfold for some brands, according to Reuters. Why? Quarantining and extra spare time due to ongoing closure of public events is seemingly giving rise to at-home make-up trials.

However, the most surprising upshot of the global epidemic is that face masks, in all shapes, sizes, colors and flamboyancy, have seemingly broken the internet.

With the epidemic showing no signs of abating, surgical face masks are selling like hot cakes across the globe, with consumers falling over themselves to help prevent the spread of the virus, despite their effectiveness being called into question. And while some down sides to the new trend are emerging, with some consumers reportedly feeling no need to apply make-up when covered by a mask, according to Lifestyle Inquirer, which could in turn have repercussions for cosmetics sales, it seems this is definitely the exception, not the rule. In fact, such is the lure of these masks, that the world of fashion and fame is taking notice – with options of all shapes, sizes and styles being the must-have item of the season.

Indeed, the celebs are already embracing the trend, whether it’s virus-related or not; Cardi B donned an elaborate bejewelled mask to her husband Offset’s fashion show in January while Billie Eilish stepped out in a stylish Gucci option at this year’s Grammy Awards. Likewise, the few fash-pack members that did brave public events to watch the shows were also upping the ante in terms of style, with designer masks the new accessory to coordinate with the latest on-trend ensembles. And the masks have even made it onto the catwalk itself – Marine Serre showcased a slew of face cover-up designs at her Fall 2020 ready-to-wear collection show, although she can’t give the coronavirus credit for this inspired range, with the items billed as ‘anti-pollution’ masks and designed pre COVID-19 outbreak.

There is no right answer when it comes to how to approach beauty in these fraught times. If it doesn’t feel right for you right now, that’s fine. But if it does? There is no reason to feel ashamed. “I wouldn’t say dressing nice or putting on makeup is frivolous,” says Dr. Shankman. “There’s nothing disrespectful about it. It’s a coping strategy for people to feel a sense of normalcy.”

The day after that virtual book club, I decided to put on a little mascara and a lip tint. It wasn’t Alison Roman’s bold red lip, but it was something. In less than a minute, I felt a little less like I was living through one unending mushy day and a little more like myself.

FANNY BAY is a small hamlet in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is located on Baynes Sound on the east coast of Vancouver Island. In 2001, its population was listed as 815. It is best known for its fine oysters. The area is served by the Island Highway and Island Rail Corridor. There is no consensus on the origin of the name Fanny Bay and none of the various explanations — comical, romantic, local or historical — can be considered without skepticism. The name first appeared on British Columbia maps in 1913 and was officially adopted by the government in 1923.

The FANNY BAY Post Office was established - 1 February 1916.

The tree was to be featured in Rihanna's 'We Found Love' video.

Rihanna caused a media storm when the local farmer told her to cover up after she stripped down for filming in his field.

He was fetching his tractor when he saw her and found her scantily clad outfit unacceptable.

The video went on to win the best video of the year award at the MTV VMAs.

Had to get a shot before the tree falls completely apart.

It looks so insanely comical!

Though, if Rihanna ever wants to come back, I’m available to take a photo!

hehe i shouldn’t laugh, but after watching a coot fall through the ice the previous day this time it was the water rail’s turn and i managed to catch the moment he did!

cute little birds, he was having a right stomp-about just before he fell in, and getting in the way of a number of the mallards – i wish id got a shot of one next to him as if you haven’t seen them, they are very petite and look quite comical besides the other ducks!

he also had a bit of a wander in the mud – which didn’t make for great photos – but it was interesting to see him use that long bill to pull up roots (see below pic)

hope everyone is having a good week – by ‘ek its windy here at the mo! - sorry i am behind again with people's streams but will be catching up soon!

Lesson learned is don’t drive so fast on a curve where there is a driveway with two boulders at the end of it. You can see the teen driver and his companions trying to figure out what to do next after they’ve driven over the bolder and dragged it a good 20 feet from beside our driveway to the middle of the neighbors. Whoops! Love each of their expressions and can almost imagine captions to go in little thought bubbles with each of them.

McGill's Midland Bluebird operated ADL Enviro200 YX15 OXN - 8026 - is pictured in Stirling city centre with a service on route 52.

This vehicle wears the McGill's West corporate livery and features a comically large font on the side display that has absolutely zero chance of being useful in its current state. How did someone manage to mess that up lol. It seems to have been fixed since then although it may be an issue localised to this specific entry in the display module, I don't know. Oh also this bus has since been repainted into the newest Midland Bluebird livery.

What a pleasure to watch this woodpecker in the trees at Cochise Stronghold where we hiked today. We were sitting at a picnic table without a picnic and it flew down from this tree to land on the bench beside me and then to the table between my sister and me. And it posed! SOOC! See on black if you have a moment.

Penguins are such great subjects to photograph. They have comical little personalities, waddling from place to place seemingly with a mission of the utmost importance unless of course they come across something that piques their curiousity (like a photographer sitting on a water surrounded rock in the middle of a cove). I couldn't help photographing this little guy as he popped up out of the water. Having just come from his morning swim, his feather tux was still clean and unmarred from the guano he would soon be trodding through. Although, the opportunity to grab his image was just a few seconds, he seemed to be giving me his best Baywatch Hasselhoff pose or perhaps an ad for Capt. Morgan Rum. Much appreciated

A FACE THAT ONLY A MOTHER COULD LOVE :-)

One of the three that I stalked this day eventually wandered over to my boot, twitched his nose while smelling my boot, hesitated for a second, used his huge tail to propel himself into their comical startled jump while turning away from me and then ran away as fast as he could (i.e. not very) :-)

Armadillos are very strange creatures. You can sneak up on them with no trouble as long as you only move when they have their heads down while rooting around for insects and invertebrates such as beetles, cockroaches, wasps, yellow jackets, fire ants, scorpions, spiders, snails, and white grubs. A lesser part of the diet is comprised of small reptiles and amphibians and mammal, reptile, and bird eggs. Less than 10 percent of the diet is from fruit, seeds, fungi, and other plant matter. The 9 banded Armadillos are the only ones that live in the states. They have moved progressively north over 100 years and it has been very obvious during my lifetime. Originally, I only found them in Louisiana and Texas but now they are all over the southeast and have been found as far north as Illinois.

Even though people have been known to eat them, any significant contact should be avoided as Armadillos are source of leprosy in the U.S. south. The nine-banded was nicknamed “Hoover hog” and “poor man’s pork” by people who blamed President Hoover for the Great Depression.

Texas Aggies appreciate a joke about themselves more than any other group and one once asked me how many Aggies it took to eat an armadillo, I told him that I didn't know - His answer was 2, one to eat it and one to direct traffic. Their startled jump is their undoing when cars pass over them and they jump up into the undercarriage and become the south's most frequent road kill.

Until I drove the B934 (which passes over the comically named Fanny Burn), I'd never seen this view of the impressive Castlehill Reservoir dam before. On the day I took this photo, the sun kept dipping in and out of the clouds. Had the sun broke through when I took this photo, it might not have looked as good as it'd be right over the dam.

Love the way they go after fish... almost comical.

We encountered a gaggle of rheas, a flightless bird that looks so much like the emu of Australia and the ostrich of Africa that I'm sure they could provide evidence that all the continents were at one time connected. At times the rheas looked awkward and comical as they moved, and yet at other times they possessed an uncanny elegance and grace about them.

The Australian magpie, quite a comical bird at times. It kept running over to me when I whistled & was happy to stroll around while I lay on the ground taking its photo. This one obviously isn't breeding, it's breeding season just now & they can be very aggressive when breeding. I've been bitten on the ear by one before, drawing blood. Wolston Creek Bush Reserve, near Riverhills, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

There's a part of this photograph that's almost comical - the tutor (a man, of course) in his buttoned tunic and peaked cap; the blackboard making it look as though the bus to Bury was as complicated as a mathematical formula; the woman on the left who appears to be falling asleep.

But this was a deadly serious business; hundreds of Manchester Corporation Transport staff volunteered to fight when war broke out, and at the same time war factories were gearing up to make everything needed to win the war; and the need to get factory workers to their lathes and benches was crucial.

So women stepped up, hundreds of them being trained as bus conductors and tram drivers (but not bus drivers - that was a step too far for MCTD). This photo taken at the training school in Ardwick is no doubt staged for an official purpose, but the need for staff to keep the buses running was a real pain point throughout the war. Some women even became fitters and made their contribution to keeping the wheels turning.

At the end of the war the men came back - most of them - and the women were summarily dismissed, although they got a 'thank you' dinner at Belle Vue. It was scant reward for the hard work they'd done on the blackout to make their contribution to victory.

We have a 'Manchester's buses at war' exhibition in our museum: if you'd like to see it, go to www.motgm.uk.

ODC - comical

What a comical little thing, full of character!

These guys are pretty comical when they are stretching.

Almost comical in flight.

The brown 'sky' in the background is a dune.
