I found this photo in morguefile and thought it would be fun for my "Facing Forward" Sketchbook Project theme. It is painted on Arches 140# coldpress; I'll make a copy for the book.

Stimulated by beautiful works of k-s-b. Process is called anthotype (Greek "anthos" - blossom). It involves coating paper with pigments extracted from flowers, and then bleaching highlights by positive transparency film under the Sun. As in this case fruit was used instead of flowers, should we create a novel term for the process: "fructitype" or "carpotype"? :)

The second paper is the Meeden Textured Surface Cold Press Watercolor Paper. Overall lot more subtle than the first, with noticeable texture but regular and accepting the emulsion very evenly. Results are of lower contrast, lot more details are preserved but the images appear a little blurrier overall. It is really important to use ... #etbtsy

The Meeden Textured Paper is very different from this point of view. While its other Cyanotype properties also still hold true, green tea tones the previously coated, exposed, and bleached surfaces as well as a stains the paper itself, which is clearly visible in the last print ... #etbtsy

April
If you had come away with me
into another state
we had been quiet together.
But there the sun coming up
out of the nothing beyond the lake was
too low in the sky,
there was too great a pushing
against him,
too much of sumac buds, pink
in the head
with the clear gum upon them,
too many opening hearts of lilac leaves,
too many, too many swollen
limp poplar tassels on the
bare branches!
It was too strong in the air.
I had no rest against that
springtime!
The pounding of the hoofs on the
raw sods
stayed with me half through the night.
I awoke smiling but tired.

I was really happy with how this particular photograph turned out as a cyanotype. It fit the process and the rough paper texture very well and so far remains one of my most favorite cyanotype creations. It will be hard to top. I've been looking for a medium that could combine oil, watercolor and acrylic all these years and I think I've just found it thanks to @mattlumpkin When I first saw his gouache sketches at Mt-Wilson, I realized that I could paint very fast dry opaque texture yet easily correctable with all the advantages of oil but could be glazed with washes like watercolor. Today I tried all these wonderful attributes of gouache here and it seemed to deliver just exactly what I thought.

A friend just posted a large size gouache 18" x 24" and we were discussing how gouache in large size would differ from acrylic or even oil. My thought is that gouache should behave more or less like acrylic. So, I took out my large paper pad 18" x 24" and tested it out my theory. I was not entirely correct. Acrylic flows much better than gouache and has more volume since acrylic comes from tubes, large tubes. Gouache just doesn't have enough volume in the box, and I quickly ran out of paint. Also, gouache dries faster with small dabs on the brushes. So I struggled to get it to behave like acrylic. But it really feels good to slap large chunks of gouache on with the big filbert brushes. That brought back good feelings from the oil painting days. I need to get big tubes of gouache in order to paint big.

I stopped on a back road to snap a shot of this little house that I've always found charming. It's at the bottom of a large property and is maintained, but for what, I'm not sure. It's not an old cold house, and I'm so curious what it was/is used for.
