It was getting dark and I was shooting the 100-400 handheld but as I was heading back for a tripod, one last lightning blast lit up the sky. So while the full moonrise was obstructed by clouds, the lightshow still fully lived up to expectations at White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo, NM.
A decade ago, I never thought I would be,
At twenty-three,
on the verge of spontaneous combustion.
Woe-is-me.
But I guess that it comes with the territory,
An ominous landscape of never-ending calamity.
I need you to hear, I need you to see
That I have had all I can take and
Exploding seems like a definate possibility to me.
So pardon me while I burst into flames.
I've had enough of the world and its people's mindless games.
So pardon me while I burn
and rise above the flame.
Pardon me, pardon me...
I'll never be the same...

The Olympus Four-Thirds DSLRs have had a bit of retro-popularity lately, mostly due to the cachet of the Kodak CCD sensors. The Evolt E-500 is not as unique as the E-300 and lacks the IBIS of the E-510, but it's a fun camera to play with. And, for what it's worth, it shares the same Kodak sensor.

Lord Jack Archibald and Co are proud to present the Imperial Purgatorio Ranged Combustion Engine, a hand portable one-man operable mechanical igniting apparatus for the incineration of, but not limited to, opposing forces at optimal combat engagement parameters.
It has long been an emphatically and adamantly held conviction of individuals employed under or inderectly by Lord Jack Archibald and Co that war has the most certain potential to be the utmost tragic and terrifying singular event that can devastate the life of the common man, and thus ought to be most passionately avoided with stern courageous political pressure and negotiation in order to avert such a monstrosity from befalling a civilized entity. It has also been emphatically and adamantly held by these very same mortal beings that when this enormously proportioned entity that is war inevitably overcomes the charismatic imploring of gentlemen entrenched against it, that then this war must, of course, be done far better by one's own people then by the others.
So, for this most noble and worthy cause of invoking war in a manner vastly superior to one's adversely aligned antagonists, Lord Jack Archibald and Co have leaned their shoulders to the plow and masterfully forged this piece of legendary equipment for the arming of all valiant heroes who bravely fill the sturdy boots of a soldier.

.. ist das das Ende!? 😕
The EU wants to ban the sale of cars with combustion engines from 2035. VW has committed itself to this goal; in Europe the company wants to exit the combustion vehicle business between 2033 and 2035 and only build battery-electric vehicles.
The flames of combustion. Colors just remind me of fire. My brother-in-law is in the Navy on deployment and since 97 is his lucky number (this is my 97th upload) I send out a "Yut!" to him.

It was a super fun conclusion to our evening of fun light painting. I moved down on to the rocks and spun the whisk of super mega sparkages and created a pandemonium of combustion
Actually, this is an accident. I never thought that I'd finish uploading this because I used to hate it. It is an outtake of the day 26 which I labeled as a failure. But I didn't delete it. I had a new photo in mind, but first I wanted to know if I could create some not-too-fake looking flames with Photoshop and started to experiment. I could go on editing it endlessly, but I have been looking at it too much time: after more than six hours of work, this is the result and it's staying. What do you say? Realistic enough?
I suppose I'll take the other photo anyway, so maybe you will see more flames in my photostream soon.
It was slightly inspired by “Make me wanna die” (The Pretty Reckless) when they sing “I'm burning in the light”. I couldn't believe it when I knew that she's the same little girl from the Grinch :O Taylor Momsen changed so much! But I like her music style (much better than Hannah Montana and similar) and her voice. She doesn't sound like a 17 years old at all.
Days pass and I feel more and more unsure about everything. If I don't stop (I wish I could!) to rack my brains what is going to suffer a spontaneous combustion is my head....

At the heart of future rocket engines lifting off to the Moon or Mars could be a 3D printed combustion chamber. Multiple NASA centers partnered with Virgin Orbit to develop and test a uniquely manufactured rocket part.
Virgin Orbit air launches rockets carrying small satellites to space. The company partnered with NASA experts in combustion and additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama; Glenn Research Center in Cleveland; and Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. Their goal: to create a 3D printed combustion chamber that combines multiple materials and takes advantage of cutting-edge manufacturing processes.

Limestone is used in most coal-fired power plants to help capture sulfur released during the combustion process, hence reducing air pollution.
This requires huge amounts of limestone, which usually gets moved by trains. The most well-known such service amongst railfans is the Slovakian Ekocell Express, which came to an end together with 2023: the last two blocks of the Nováky power plant got closed as part of their coal phase out strategy.
But not to worry, in Hungary the Felnémet–Visonta limestone service still runs daily, with classic 6 axled Ganz-MÁVAG traction!
This is the result of my third attempt at creating this particular image. I knew what I wanted to accomplish but the first two attempts weren't satisfactory for various reasons.
The image you see here is the result of three separate processes.
Step 1: Firstly I captured the spark plug (which is from a radio-controlled airplane and so is significantly smaller than a regular plug) and its reflection. This step required 15 separate images to be taken in a focus stack of the spark plug placed on a mirror with a black background. I then combined these 15 images in the awesome Helicon Soft Helicon Focus software. If any of you have yet to try this piece of software I positively encourage you to download the 30 day trial - it's incredible.
Step 2: I then re-focussed on the lettering of the plug, doused the mirror in methylated spirit and set light to it - taking another image and then blowing out the flames before they set light to my black background or anything else! Mrs R was out of the house when I did this bit!
Step 3: I photographed the spark from the gas hob igniter using the same macro lens.
I combined the image from Step 1 and Step 2 in Photoshop and used a layer mask to bring the deep focussed plug out from the flames. I then took the spark image and used the free transform feature of PS to manipulate it to be in the correct place, size and orientation for the reflected part of the spark plug.
The resulting compound image was then cropped, saturation of the blue flames boosted and other minor tweaks using Lightroom and Color Efex Pro.
The final image is pretty close to what I'd envisioned - I hope you like the result.
