Despite their squat, comical appearance, Atlantic puffins are accomplished fliers. One particular impressive ability they have is to land backwards. When the wind is at their back the birds will hover and then briefly fly backwards onto the cliff.

In this photo you can see one puffin executing this maneuver forcing another puffin out of the way.

I took this photo on Grimsey Island which has one of the largest puffin colonies in Iceland.

A comical and vivid piece of ceramic public art in La Quinta, Ca. in the Coachella Valley. I wish I could tell you the artist who has a sense of imagination, humor, joy and originality. Those ruby red lips and big eyes keep us fascinated by her charming good looks!

This Great Grey Owl amused me for some time, he knew I had a camera for sure and played up to it

Fledgling blue jays are very comical.

I think I will be "over-posting" for the next few days. I have so many photos that need posting.

Please don't feel obligated to comment, my good friends. If you like something, just give me a high fave. (( :

This was a comically frustrating train to shoot. This was one of the two coal empties that sat in the Ottumwa yard waiting on crews to show up. This was the second to leave, and was the better one as all 6 motors were up front and there was a 70MAC in consist that I make a point of nabbing these days.

Anyway, when it was finally ready to leave, it peeked around the corner and I hopped out of the car to take some photos. Everything seemed normal, but as I lined up my shot [with a different angle and a different lens] it stopped right here. I've seen them pull up to the signal and something go wrong with the PTC so they stop short on the bridge, but not like this.

Well, it turns out that the PTC thought it was on the wrong track so it applied the brakes... While it was sitting here, the engineer on the local [who is a bit of an impatient one] dialed up the CP dispatcher in a tiff. Their dispatcher was trying to reach the train [who was on a different channel] while the train was troubleshooting with the PTC desk. Longer story short, they figured it out after about 20 minutes and were on their way. If there's one thing I learned in my time working on the railroad, it's how to be patient...

The Brown Pelican is a comically elegant bird with an oversized bill, sinuous neck, and big, dark body. Squadrons glide above the surf along southern and western coasts, rising and falling in a graceful echo of the waves. They feed by plunge-diving from high up, using the force of impact to stun small fish before scooping them up. They are fairly common today—an excellent example of a species’ recovery from pesticide pollution that once placed them at the brink of extinction.

I came across this on Facebook and couldn't resist and wanted to share it with you all. It made my laugh, I hope it makes you laugh too.

Brown Creeper ( Finschia novaeseelandiae ) comical wiz kid of the NZ bird world, constantly hunting for food to maintain that high metabolic rate.

Forms loose flocks during winter and communicate continually though rarely pausing for photo shoots.....

This comical Male Grackle must have paraded up and down this small stretch of land at Ensenada lodge for about 20 minutes. Whether there was a Female about that he was trying to impress I'm not sure but it was a great visual and vocal display regardless. Grackles have a very varied repertoire and we certainly heard most of it whilst watching him. Although black looking initially he has a beautiful midnight blue sheen to his feathers, which was apparent even in the shade of the trees. Grackles are not related to crows or any or the Corvid family but are known to be able to problem solve and use tools around them.

(Falco tinnunculus) A bit of a 'snap shot'! It's not the sharpest in the world but I had my gear on a monopod photographing a heron when this kestrel flew over my head. I must have looked a comical sight swinging up a 600mm lens, DSLR and a monopod!

Lying in the centre of my fabric while I attempted to cut out the new cushion covers 😍

Well folks this is the end of the series. This guy decided he had enough and went to higher ground to watch the cavorting between parent and sibling Little Blue's. It was comical to watch and see how it played out with the Black Crown taking to a higher perch and then the look. Thank you everyone for your indulgence, and patience to put up with my nonsense, it is very much appreciated, and have a great day all.

.... how could I not grab a shot of this comical bird???

I am not in the mood for your melody little bird. Everytime I would get closer he would screech louder and more frequent.A mix between a bone chilling curdle and nails down a chalkboard. Ugh! I tried shooting some rubber bands at him that I forgot on my arm. He's lucky I'm a terrible shot. (Full story in comments)

The comical look of the Emu really appealed to me!

Comical in their posturing, young elephant seals practice their sparing prior to mating season. Of course the Bulls, many times their size, will claim all the females for mating this year but they will be back in years to come with hopes held high and the bulk to match.

On a very wet day but the Kingfishers didn't seem to mind.

It was comical when they shook off the raindrops, just becoming a very colourful blur.

Happy weekend my friends!

Pelargonium Webcap I love these the comical conical shaped cap is just lovely.

Always wanted to photograph puffins. Lucky to get a nice bright day for these first images at Dunnet Head in Caithness.

My friend and I went to this thrift store today and saw this Rolls sitting in the parking lot. Had to laugh...

Additional note after 7 comments: Maybe it's not a Rolls, it might be a kit car. I don't know my cars either gina2299. My friend just called it a Rolls, so that's what I thought it was.

An imposter?

So comical and fun to watch!

Comically large shield. Also, I finally got a proper shot of the searchlights.

Comical looking but a serious business. Evzones changing the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier, Athens.

Cute and slightly comical looking birds, aren't they?

It's comical to watch the antics of the ducks and gulls at our local park - This duck flew off with over 20 gulls in hot pursuit they went out of sight down the lough! I wonder if she got to enjoy that piece of bread :-)

The Reddish Egret has some beautiful and comical dance moves. It is always a wonderful show that the Reddish Egret puts on!

Snow covered fields throughout the midwest hide and almost protect the dormant ground underneath. Remnants from the past harvest protrude through the sheltering snow to become nourishment themselves for the growth of new season coming.

...and of course there is the cool barn too!

The plumage is as intensely blue as the legs are comically yellow. The bird's long decurved bill is an adaptation for nectar feeding. The female is a drab green colour. the species is native to tropical South America, as far south as Bolivia. Now assigned to the tanager family (Thraupidae).

THIS I PROMISE YOU - RONAN KEATING

DOWN A COUNTRY LANE

Driving down a country lane in England

had to stop at a fork in the road for a John Deere

turned my head; what did I see

a goat, a giant sheep or a just a weird reflection

in the smeared wing mirror of mini-me?? ; 0))

out I jumped straight into a ditch, which luckily was dryish

(or so I thought!!)

and peered through the dense old thicket hedge

to see what I could espy

a very strange creature looked back at me

and he wasn't the only one

the field beyond was filled with them

but as I turned I couldn't run

I was stuck fast in the mud you see

so typical of me that is

wearing my hand-stitched leather shoes

and sinking deeply into the sticky abyss!

I knew I should have worn my wellies

but I thought it would have been drier

now the creature turned again to look at me

and he seemed to be getting higher!

Oh no! That's me! I am sinking fast

my new camera round my neck

what should I do; what would YOU do

Oh I know, we just HAVE to click … ; 0))

it's in our blood; even stuck in mud

so I tried hard to get my focus

but the hedge was too thick

as I began to click

and uttered “Hocus Pocus” (or words to that effect!! ; 0))

a little white magic won't be of any harm

I was excited to get some pics

I clicked away and mostly they ran away

but I got a couple as I unstuck my feet from the ditch

sitting back in the car; hair tangled; shoes all dirty

mud splashed up my jean-clad legs

I felt much calmer when I recognised a llama

looking back at me from my clean view finder

as you know my friends we save the camera first

and the rest of our things don't matter

my Parka was torn and I leant on the horn

which caused the rest of them to scatter

but I got this picture just to prove to you

that I am madder than The Mad Hatter!!!

(as if you didn't already know this … ; 0))

Happy Monday Everyone!! <3

Roseate Spoonbill ~ In The Wild

Tavernier, FL U.S.A. ~ Florida Keys

Winter Mating Colors ~ Dec 2017

*[Has a 'broken spoon' - upper & lower

spoon-tips are both slightly-damaged.

Are supposed to be completely-round]

*[Caught my eye: water-reflected on the under-side]

*[My own personal take on the Roseate Spoonbill: After moving to South Florida in the early 70's I was pleasantly surprised to find this beautiful bird living here. Yes, they are comical and awkward, but I have grown to love and appreciate them. They are special, even delicate and graceful, and superbly stunning in-flight! Fast flyer!]

(two more photos of 'this beautiful species' in the comments)

******************************************************************************

The Roseate Spoonbill is a wading bird of the ibis and spoonbill family. This species feeds in shallow fresh or coastal waters by swinging its bill from side to side as it steadily walks through the water, often in groups. The spoon-shaped bill allows it to sift easily through mud. It feeds on crustaceans, aquatic insects, frogs, newts and very small fish ignored by larger waders. The Roseate Spoonbill nests in shrubs or trees, often mangroves, laying 2 to 5 eggs, which are whitish with brown markings. Immature birds have white, feathered heads, and the pink of the plumage is paler. They are extremely agile high in the treetops. (They are often confused with the flamingo)

It is amazing that something so comical on land can be so graceful in the air - I love watching them seemingly float past.

I received some bad news yesterday - my brother has still been having falls since coming home from hospital after breaking his leg a while back. He has only just come home again after being in hospital over Easter with pneumonia after a fall where he was not found for a few hours and he had another fall yesterday and broke his leg again. He needs to go into full time care, but so far refuses to do so, but I think the time has come. It is such a worry for myself and my other brother as we live so far away.

A few weeks ago (the night of the Canada-US gold medal hockey) my wife, several friends, and I were in Calgary overnighting to take in the game in advance of ski trip to Kicking Horse and Revelstoke.

We used the Priceline iPhone app to book a room at the Marriott downtown for a comically low price, and the hotel happened to be across the street from the iconic Calgary Tower.

The day we had in Calgary was sunny and cloudless - perfect conditions for a cheesy hipstamatic shot of the tower - enjoy!

More fun with cropping to spotlight the comical cormorants.

I was inspired by by Sarah Schloo's gorgeous shoe shots, and thought Id have a bash in these shoes of mine.

Battery in my remote has konked out, so I had to keep climbing down to take another shot using the 10 second timer dash, quite comical in those things and nothing else!

Lampist Info: Single completely naff looking Phillips 'wake-up light' on full power to camera right.

Atlantic Puffin. They may look comical on land, but in reality they are tough little creatures, spending the whole winter out at sea.

Looking back through my photos from my holiday in the cold south earlier this year, I think this is one of the best photos I took.

We'd spent hours and hours on one of my fav beaches and this was taken as I was leaving - I turned around and took a last couple of shots, catching these people and their 2 gorgeous dogs who had been collecting driftwood.

Taken at Aramoana, Otago, NZ

I thought I would end this year on the funny side of life, this fun shot was taken this morning on one of my sunrise walks! Louize and I wish you all a fabulous NEW YEAR!!

These comical birds always put on a show while waiting for their daily "feed" at The Entrance in NSW..... this one's all about the eyes...

Coming in for a landing. They can take on some comical poses as they dump speed for landing.

A couple times a year when I go down to Plantation to the Doctors office, I try to take an hour or so to visit the Burrowing Owls in Hollywood. This time I only found one above ground keeping an eye out for any intruders. Even if I don't get many interesting shots I enjoy just watching these little guys. I often spend more time watching than photographing them.
