A beautiful Cold War-era Boeing KC-97G Stratofreighter aerial refueling tanker on display at Pima Air & Space Museum near Tucson, Arizona
The iconic Flanker roaring into the sky with two incandescent trails of fire behind it for its evening display during Bucharest International Air Show 2016.
It was about time for a fast jet after so many props on my photostream, don't you think?

Something to set [https://www.flickr.com/photos/grim_git] lip a-quiver with thoughts of what might have been. 😢
Yesterday I went to Wellesbourne Mountfield airfield to take part in the threshold aero shoot with Avro Vulcan XM655. This picture was worth the entry fee alone but the spectacle was the engine run of the Vulcan

A Polish propaganda postcard from 1951, from "Cold War" days..
I recently won that card on the internet auction... an interesting piece of our European history.
I just had to have it. ;-) .. a pure "relic" from the days when Europe was divided in two... somewhat like today ;-)

The Bedford Green Goddess, officially the Bedford RLHZ Self Propelled Pump, is a historic fire engine like vehicle built by Bedford Vehicles in the UK between 1953 and 1956. Designed primarily for the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS), it was intended to support civil defense efforts, particularly in the event of a nuclear attack, by pumping large volumes of water from natural sources like rivers or lakes to supply cities. Its iconic green paint and Cold War-era origins have made it a cultural symbol in Britain, often associated with the 1977 and 2002 firefighters’ strikes when it was operated by the British Armed Forces.
Roaring overhead during the sunset display, the MiG driver has just engaged reheat and the afterburner flame is starting to spew from the jetpipe. You can take a look inside the afterburner of the Tumanski R-13-300 turbojet engine! What a shape, what a sight, what a sound, what a feeling...

Avro Vulcan B Mk 2 XM603 was completed at Woodford on 15th November 1963, fitted with Bristol Siddeley Olympus 301 engines. She first flew in the all white anti-flash paint scheme used for the high altitude role that the Vulcan was originally designed for.
Delivered the same month to No. 12 Sqn, then part of the Coningsby Wing which moved, shortly afterwards, to Cottesmore in 1964. XM603 then transferred to the Waddington Wing in 1968, joined 50 Sqn in August 1975 followed by 101 Sqn in December 1980 & then 44 Sqn. in July 1981. By this time the paint scheme had changed to the Grey/Green camouflage used in the low level role which the Vulcan was now used for.
She travelled extensively to British and American bases round the World before being retired by the RAF in 1982 as part of the general removal of Vulcans from service, just missing the Falklands conflict.
XM603 was sold to British Aerospace (as was) for preservation at Woodford. She arrived there on 12th March 1982 flown by Charles Masefield – now Sir Charles Masefield.
She was used as the trial mock up aircraft for the Vulcan K.Mk 2 tanker conversion. Vulcans were used for air to air refuelling in Europe allowing the Victors to be used in the South Atlantic. A number of items were also removed to support operational Vulcans.
After the team maintaining her were stopped accessing the airfield she started to decay and suffered some vandalism. XM655 at Wellesbourne now has two of her engines and still performs taxi runs. Recently restored to top static condition XM603 is the only preserved Vulcan in the all-white colour scheme.
The classic shape of the MiG-21 two-seater roars over the crowd during the Boboc Air Show 2018 held at the Şcoala de Aplicaţie pentru Forţele Aeriene. Flown by general de flotilă aeriană Cătălin Băhneanu și comandor Dan Moise, the nimble UM is in reheat and pulling vapor.

The BlackBox Cold War exhibition depicts the division of Germany and Berlin in the context of the international bloc confrontation at the historical site of the 1961 tank confrontation.
In the exhibition, which is unique in Germany, 16 media stations, a small cinema, documents and original objects show what the Berlin Wall has to do with the Korean War and the Cuban Missile Crisis and open the view to the global dimension of the East-West confrontation .

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 is a Soviet variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. Introduced in 1970, it boasts a top speed of Mach 2.35 and a range of 1,300 km. Armed with a 23mm GSh-23 cannon and a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, it played a significant role during the Cold War.

My dream came true to see the Flanker fly before my eyes, to hear it, to feel it. And my desire is to do it justice and present this aircraft, one of the most beautiful ever built, fittingly. The pilot is now coming in for landing, with the airbrake extended, at the conclusion of its evening display during Bucharest International Air Show 2016. 1/80th of a second exposure panning shot to show the speed of this beauty!

It could be East-Germany in the 1980s, during the cold war. But it's not : this is Paris in 1998 just before the avenue de France was built.
Feel the heat! During the evening display, the pilot threw the aircraft around using generous helpings of afterburner. Powered by two Lyulka/Saturn Al-31F afterburning turbofan engines developing 123 kN each. Bucharest International Air Show 2016.

This F-14A, BuNo 158985, was from one of the first production batches of the F-14A and was delivered to the U.S. Navy's VF-2 ("Bounty Hunters") aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in 1974. It would be among the Tomcats covering the final evacuation of American forces from South Vietnam during Operation Frequent Wind in 1975.
158985 would remain with VF-2 until 1980, when it was transferred ashore to serve with VF-124 ("Gunfighters"), the Pacific Fleet's Replacement Squadron for Tomcats at NAS Miramar, California. In 1983, 158985 went back to sea with VF-1 ("Wolfpack") aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63), and then made its last stop with VF-191 ("Satan's Kittens") in 1987.
That squadron was disestablished in 1988, but 158985 wouldn’t be retired until 1992, so it may have returned to VF-124 although I have unable to confirm this. By 2013, the aircraft was part of the Yanks Air Museum’s impressive collection and restored in the colors of VF-2. 158985 shows VF-2's 1975-era colors when the Tomcats still carried the Vietnam-era light gray over white scheme, and every aircraft in the squadron had full-color insignia.
