Tulips are lovely flowers to paint. I quite enjoyed doing the design for the foreground of this painting with the complex negative and positive spaces.

I stopped on a back road to snap a shot of this little house that I've always found charming. It's at the bottom of a large property and is maintained, but for what, I'm not sure. It's not an old cold house, and I'm so curious what it was/is used for.

Painting flowers in watercolor is so relaxing for me. Once I get started the time goes by so fast.

A big thank you to Sally Robertson for sharing her photo.

This month, I put the new Stonehenge Aqua hotpress paper to the test. I used almost all the pencils I have, and I must say, I'm pretty impressed.

I started with the Supracolor II for my underpainting because I didn't want to use mineral spirit. But I had mixed feelings with the result. The layers didn't look as smooth as I had hoped for, but I guess it's normal when using hotpress paper. I'm sure it would have looked better on the coldpress paper. So the next step was a mixture of all the other brands, chosen for either the choice of colors or the hardness for the details, or softness for blending. I did end up using mineral spirit at this stage to even out and soften those new layers. I could have left it that way, it looked very soft, but I wanted to add more details and texture, so I went ahead and used more layers that I blended together with the Coloursoft pencils. They worked great for the final burnishing.

I really gave the Stonehenge Aqua a beating, and it took it all. I must say, after this test, I like it better than the Fabriano Artistico hotpress because of the texture. I never liked the grain on the Fabriano. To me, it looks more velvety on the Stonehenge Aqua, my new best friend!

I was inspired by a photo took many years ago. Every summer, when my daughters were young, we spent two week at the sea, sometimes Cape Cod, sometimes, Ogunquit, other times Stone Harbor, N.J. or Cape May. I kept wonderful memories of these summers.

Hyalophora cecropia, the cecropia moth, is North America's largest native moth. It is a member of the family Saturniidae, or giant silk moths. Females have been documented with a wingspan of five to seven inches or more (from Wikipedia).

I photographed this mating pair at a nearby arboretum and rendered them with watercolors and artpen on Fabriano coldpress paper ~6" x 9".

For a week I came and went via this station in this small town in Chiba. It didn't look particularly impressive. Life was slower here than Tokyo. At the morning commute, the station wasn't very crowded or noisy. The sun shone on one side of the exit. The air was quite cold yet refreshing. Everybody was quiet and the stores were still closed. I looked around, sleepy, and happy, and I could smell udon from the shop inside. I really missed the feeling of that moment.

Now let's bleach the blues and tone the prints in green tea. The properties of the Shizen Design paper remain the same and it shows another advantage for this process. The paper itself seems to resist staining very well. The tea toner attaches mostly to the previously coated and bleached areas and leaves the bare paper alone ... #etbtsy

So what was the next thing to learn? I have been getting very dark mid-tones resulting in a compressed tone curve with mostly dark tones and then usually blown highlights. To fight back, I had tried to select mostly bright photographs that seemed to work much better, as in this Helfštýn print. However, I did not want to be ... #etbtsy

#DoodlewashJune2025 Prompt: Magpie.

Did you know that Magpie Geese are unusual for several reasons? The male tramples reeds into a floating bed for his mate. Or mates - they like to breed two females to a male! The females lay their eggs on this bed and they feed their young rather than just leading them to food as other waterfowl do. Last but not least, they have a hind toe on their webbed feet that allows them to climb and sleep in trees.

Despite the many recommendations I read not to use white tea but green instead, I am a white tea fan so far. Unlike what the internet says I find 4 tea bags per 500ml working perfectly fine, darks become dark enough, and white tea barely stains the paper. I also like the colder tones compared to ... #etbtsy

The little book on the IFC is for quotations I discover throughout the year, the stamp is from an old letter from my grandmother, the drawing of the ink pot is one in my studio which holds found feathers instead of ink, the notes are reminder to start playing (try to play) my mandolin again.

The pages in this sketchbook are a mix: Arches coldpress, Fabriano hotpress, Stonehenge drawing (tan, grey, blue) and Strathmore Tan and Grey multimedia.
