Looking very frightened, just hope it made it. FYI - I've seen more adult pairs since this shot was taken.

An attractive small toucan of tropical lowland forest and edge. Usually found in small groups moving through the canopy of fruiting trees or seen flying, one at a time, across clearings and between trees. Flight rather direct and fast, when long-tailed and long-billed shape is distinctive. Note the yellow body with red and black markings, and the serrated pattern on the big bill.

Did you know that the Collared Dove was only introduced into Britain in 1955, in Norfolk. Now they are across the UK and very common. We certainly get plenty here, the dark assassin has dispatched at least one of them that we know of. They are also monogamous, so there you go.

The collared kingfisher is a medium-sized kingfisher, the tree kingfishers. It is also known as the white-collared kingfisher, black-masked kingfisher or mangrove kingfisher.

It has a variety of calls which vary geographically. The most typical call is a loud, harsh and metallic "kee-kee-kee" repeated several times.

It is most commonly found in coastal areas, particularly in mangrove swamps. It also inhabits farmland, open woodland, grassland and gardens. In some parts of its range, especially on islands, it can be seen further inland, ranging into forest or into mountain areas. Birds often perch conspicuously on wires, rocks or bare branches.

Small crabs and shrimps are the favoured food in coastal regions but a wide variety of other animals are eaten including insects (including beetles, cicadas, stick-insects, grasshoppers, moths and butterflies), spiders, earthworms, snails, frogs, lizards, small snakes, small fish, and sometimes small birds and mice. The collared kingfisher perches almost motionless for long periods waiting for prey. When it spots something it glides down to catch it and then flies back to the perch where larger items are pounded against the branch to subdue them.

The nest is a hole, either a natural tree hole or a burrow excavated by the birds themselves in a rotten tree, arboreal termite nest or earth bank. They will also occupy old woodpecker holes. A clutch of usually two to five rounded, whitish eggs are laid directly on the floor of the burrow with no nest material used. Both parents take part in incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks. The young birds leave the nest about 44 days after hatching. Two broods are often raised in a year.

With a very wide distribution and common to abundant population, the collared kingfisher is classed as least concern on the IUCN Red List.

collared owlet, also known as the collared pygmy owl, is a species of owl in the family Strigidae. Its natural habitat is submontane and montane forests with open spaces and is distributed throughout oriental Asia. It is the smallest owl in Asia, at 15 cm and 60 g.

Collared earthstar (Geastrum triplex). I spotted these today, never found them before. Glad I changed my route. Yes I did the same as most people I went home and got some water to drop onto the fungus to get it to smoke. difficult shot as I had to feed the camera through some railings and then line up the water without getting the camera wet.

A collared dove posing nicely in a pine tree in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. If only the azure-winged magpies could be so obliging!

The Collared Earthstar (Geastrum triplex), also known as Saucered Earthstar and Triple Earthstar, is found in Asia, Australasia, Europe, and both North and South America. It is an inedible fungus but has a history of use in traditional medicines of native North America and China.

Immature fruit bodies are spherical and are partially or completely buried in the ground. As the fungus matures, the outer layer of tissue splits into four to eight pointed segments that spread outwards and downwards, lifting and exposing the spherical inner spore sac.

In Britain and Ireland, Collared Earthstars can be found from mid-summer to winter and often into the following spring although it is an infrequent and rather localised species. They are most often found in the detritus and leaf litter of deciduous woodland. This, along with their bland colour, makes them difficult to spot, but once found, there are likely to be more hidden under leaves nearby.

Rainbow lorikeets are true parrots, within the Psittacoidea superfamily in the order Psittaciformes. The rainbow lorikeet or lorikeet (common name) is a species of parrot found in Australia. It is common along the eastern seaboard, from northern Queensland to South Australia. Its habitat is rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas. They are true parrots of medium-size, with the length ranging from 25 to 30 cm, including the tail. The weight varies from 75 to 157 g. The plumage of the nominate race, as with all subspecies, is very bright. The head is deep blue with a greenish-yellow nuchal collar, and the rest of the upper parts (wings, back and tail) are green. The chest is orange/yellow. The belly is deep blue, and the thighs and rump are green. In flight a yellow wing-bar contrasts clearly with the red underwing coverts.

Gordonia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Theaceae, related to Franklinia, Camellia and Stewartia. Of the roughly 40 species, all but two are native to southeast Asia in southern China, Taiwan and Indochina. They are evergreen trees, growing to 10–20 m tall. The bark is thick and deeply fissured. The leaves are alternately arranged, simple, serrated, thick, leathery, glossy, and 6–18 cm long. The flowers are large and conspicuous, 4–15 cm diameter, with 5 (occasionally 6-8) white petals; flowering is in late winter or early spring. The species are adapted to acidic soils, and do not grow well on chalk or other calcium-rich soils. They also have a high rainfall requirement and will not tolerate drought. 35143

Collared dwarf gecko (Sphaerodactylus glaucus)

This cute little lizard dropped onto my shoulder when I was investigating an old abandoned house in the jungle for birds.

I cropped this pretty significantly. I was in a pretty big hurry at the time because it was getting darker and I wanted to try to find an owl and get some shots in a cave before it got any darker. So the best shots I got were in hand and I usually don't like to post those kind but I might anyway.

There's often a collared dove or two perched on this particular branch at my local park. They're common as muck around our way, but they are quite photogenic and with the sun behind the trees you can get a nice out of focus background too.
