Blaberus Giganteus is considered one of the largest cockroaches in the world, with males growing to reach lengths of 7.5 cm and females 10 cm. This species is endemic to Central America and northern South America, and can be found in the rainforests.

Prior to mating, the female emits an explosive sex pheromone, which initiates long courtship rituals in males. The male raises his wings at right angles to his abdomen, and begins trembling his abdomen. If the female is enticed, the pair then join, in an end-to-end position, which they may stay in for several hours. Males will often fight over the females, sometimes to the death. When mating is complete, the female is pregnant for life. Adults can live up to 20 months.

Cockroaches play a very integral ecological role in their rainforest homes, by helping to decompose forest litter and animal fecal matter and are, in turn, food for many other animals. The cockroach dates back over 200-300 million years, and is one of the most adaptable and resilient of all animals.

I heard what I've come to recognize as the distress sounds of robin parents guarding their young. But this time their sounds were more urgent and intense. It was not just, "Danger lurks!" Rather, it was more like, "Embodied danger attacks!"

I ran and opened the front door and saw four adult robins and two house finches all perched on mock pear tree branches. They were leaning together, essentially pointing with their beaks to a single area of the lilac bush. It was directly in front of me.

I moved forward and looked down to see this gartersnake with its tail wrapped, knot-like, around a branch. It was hanging down at ground level and it had a newly-fledged baby robin in its tight grip.

The baby looked at me while it was trying to wrestle its wing free from its predator. I quickly took the branch and shook it, enough for the snake to loose its hold.

The baby robin managed to pull away, barely flying above the level of the lawn. It looked like it was flying evenly and that its wing wasn't damaged.

Immediately the adult robins gathered near the baby and guided it to cover, away from the snake. I followed the snake for a few moments and noted that it was opening and closing its mouth with a downy feather stuck to the inside. No baby bird dinner at this time.

a bedewed and immobilized dragonfly waits for the sun on a cool summer morning. conditions have to be just right to catch these critters- a clear, windless, and above all cool night are key. then you have to find them and work quickly before their blood warms up. 09 presented several good opportunities- 10 not so many- i'm hoping for better luck in 11.

My favorite serpent of India, the common Indian Vine snake (Ahaetulla nasuta). This feisty looking fellow was found on Agumbe Rainforest Research Station property but can be found throughout India.

With their unique pupils and their threatening gaping mouths, the green vine snake is usually pretty good about warding off predators. Locals even refer to them as "eye pluckers" as it is rumored to pluck eye balls from predators. This snake lives primarily in trees, feeds mostly on lizards and has rear fangs. Although this snake is mildly venomous, most bites from this species will not yield any life threatening reactions, but may be dangerous for someone who happens to be allergic to the venom.

Portrait of a panther chameleon. They can change color based on their mood. Image of the other panther chameleon shown in first comment section.

Wikipedia-

The panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) is a species of chameleon found in the eastern and northern parts of Madagascar in a tropical forest biome.

Panther chameleons are zygodactylous: on each foot, the five toes are fused into a group of two and a group of three, giving the foot a tongs-like appearance. These specialized feet allow the panther chameleon a tight grip on narrow branches.

Their eyes are the most distinctive among the reptiles and function like a gun turret. They can rotate and focus separately to observe two different objects simultaneously; their eyes move independently from each other. It in effect gives them a full 360-degree arc of vision around their bodies.

Panther chameleons have very long tongues which they are capable of rapidly extending out of the mouth. The tongue extends at around 26 body lengths per second. The tongue hits the prey in about 0.0030 sec. At the base of the tongue, a bone is shot forward, giving the tongue the initial momentum it needs to reach the prey quickly. At the tip of this elastic tongue, a muscular, club-like structure covered in thick mucus forms a suction cup. Once the tip sticks to a prey item, it is drawn quickly back into the mouth, where the panther chameleon's strong jaws crush it and it is consumed.

Wikipedia-

Furcifer balteatus, also known as the two-banded chameleon or the rainforest chameleon, is a species of chameleon that is endemic to Madagascar. It was described by André Marie Constant Duméril and Gabriel Bibron in 1851.

Furcifer balteatus is endemic to southeast Madagascar. It can be found in Ranomafana where the average temperature is between 14 and 20 degrees Celsius (57 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit) and the rainfall is roughly 4,000 millimetres (160 inches) per annum. It has been found over an estimated area of 1,971 square kilometres (761 square miles) but has a "patchy distribution" and is believed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature to be decreasing in population.

Most sightings were at a height of 800 to 1,050 metres (2,620 to 3,440 ft) above sea level but some were at lower altitudes. It is a rare species and most of the sightings were of single individuals. Some surveys have failed to locate any individuals and it is ranked as an Endangered species by the IUCN. The major threat to this species is degradation of its forest habitat. It is a CITES-listed species and export from Madagascar has been banned since 1994. Nevertheless, it is believed to be highly desirable to the pet trade and illegal exports are a threat.

Though basically green, Furcifer balteatus is variable in colour and is well camouflaged in its arboreal surroundings. It often has darker green diagonal stripes with paler bands between and usually has a characteristic buff-coloured diagonal streak. The body length can be as much as 24 cm (9 in) and the tail as least as long again. The males have a pair of horny projections 1.5 cm (0.6 in) long on their heads. It is commonly known as the two-banded chameleon or the rainforest chameleon.

The roots of lotus are planted in the soil of the pond or river bottom, while the leaves float on top of the water surface or are held well above it. The flowers are usually found on thick stems rising several centimeters above the leaves. The plant normally grows up to a height of about 150 cm and a horizontal spread of up to 3 meters, but some unverified reports place the height as high as over 5 meters. The leaves may be as large as 60 cm in diameter, while the showy flowers can be up to 20 cm in diameter.

Researchers report that the lotus has the remarkable ability to regulate the temperature of its flowers to within a narrow range just as humans and other warmblooded animals do.[4] Dr. Roger S. Seymour and Dr. Paul Schultze-Motel, physiologists at the University of Adelaide in Australia, found that lotus flowers blooming in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens maintained a temperature of 30–35 °C (86–95 °F), even when the air temperature dropped to 10 °C (50 °F). They suspect the flowers may be doing this to attract coldblooded insect pollinators. The study, published in the journal Nature, is the latest discovery in the field of thermoregulation, heat-producing, plants. Two other species known to be able to regulate their temperature include Symplocarpus foetidus and Philodendron selloum.

Wikipedia-

The Parson's chameleon (Calumma parsonii) is a large species of chameleon that is endemic to isolated pockets of humid primary forest in eastern and northern Madagascar.

A long-lived species, C. parsonii may not reach sexual maturity until they are 3 - 5 years of age and may live to be more than 20 years old. C. parsonii are native to the primary rainforests of the elevated eastern area of Madagascar, up to an altitude of about 7,000 feet. However, their range extends all the way down to the eastern coast, where trade winds bring moisture ladden air to the land.

Parson's are very stationary animals. Adults may go for long periods without moving except to eat, drink, mate or deficate. They also do not spend much time basking, like many other true chameleons. They will, however, sit in the sun for short periods and slightly flatten one side of their body toward the sun. These sunning sessions are rarely more than 10 - 15 minutes long and usually take place early in the morning as soon as sun is available.

Near threatened according to the IUCN red list. The loss of humid forest, mainly through conversion from slash-and-burn agriculture but also due to logging, is a threat to this species. Much of the habitat of this species is extremely fragmented, and small forest fragments are unlikely to be viable to ensure persistence of this large chameleon that occurs at low densities.

Lol, I'm staying up all night, tonight - will explain later tomorrow or the following morning when I post my next shots. Thought I'd post my daily three now (around 1:00 am), otherwise I might end up missing a day : )

This afternoon, 1 May 2016, I just needed to get out with my camera. The sun was shining and I had a bit of time. Drove down to Fish Creek Park, forgetting that on a Sunday, it would be packed with walkers, cyclists, fishermen, people having a picnic or BBQ - and a few photographers.

Spotted a lost kid's toy - a bright yellow, plastic duck - floating in the creek and couldn't resist capturing this unusual spring visitor. Nearby, was a turtle - presumably a Painted Turtle. I need to look up about wild ones in Alberta. It was camouflaged so well, looking like a rock in the water. I don't know how this turtle got here, whether naturally or if someone released it into our area.

"The western painted turtle (Chrysemys picta bellii) can be found in Canada’s western provinces, as far east as Ontario. But this colourful turtle is struggling to survive. The Canadian Wildlife Federation is funding research to better manage western painted turtle populations. The Rocky Mountain western painted turtle is listed as of special concern by the Species at Risk Act and COSEWIC."

Lizards are reptilian, often four-legged, cold-blooded, with an integumentary system comprising scales, with a skull composed of quadrate bones. Lizards also possess external ears and movable eyelids. Encompassing forty families, there is tremendous variety in color, appearance and size. Many lizards can change color in response to their environments or in times of stress. This is the Tyrrhenian wall lizard, a genus of lizard sometimes which belong to the family of Lacertidae, the wall lizards. These species populate an area which covers the whole of Sardinia and Corsica from sea level up to the mountain regions - 1800 meters in Sardinia; is also present in several smaller islands of Sardinia.

The Tyrrhenian lizard has a slender body and flattened, 20-24 cm long, of which two thirds represented by the tail. The head has a triangular profile, very distinct from the body, with sharp, blunt snout and clearly eardrum. The color may vary: the back and sides have background colors ranging from green to yellow to brown. Lengthwise bright stripes trimmed with dark. On each side are usually 2-7 blue spots present. The ventral parts are lighter, with varying shades, usually whitish or yellowish or pink or orange tones. Samantha notice this little fellow between one of the rocks of Punta Molentis. It is part of the Marine Protected Area of Capo Carbonara Sardinia, Italy. Photo taken with EF-S 18-135, it’s not a macro lens, but zoomed out and at closest focus it will cover an area as small as about 75 × 112mm. You have to react fast so no time to change lenses.

This agama male (check out the bright orange pattern on his face and back) was basking on a little rock besides the road. Suddenly, it ran out towards the road like a rocket, stopped for a jiffy and ran back to the safety of the rock.

On getting a closer look, noted that he has picked one hairy caterpillar. Once he caught his breath after all the running for about 5 seconds, he just gulped the unfortunate caterpillar, which just slid down his throat!

Pirates of The Mississippi - Fish Bait

The Fish

by Elizabeth Bishop

I caught a tremendous fish

and held him beside the boat

half out of water, with my hook

fast in a corner of his mouth.

He didn't fight.

He hadn't fought at all.

He hung a grunting weight,

battered and venerable

and homely. Here and there

his brown skin hung in strips

like ancient wallpaper,

and its pattern of darker brown

was like wallpaper:

shapes like full-blown roses

stained and lost through age.

He was speckled and barnacles,

fine rosettes of lime,

and infested

with tiny white sea-lice,

and underneath two or three

rags of green weed hung down.

While his gills were breathing in

the terrible oxygen

--the frightening gills,

fresh and crisp with blood,

that can cut so badly--

I thought of the coarse white flesh

packed in like feathers,

the big bones and the little bones,

the dramatic reds and blacks

of his shiny entrails,

and the pink swim-bladder

like a big peony.

I looked into his eyes

which were far larger than mine

but shallower, and yellowed,

the irises backed and packed

with tarnished tinfoil

seen through the lenses

of old scratched isinglass.

They shifted a little, but not

to return my stare.

--It was more like the tipping

of an object toward the light.

I admired his sullen face,

the mechanism of his jaw,

and then I saw

that from his lower lip

--if you could call it a lip

grim, wet, and weaponlike,

hung five old pieces of fish-line,

or four and a wire leader

with the swivel still attached,

with all their five big hooks

grown firmly in his mouth.

A green line, frayed at the end

where he broke it, two heavier lines,

and a fine black thread

still crimped from the strain and snap

when it broke and he got away.

Like medals with their ribbons

frayed and wavering,

a five-haired beard of wisdom

trailing from his aching jaw.

I stared and stared

and victory filled up

the little rented boat,

from the pool of bilge

where oil had spread a rainbow

around the rusted engine

to the bailer rusted orange,

the sun-cracked thwarts,

the oarlocks on their strings,

the gunnels--until everything

was rainbow, rainbow, rainbow!

And I let the fish go.

Every time I walk past this pond I hear "Kerplunk" as the frogs disappear into the pond weeds. Yesterday, the weather was cool enough to have them stay still of a few shots. I've developed a technique to get close to animals like this, Basically, I hide behind the camera and move very slowly.

. . . Took a peak inside the nest box and now we have three little blind, featherless, cold blooded dinosaurs! At this stage they have to be fed on a regular schedule, to be able to keep warm. After the feathers come in, they turn warm blooded and can maintain their body heat a little easier.
