A Beautiful weekend Along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway in Baker County Oregon.

 

Enjoyed a beautiful weekend along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway between the towns of Baker City and Halfway, enjoying the first hint of fall in the Wallowa Mountains along the way including a stop at the Halfway Farmers Market, and some time exploring the towns of halfway and Richland, and surrounding century farms.

 

The Hells Canyon Scenic Byway is a loop that encircles the Wallowa Mountains, intersecting with Interstate 84 at Baker City and La Grande. During the fall the byway is an ideal route for exploring the regions fall foliage and autumn splendor with some great wildlife viewing opportunities along the way.

 

The byway is a popular destination for group tours and offers visitors a chance to experience small town Americana in small towns like Halfway, as they explore the rugged and spectacular Northeast Oregon landscape along the way.

 

Hwy 86 between Baker City and the Hells Canyon Dam at the bottom of the canyon is open year round providing visitors access to the deepest river gorge in North America.

Years ago, a friend told me a story from her childhood that I'd not heard before, and I think of it often. The story goes like this:

 

One morning, a little girl was looking across the valley from her house, admiring the beautiful golden windows on a house on the top of the hill.

 

"Mom," she said, "Do you see that house on the hill with golden windows? It must be so beautiful there, and the people who live there must be so wealthy! I'll bet they have no problems and their lives are filled with happiness every day. I wish OUR HOUSE had golden windows."

 

"Oh, darling," replied the mother, "no one's life is perfect. Even people who live in a house with golden windows."

 

"No, I think you are wrong! I want to go see for myself!" So the mother packed the daughter a lunch, and away the daughter went to cross the valley and see how wonderful life was for the people who lived in the house with golden windows.

 

The girl walked all day long. As she reached the bottom of the valley, she lost sight of the house but kept going. It was dusk by the time she reached the top of the other hill. But to her surprise, all she found was an ordinary house. She saw no golden ornaments, nothing that made the house look different or more special than any other house. The people looked ordinary, just like the people in her own family. She was puzzled.

 

Disappointed, she turned around to gaze at her own house across the valley she'd just crossed. And to her surprise, her house was ablaze with light. The windows shone with gold as the setting sun lit them up. In disbelief, she looked again at the ordinary house in front of her, then back to her house gleaming across the way.

 

"MY house has golden windows!" she said in amazement. She stood for a moment, struck by how beautiful her house looked from this side of the valley. She took off running back down the hill, eager to return to her family.

BACKSTORY: Well, that was a crazy burn! So much shit I never expected to do, at WickerMan Burn 2016!

 

- Damaged Carolyn's car on the way in so that it permanently squeaks, except it got better by the time we left

 

- Ate a tequila worm (so much more chewing than you would imagine!) when naked-goddess-bartender poured me one, randomly. (I had to check that it wasn't something from the woods)

 

- Watched fireworks so dangerously close that I needed first aid for a burned eyeball (could this be why the vision in that eye went bad this year?)

 

- Learned to weave. On a loom. And wove some. Took video of weaving.

 

- worried about this spleen issue I have that is starting to feel less like a pain, and more like an actual tumor that you can distinctly feel on one side (still hurting as of 2017, CT Scan found nothing)

 

- controlled huge flamethrowers with laserbeams & buttons

 

- fun stuff on top of a 20-ft wooden ziggurat art installation (Carolyn was too scared to go up!)

 

- Watched a firework fireball zoom past Carolyn's head (she didn't even flinch) and catch the ground on fire 1 foot from her feet

 

- Made out with both members of a couple (beards can be soft?)

 

- Bounced in a moon bounce

 

- Saw Carolyn fall off a bounce-house ramp, tumbling in mid air, as onlookers screamed (one massage later, she's fine)

 

- Played with propane bubbles (cover hand, stick in fire, watch self burn) with zero regard for my safety or even knowing what they were ("other people aren't dying when they do this, so i'll do this, whatever this is. no, i won't ask anybody any questions about it or learn anything safety-related")

 

- Treated 2nd degree cooking burn with actual aloe leaves someone bundled up, just in case. Only had to walk 20 feet from my camp! No relation to previous bullet point.

 

- Tried [REDACTED]

 

- Used logical deduction to guide a damsel in distress to her campsite that she could not find, even though I had never been there. (If you want to flatter me, make me feel like Aragorn. I also accept pints of cherry tomatoes & great conversation)

 

- Received tons of compliments about my hair & badass cartoon shirt (and about my brain) (but I get that a lot... it's the others I'm not so used to)

 

- Worried about Andrea in rehab. Did all kinds of crazy things to maintain connectivity to check up on her. A lotta good that did. RIP, Andrea.

 

- Learned to always great one specific person with "Hi, Clint!" (Her name is not Clint. This is how she prefers greetings.)

 

- Wore My Little Pony boxer-briefs around strangers

 

- Sent video from the middle of the woods with a phone that only works when plugged in (tricky)

 

- Met the creator of games I've played for 15 yrs, & found out that the vintage set of game pieces my aunt found me in a thrift store are so rare that he was re-telling people about our set... Even when we weren't even there. So honored! To tell the man who invented Fluxx that you had the original Fluxx back when that was the only Fluxx you could get was awesome, too.

 

- But to make a reference to a specific episode of 2 Stupid Dogs to the creator of Fluxx, and have him know it and repeat it back... Wow.

 

- Chastised by Channy for not knowing how to spell my own name on facebook, becuase she wanted pictoral proof of my story that did not believe -- that the deer shit that came out of the deer when my Bonneville was totalled (while driving back from Dirk's) had splattered onto my car in the shape of Pluto the Dog's face. I totally sent her that picture!

 

- Lost 1 of 2 cameras, resulting in our pictures being quite incomplete (gee, real Burnery of whoever found it to not bother giving it back. If I find someone else's camera, I guess this means I'll have to keep it to break even?)

 

- Learned I can consistently inhale an entire nitrous oxide cartridge in one lungful

 

- Randomly given 2 beers by someone, only to ask to see her face, and, after introductions, us all realizing we already know each other already and are FB friends already (wtf?! what are the odds?!)

 

Saw a truck covered in fire driving down the mountain like nothing was going on. Overheard: "Are youseeing that? Is that real?"

 

Phew? Did I get everything? I don't know! One night, I never saw my camp during the night time, at all.

UPDATE: Mystery solved... Apparently when Flickr hiccuped, my images became "locked" from search engines... Flickr fixed the problem--thanks dudes and dudettes!

 

I haven't talked about it much, but because I understand how search engines work, I have used my titles, text, and tags to maximize the chance of my images being found on Flickr and other search engines. As you can see from the upper left screenshot, I was averaging 2500 visits/day. Only 150 of these were due to contacts; the rest were from search engine finds.

 

That panel also shows a significant decrease in my views/day occurring in August 22, down below 1000. That's over a 50% drop.

 

As I've posted about this, people have said, basically, I don't know what I'm talking about. My guess was outside search engines and spammers were being blocked, and some agreed.

 

But the upper right panel shows one of my better days before the change, and you can see that Flickr is the referrer for most of the visits.

 

The lower two panels show further evidence that there was a change specifically in Flickr's search engine. My Bowl of Clouds pic has over 30,000 views, and you can see it went from 25-100 views per day to almost nothing. The right panel shows also most of the references were from Flickr.

 

Now why does this pic make me believe there was a change in the search engine? Well, this is a good pic, but not even in the top 10 of my cloudshots... It's because of the title. it turns out there is a toy doll set called "Blythe Cloud Nine Bowl", and as people searched for it, people found my shot and viewed it. Now when I do the same search words, this pic isn't showing up.

 

So, my guess is, Flickr changed their search engine algorithm on Aug 22. The other two explanations... Flick's hiccups have somehow impacted the search process... or somehow the search engine is penalizing me for uploading a large number of pics this month. I uploaded about 200 pics from Comic Con around that same date, can't see how that could make such a big difference but you never know with black boxes...

Mr. Black is the author of IBM and the Holocaust and the just released War Against the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race, from which the following article is drawn.

 

Hitler and his henchmen victimized an entire continent and exterminated millions in his quest for a co-called "Master Race."

 

But the concept of a white, blond-haired, blue-eyed master Nordic race didn't originate with Hitler. The idea was created in the United States, and cultivated in California, decades before Hitler came to power. California eugenicists played an important, although little known, role in the American eugenics movement's campaign for ethnic cleansing.

 

Eugenics was the racist pseudoscience determined to wipe away all human beings deemed "unfit," preserving only those who conformed to a Nordic stereotype. Elements of the philosophy were enshrined as national policy by forced sterilization and segregation laws, as well as marriage restrictions, enacted in twenty-seven states. In 1909, California became the third state to adopt such laws. Ultimately, eugenics practitioners coercively sterilized some 60,000 Americans, barred the marriage of thousands, forcibly segregated thousands in "colonies," and persecuted untold numbers in ways we are just learning. Before World War II, nearly half of coercive sterilizations were done in California, and even after the war, the state accounted for a third of all such surgeries.

 

California was considered an epicenter of the American eugenics movement. During the Twentieth Century's first decades, California's eugenicists included potent but little known race scientists, such as Army venereal disease specialist Dr. Paul Popenoe, citrus magnate and Polytechnic benefactor Paul Gosney, Sacramento banker Charles M. Goethe, as well as members of the California State Board of Charities and Corrections and the University of California Board of Regents.

 

Eugenics would have been so much bizarre parlor talk had it not been for extensive financing by corporate philanthropies, specifically the Carnegie Institution, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Harriman railroad fortune. They were all in league with some of America's most respected scientists hailing from such prestigious universities as Stamford, Yale, Harvard, and Princeton. These academicians espoused race theory and race science, and then faked and twisted data to serve eugenics' racist aims.

 

Stanford president David Starr Jordan originated the notion of "race and blood" in his 1902 racial epistle "Blood of a Nation," in which the university scholar declared that human qualities and conditions such as talent and poverty were passed through the blood.

 

In 1904, the Carnegie Institution established a laboratory complex at Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island that stockpiled millions of index cards on ordinary Americans, as researchers carefully plotted the removal of families, bloodlines and whole peoples. From Cold Spring Harbor, eugenics advocates agitated in the legislatures of America, as well as the nation's social service agencies and associations.

 

The Harriman railroad fortune paid local charities, such as the New York Bureau of Industries and Immigration, to seek out Jewish, Italian and other immigrants in New York and other crowded cities and subject them to deportation, trumped up confinement or forced sterilization.

 

The Rockefeller Foundation helped found the German eugenics program and even funded the program that Josef Mengele worked in before he went to Auschwitz.

 

Much of the spiritual guidance and political agitation for the American eugenics movement came from California's quasi-autonomous eugenic societies, such as the Pasadena-based Human Betterment Foundation and the California branch of the American Eugenics Society, which coordinated much of their activity with the Eugenics Research Society in Long Island. These organizations--which functioned as part of a closely-knit network--published racist eugenic newsletters and pseudoscientific journals, such as Eugenical News and Eugenics, and propagandized for the Nazis.

 

Eugenics was born as a scientific curiosity in the Victorian age. In 1863, Sir Francis Galton, a cousin of Charles Darwin, theorized that if talented people only married other talented people, the result would be measurably better offspring. At the turn of the last century, Galton's ideas were imported into the United States just as Gregor Mendel's principles of heredity were rediscovered. American eugenic advocates believed with religious fervor that the same Mendelian concepts determining the color and size of peas, corn and cattle also governed the social and intellectual character of man.

 

In an America demographically reeling from immigration upheaval and torn by post-Reconstruction chaos, race conflict was everywhere in the early twentieth century. Elitists, utopians and so-called "progressives" fused their smoldering race fears and class bias with their desire to make a better world. They reinvented Galton's eugenics into a repressive and racist ideology. The intent: populate the earth with vastly more of their own socio-economic and biological kind--and less or none of everyone else.

 

The superior species the eugenics movement sought was populated not merely by tall, strong, talented people. Eugenicists craved blond, blue-eyed Nordic types. This group alone, they believed, was fit to inherit the earth. In the process, the movement intended to subtract emancipated Negroes, immigrant Asian laborers, Indians, Hispanics, East Europeans, Jews, dark-haired hill folk, poor people, the infirm and really anyone classified outside the gentrified genetic lines drawn up by American raceologists.

 

How? By identifying so-called "defective" family trees and subjecting them to lifelong segregation and sterilization programs to kill their bloodlines. The grand plan was to literally wipe away the reproductive capability of those deemed weak and inferior--the so-called "unfit." The eugenicists hoped to neutralize the viability of 10 percent of the population at a sweep, until none were left except themselves.

 

Eighteen solutions were explored in a Carnegie-supported 1911 "Preliminary Report of the Committee of the Eugenic Section of the American Breeder's Association to Study and to Report on the Best Practical Means for Cutting Off the Defective Germ-Plasm in the Human Population." Point eight was euthanasia.

 

The most commonly suggested method of eugenicide in America was a "lethal chamber" or public locally operated gas chambers. In 1918, Popenoe, the Army venereal disease specialist during World War I, co-wrote the widely used textbook, Applied Eugenics, which argued, "From an historical point of view, the first method which presents itself is execution… Its value in keeping up the standard of the race should not be underestimated." Applied Eugenics also devoted a chapter to "Lethal Selection," which operated "through the destruction of the individual by some adverse feature of the environment, such as excessive cold, or bacteria, or by bodily deficiency."

 

Eugenic breeders believed American society was not ready to implement an organized lethal solution. But many mental institutions and doctors practiced improvised medical lethality and passive euthanasia on their own. One institution in Lincoln, Illinois fed its incoming patients milk from tubercular cows believing a eugenically strong individual would be immune. Thirty to forty percent annual death rates resulted at Lincoln. Some doctors practiced passive eugenicide one newborn infant at a time. Others doctors at mental institutions engaged in lethal neglect.

 

Nonetheless, with eugenicide marginalized, the main solution for eugenicists was the rapid expansion of forced segregation and sterilization, as well as more marriage restrictions. California led the nation, performing nearly all sterilization procedures with little or no due process. In its first twenty-five years of eugenic legislation, California sterilized 9,782 individuals, mostly women. Many were classified as "bad girls," diagnosed as "passionate," "oversexed" or "sexually wayward." At Sonoma, some women were sterilized because of what was deemed an abnormally large clitoris or labia.

 

In 1933 alone, at least 1,278 coercive sterilizations were performed, 700 of which were on women. The state's two leading sterilization mills in 1933 were Sonoma State Home with 388 operations and Patton State Hospital with 363 operations. Other sterilization centers included Agnews, Mendocino, Napa, Norwalk, Stockton and Pacific Colony state hospitals.

 

Even the United States Supreme Court endorsed aspects of eugenics. In its infamous 1927 decision, Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote, "It is better for all the world, if instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind…. Three generations of imbeciles are enough." This decision opened the floodgates for thousands to be coercively sterilized or otherwise persecuted as subhuman. Years later, the Nazis at the Nuremberg trials quoted Holmes's words in their own defense.

 

Only after eugenics became entrenched in the United States was the campaign transplanted into Germany, in no small measure through the efforts of California eugenicists, who published booklets idealizing sterilization and circulated them to German official and scientists.

 

Hitler studied American eugenics laws. He tried to legitimize his anti-Semitism by medicalizing it, and wrapping it in the more palatable pseudoscientific facade of eugenics. Hitler was able to recruit more followers among reasonable Germans by claiming that science was on his side. While Hitler's race hatred sprung from his own mind, the intellectual outlines of the eugenics Hitler adopted in 1924 were made in America.

 

During the '20s, Carnegie Institution eugenic scientists cultivated deep personal and professional relationships with Germany's fascist eugenicists. In Mein Kampf, published in 1924, Hitler quoted American eugenic ideology and openly displayed a thorough knowledge of American eugenics. "There is today one state," wrote Hitler, "in which at least weak beginnings toward a better conception [of immigration] are noticeable. Of course, it is not our model German Republic, but the United States."

 

Hitler proudly told his comrades just how closely he followed the progress of the American eugenics movement. "I have studied with great interest," he told a fellow Nazi, "the laws of several American states concerning prevention of reproduction by people whose progeny would, in all probability, be of no value or be injurious to the racial stock."

 

Hitler even wrote a fan letter to American eugenic leader Madison Grant calling his race-based eugenics book, The Passing of the Great Race his "bible."

 

Hitler's struggle for a superior race would be a mad crusade for a Master Race. Now, the American term "Nordic" was freely exchanged with "Germanic" or "Aryan." Race science, racial purity and racial dominance became the driving force behind Hitler's Nazism. Nazi eugenics would ultimately dictate who would be persecuted in a Reich-dominated Europe, how people would live, and how they would die. Nazi doctors would become the unseen generals in Hitler's war against the Jews and other Europeans deemed inferior. Doctors would create the science, devise the eugenic formulas, and even hand-select the victims for sterilization, euthanasia and mass extermination."

Es tracta d'un antic monestir, avui església parroquial, que va centrar el nucli urbà crescut al seu redós i que porta el mateix nom. Del conjunt destaca l'església, situada al nord; .

El Servei de Monuments de la Diputació va efectuar treballs de restauració a partir de 1971 dels que no queda gaire constància tret d'una breu memòria i els records orals i escrits dels veïns i estudiosos, especialment, de Mn. Margarit. Sembla que es van excavar en un cantó del claustre dues grans sitges que es van classificar com a medievals. No se sap els tipus de materials, però s'indica que hi havia també tegulae. En notícies de la dècada de 1960 s'indica que s'hi havien fet excavacions i que hi havien aparegut les restes d'un gran edifici romà, sense més precisió (RIBÉ et al.; 1989-1998). Sembla que es pot precisar que una de les sitges va aparèixer al peu de la sortida de la sagristia. Dies la descriu com de "dimensions considerables" i revestida amb "pedres amb morter". Dona referències, així mateix, d'un dipòsit revestit de pedra tallada. Sota l'ala de ponent va aparèixer una tomba amb escasses restes humanes, que s'introduïa sota els fonaments de la casa contigua (DIES PALAU, 1971).

 

Observacions: (Continuació història) La dotació essencial del monestir estava formada per les terres que l'envoltaven, per la parròquia de Sant Pau d'Ordal i per altres alous escampats per tot el Penedès. A més, el monestir era propietari d'altres béns dispersos, entre el quals caldria destacar la Parellada dels Pòdols, sota el camí que anava del priorat a la Granada, els masos de Malselliga (les Gunyoles), un mas a Avinyonet i altres masos i alous per tot el Penedès, especialment als castells de Subirats i Santmartí. A finals del segle XII o començament del XIII es va realitzar l'ala de llevant del claustre, hipotèticament la de migdia (de la qual avui no en resta cap vestigi) i el portal romànic actual, a instàncies dels monjos marsellesos. Aquest portal romànic estava en una posició més avançada, en la mateixa línia que l'actual porta oest del claustre. Segurament llavors s'aixecaren una sèrie de dependències monacals entorn del claustre. El 1373 un terratrèmol afecta bona part del monestir. Potser que l'edifici patís danys, ja que en 1380 en una visita pastoral es palesa l'estat d'enrunament de l'absis i el campanar. Entre 1388 i 1450, més o menys, es duen a terme obres que consisteixen en refer els trespols del campanar, bastir l'absis actual amb volta de creueria subjectada per una clau -amb un Sant Martí voltat de sagetes, o sia, reconvertit en Sant Sebastià- i una coberta plana que desguassa per les gàrgoles dels contraforts de la seva part de llevant. A partir del segle XIV el monestir va patir una degradació constant que tampoc no es va acabar amb la seva incorporació a l'abadia de Montserrat el 1409, entrant poc desprès en una total decadència, fins a desaparèixer de l'interior de les seves dependències tot rastre de vida comunitària. Així, les rendes que mantenien els tres o quatre monjos que encara subsistien passaren a ser percebudes per l'abadia matriu. Sant Sebastià va esdevenir un simple centre d'administració de diverses propietats de Montserrat, però menat per un prior. Des del segle XIV i durant els segles XV i XVI, les edificacions del monestir van patir un deteriorament molt gran, tot i les obres realitzades a la capçalera de l'església durant el segle XIV. D'aquesta manera, tot el conjunt va acabar en estat ruïnós, tal com expliquen les visites pastorals del segle XVI. Les últimes reformes importants documentades són de l'any 1606, en època del pare Jaume Forner, abat de Montserrat. Aquestes obres es van centrar fonamentalment en el trasllat del portal romànic a l'emplaçament actual, que comporta l'escurçament de la nau per la banda de ponent; l'obertura d'un òcul sobre el portal; potser la realització de la volta escarzera i el paviment de la nau; probablement, la construcció de la capella del Roser, al mur nord de l'església; una nova coberta per al campanar i segurament també l'enteixinat de guix situat sota el seu últim trespol; i l'engrandiment de l'edifici prioral per ponent. Ja en aquells anys, i fins a l'exclaustració, Sant Sebastià havia esdevingut una simple propietat que els priors arrendaven a pagesos de la comarca. L'any 1785, el prior Agustí Bragado obre els sarcòfags de la planta baixa del campanar i en un d'ells grava el seu nom. Segurament és l'època en què s'aixeca el cor. La desaparició definitiva del priorat es va produir entre el 1821 (exclaustració i subhasta, passant a mans de particulars) i el 1835, any aquest en què es produeix la definitiva secularització. Tot i el parèntesi de l'últim període de govern de Ferran VII, els antics propietaris, Jaume Hugas i Josep Faiges, recuperaven la finca el 1835, excepte l'església, que va passar a ser considerada un annex de la parròquia d'Avinyonet i, a partir del 1851, parròquia independent" (PLADEVALL-LLORACH, 1992: 79-82).

 

El topònim del lloc de Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs apareix des del segle X, mentre que la fundació del monestir de Sant Sebastià data del segle XI. El nom té l'origen en la riera del mateix nom que transcorre prop del cenobi, i que encara presenta diversos gorgs al seu recorregut. Hipotèticament ja sembla existir una església pre-romànica, de planta rectangular i amb coberta a dues aigües suportada per encavallades de fusta, que seria l'edifici fundacional del posterior monestir de Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs. La notícia més antiga coneguda en que es menciona aquest enclau religiós és de l'any 1024, quan es lleguen a aquesta església unes terres situades al terme d'Eramprunyà. Tanmateix, el primer document escrit en que es fa menció del topònim es troba al Cartulari de Sant Cugat del Vallès (núm. 112). Es tracta d'una delimitació de terres cedides a Sant Cugat, datat el 15 de gener de l'any 976 (JUNQUERAS, ESCAYOL, 2001: 1): "de orientis in ipsos gorgos, de meridie in villa de Lobos" . Existia, doncs, hipotèticament ja al segle XI, una església pre-romànica, de planta rectangular i amb coberta a dues aigües, suportada per encavallades de fusta, que seria l'edifici fundacional del posterior monestir. Un testimoni de gran interès, que dona a conèixer l'inici de la vida monàstica, és el testament d'Ermengarda, filla del comte Borrell II de Barcelona i mare de Mir Geribert, dictat el 1030. En ell, Ermengarda dona a Sant Sebastià les vinyes que tenia als Gorgs i altres propietats menys importants. Així mateix, va ordenar vendre els seus cavalls, pollins, muls, porcs i espets de pa. També deixà a l'església de Sant Sebastià sis vaques més i la meitat de l'alou de Ventallós. La clàusula més rellevant d'aquest testament és aquella en la qual Ermengarda disposà que s'establissin a Sant Sebastià quatre monjos que, conjuntament amb els clergues que hi visquessin, tenien l'obligació de celebrar missa cada dia i resar matines i vespres, pregant per la salvació de la seva ànima.

L'encarregat de tirar endavant les darreres disposicions d'Ermengarda va ser el seu fill, Mir Geribert, que es pot considerar el fundador del monestir. El "príncep d'Olèrdola", com es conegut aquest personatge es va ocupar de la dotació del cenobi, que esdevingué el monestir familiar on ell i els seus descendents havien de ser enterrats. És significatiu en aquest sentit el testament sacramental de Mir Geribert del 1060, jurat precisament sobre l'altar de Sant Martí de l'església de Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs. Es desconeix la data exacta de la consagració de la primera església i del començament de la vida comunitària, però en tot cas el cenobi ja funcionava el 1043 quan l'abat Miró i la resta de monjos van vendre a Geribert i a la seva esposa una parellada de terra al terme d'Olèrdola. Un dels signants d'aquesta carta de compra-venda és el mateix Mir Geribert. En poc temps Sant Sebastià va esdevenir el principal monestir del Penedès i de les comarques veïnes de l'Anoia i del Baix Llobregat. Aquest inici independent i brillant no va reeixir, ja que, des del 1052, Sant Sebastià esdevingué un priorat, mesura portada a terme pel mateix Mir Geribert i la seva esposa Guisla, qui per tal d'assegurar la tutoria d'una abadia famosa i evitar les usurpacions de béns, va decidir la unió del petit cenobi amb Sant Víctor de Marsella, centre d'irradiació de la reforma gregoriana. L'any 1059 es produeix la unió definitiva, quan Geribert firmà un pacte amb l'abat de Sant Víctor de Marsella, pel qual des d'aquell moment els monjos provençals posseirien el priorat, tot observant la regla de Sant Benet. En el document es deixava clar que Sant Sebastià restaria per sempre més sota la protecció de la família de Mir Geribert, els Santmartí.

I know that I met this amazing, funny, sweet person, and I'm completely wild over her. That I've had her in every minute of my life for the last week, and that every minute felt right. And that tomorrow everything changes.

I really can't say. I wish I knew. Really, we're taking it minute by minute and sometimes it feels like we're spinning out of control.

 

We say our strange goodbyes and go back to phonecalls and webcams - the technologies that once seemed fresh and exciting are a step backward; a step apart. It's going to be hard. I know that much.

 

I'm hoping a California trip is in the cards.
