Taken on Tuesday night, it was -3° standing on the bank of the Liffey. I would have liked to spend more time about here but I was not prepared for the cold. Time to get the Winter gear back in the car!

7 frame in-camera multiple exposure. This image is pretty much straight off the camera, bracketing was not required.

On this hot summer night, thought it might be a good idea to return to a colder time...

It has been a warm and gray winter so far. But last week we had a little snow. I like the LED lamp sitting in the back of our garden - my favorite color this cold time of year is RED :-)

The Leeds Historical Expedition Society was up on the viaduct at 6am in freezing cold -5 degrees temperatures to take some night shots of Leeds from the old disused Holbeck viaduct.

Over the next few hours the birds started tweeting and the all mighty sun rose above the horizon to greet us on this frosty morning. A good but very cold time was had by all who attended.

Happy Wannabe Warmer Wednesday! www.flickr.com/groups/wannabe_warmer_wed/pool/with/532710...

This was taken last June when the days were warmer and birds were busy nesting at Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge. and posted today so I could submit into the above group and to warm you at this cold time of year. The weather here today is just above freezing...and raining.

Today is finally cold. Time for some resting and a cup of tea ^o^

Well, the weather forecast for Kananaskis for yesterday, 24 September 2019, was not exactly accurate - sun, with cloud in the afternoon. They kind of forgot to mention the strong wind, light rain .... and SNOW! For a few minutes, it was one kind of weather, then a few more minutes of a different kind, repeated throughout the afternoon.

Our temperatures are falling - forecast for rain tomorrow, rain and snow the next day, then two days of snow with temps down to 0C and -1C. What a way to celebrate the first few days of fall. The expected snow will probably remove quite a few of the golden leaves, so I wanted anther chance to see and photograph them while I had the chance.

The sky was blue when I set out yesterday morning and I felt quite hopeful. When I go to Kananaskis, I always go south from the city. I had no idea where I would be going, but I knew that it wouldn't be as far as I would have liked. As it turned out, I had a few surprises along the way, so it was a real mixed day of photo opportunities - my favourite kind of day.

After stopping to take a few scenic shots on the way to the main highway through Kananaskis, I eventually reached the area where the American Pikas live. I really lucked out almost straight away, as the only few photos I took were when one Pika showed itself, and that was within maybe ten minutes. By this time, the wind was strong and it was snowing, and it was cold! Time to get out of there, as the scree slope is treacherous enough on a calm, clear day.

Driving further north, I was delighted to see a convoy of maybe a dozen beautiful old cars heading in my direction. Couldn't resist, so I followed them when they turned off into a small picnic area. I asked if I could take a few quick photos and they were happy enough for me to do that. One car owner did comment about blurry photos because of the falling snow, but surprisingly my photos came out sharp enough.

Further on, I made a quick stop at another pull-off and was happy to notice a few mushrooms. When I turned around to head for home, I was even happier. I pulled over to take a photo of one of the mountain peaks. One tiny white speck in the distance, just off the road, caught my eye. When I went to check it out, I found myself staring at a little group of Shaggy Mane/Ink Cap mushrooms. The largest one had already started the process of curling up the rim of its cap and dripping a black ink. So much rain this year has resulted in such an amazing fungi season.

Much closer to home, I decided to take a side road that has such beautiful hill and mountain views. An old wooden barn was a welcome surprise - I don't remember seeing this one before.

So, a lovely day out, driving 320 km, with such a mixture of weather and sightings. So glad I did decide to go - as usual, a very last minute decision, but basically, I just need to grab my cameras and go : )

At ESA’s mission control, before the launch comes the pre-launch briefing – and the all-important group photo. This is the team that will fly Juice to Jupiter with four planetary flybys of Earth and Venus, then switching orbit from Jupiter to its largest moon, Ganymede, followed by a tour of the icy, complex Jovian system comprising a whopping 35 lunar flybys.

Never before has a mission switched orbit from a planet other than our own to one of its moons. Radiation at Jupiter will be extreme. Light at the edge of the solar system will be just 3% of what powers us on Earth. It will be cold. Time delays of up to two hours mean teams are only ever communicating with a spacecraft in the past. Ten science instruments need to be oriented precisely, without interference, from hundreds of millions of kilometres away.

Juice was made for this extreme environment, and mission control is ready to navigate it. Back-to-back critical operations over the next decade will make this possible. We are GREEN for Juice launch.

winter is the best time to find out who you are. quiet, contemplation time, away from the rushing world, cold time, dark time, holed-up pulled-in time and space to see that inner landscape, that place hidden and within. - david budbill

persimmon time, soon! the first are ripening, many more on the trees around, we might have to gather from wild roads and friends because our few 'kakis' fell unripe to the ground... a heart warming color in this colder time of year

Back to posting another five images from my archives. As usual, I will add the description from under a previously posted photo taken on the same outing.

HAPPY SPRING, EVERYONE!

Sunday, 20 March 2022: our temperature was 0°C (windchill -7°C) at 1:00 pm. Sunrise was at 7:39 am, and sunset was at 7:49 pm. We had a tiny bit of snow last night/this morning.

Well, I sometimes need a burst of cheer especially during this cold time of the year! Happy Friday everyone and a very happy weekend to all! :)

Burnaby Mountain, Burnaby, BC.

As the bracken fern slowly sink back into the earth, the final days of their yearly existence resemble the last glowing embers of a fire as it exhausts what remains of it's fuel. Even as their light is extinguished, the warmth they bring to the forest at this cold time of year is enough to uplift even the lowest of spirits.

It's PocketGacha time! I made a cute lil picnic set to enjoy the sunshine with before we start heading into the cold time of year.

The Picnic blankets sit 3 avatars and there single and cuddle sits in there ^_^

i'm leaving

(we are leaving with Tapioka) for a few days,

take care everyone :)

They are amazing and rare.

You can only see them in cold parts of the world and only in winter or cold time and only at sunrise or sunset.

What a coincidence! Right now, as I'm writing this description I looked out the window and saw these clouds again.

And took a few pictures.

But this photo was taken last month, on December 19, 2024.

Summer begins and so it is time to move the wood that was felled in winter from the forest in order to process it into firewood over the summer. Because after the cold time in the mountains it is usually before the next cold again and so we now have about 4 months to prepare for it. Of course, we would much rather do this work with a back horse, but unfortunately that doesn't exist in Second Life yet. The first mowing will also be imminent soon and so we are also servicing our equipment and vehicles.

The train to Gosau is already waiting for you maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Gosau%20Dachstein%20West/1...

We have activated a realistic 24 hour EEP day cycle that corresponds to the real weather and the time of day (GMT +1).

Chimbu woman with a baby (Papua New Guinea)

The Chimbu tribes are located in the Chimbu (or Simbu) Province in the central Highlands of Papua New Guinea.

The term “Chimbu” was given to the people by the first Australian explorers in 1934, who heard the word “simbu” (which is an expression of a pleasant surprise in the local language) exclaimed by the locals when they first met.

They are well known for their huge headdresses made from feathers of birds of paradise, with some of them up to one meter long. The tribal people from Chimbu Province decorate their bodies with kina shells, and they may paint themselves with mud and clay mixed with oil from plants and pig’s fat to make the body shine and to keep it warm during the cold time of the day.

Traditionally, the Chimbu tribes don’t live in villages but in dispersed settlements. Typical houses in Chimbu Province are oval or rectangular, with dirt floors, low thatched roofs, and walls woven from flattened reeds. Men live in large communal men’s houses (hausman) set on ridges for defensive purpose while women, children, and pigs live in separate houses. Today, with the influence of the modern world, the majority of men and women live together as a couple.

Well...when it's constantly raining, windy and cold...time to mess around indoors.

Remember the cold time of the year? It is so hot to show nylon covered feet in heels!

Shot taken from a tour boat outside Haiphong, Vietnam, destined for Halong Bay (2012). It might have been an ill-advised, cold time of year to visit, but despite the fact that the constant fog affected viewing distance, it added an ethereal charm (which, incidentally, did little to mitigate being stuck in the middle of freezing nowhere for hours, improperly clothed, after we broke down—the junk clearly did its best to live up to more than one definition of that word).

Here's a link to the image in its original context on my site (plus more photos, info, and prints).

Posh Bear sat down beside his friends having brushed his fur and now ready to have his photograph taken…again. The man was busy sorting out the camera and such and didn’t notice the confused expression on Sky’s face.

“What have you been doing this morning?” Posh asked his friends.

“I’ve been counting the jars of honey, Posh and we have more than three.” Said Bertie smiling.

“I’ve been trying to solve a widdle.” Said Sky rubbing his head with his paw.

“A widdle? I’m not sure you mean that, Sky.” Said Bertie giggling.

“I am confused with thunking and it really is a big widdle.” He replied looking at both Posh and Bertie.

“I think you mean a riddle, Sky. So, what is this riddle?” Said Posh smiling gently as his young friend.

“Well, Posh, outside it is getting colder, much colder and the days are becoming shorter. Inside the man gets around the problem by heating the house and using electrickery lights. He also wears more clothes so he keeps warm.”

“Yes, that is right Sky, that is quite normal, so, what is the riddle?” Asked Posh Bear.

“Well, don’t you see, Posh? Outside the trees and bushes are taking off their clothes and soon will be bare and cold having worn all those clothes all hot summer long, yet in here, the man is doing the very opposite. Now, one of them might have just got it wrong, and I am hoping that it isn’t the man, and he realises his mistake and makes the house cold.”

“I agree with you Sky, I am confused by it as well. After all, in the dark and dismal days of winter hoomans and bears alike would love to see lots of lovely coloured flowers in the garden, and of course there is very little. In the summer when it is bright and warm then the gardens are flooded in colour. The bright flowers cheer everyone up, I think, as hoomans generally seem happier in the summer when it is nice and warm and the light and heater in the sky is turned on for longer outside. I could never work out why they don’t just pay the extra and leave it switch on all the time.” Said Bertie looking at his friend Sky to see if he agreed.

“That’s right, Bertie, with all those flowers in colour so the buzzy things would come out and make lots more honey, so it would be extra good and then there wouldn’t be a widdle to solve.” Said Sky now much happier his friend agreed with him and he wasn’t alone in his thoughts.

“It can’t work like that though, for you see when we have it cold here, and it is called winter by hoomans, on the other side of this planet it is there summer and they have the heater and light in the sky. We take it in turns as the planet revolves.” Explained Posh Bear.

“Can’t they afford one of their own then, Posh? Do we have to share?” Asked Bertie.

“It isn’t a matter of affording, Bertie, there is only one heater and light in the sky and they can’t put another one up there.”

“I’m sure there should be another one up there somewhere, I think I’ll mention it to Orange Ellie and ask her to look next time she is up in the ellicopter.” Said Bertie after a think.

“We could ask Pink Ellie if she has seen one too, Bertie, I mean she has collided into most things up there, so she would know.”

“That is a great idea, Sky. Going back to what Posh was saying about the other side of the planet now having sunshine, do you think all the trees and bushes should really be over there instead of here right now and then come back here next cold time when they are all wrapped up in leaves so they can stay warm? Maybe they got lost once upon a time and still haven’t found their ways back to where they should be.” Argued Bertie.

“A very manure and considered suggestion, Bertie.” Said Sky nodding his head thoughtfully.

“Sky, I think you mean mature and not manure… although come to think about it…” said Posh Bear smiling.

One of the joys of this cold time of the year are the camelias in bloom in our garden.

Even in the cold time of the year, my wife understands our hunger for her feet in sheer nylons - and she pleases our desire!

Where did the sunshine go....

Such a nice albeit cold time to go walking down the streets.

People walking around, shoulders hunched, all padded up against the cold.

Funny how we went from summer to autumn in such a short space of time!
