A couple of times on our trip we encountered really great coffee. But only a couple of times. For the most part, we were face to face with Nescafe sprinkles. This was moderately disturbing for a number of reasons; the first being that it’s unnatural and frankly wrong to brew coffee, distill it to crystals and then expect it to taste good the second time around (it’s like coffee backwash), the second being that we were in a region of the world which produces some amazing coffee, and the third being that I grew up in SEATTLE and am equal parts genuine coffee snob and hard-core addict. But in an effort not to turn into the ugly American travelers we sort of let it go when we couldn’t find any, and horded it when we could.
One thing about the breakfasts in Thailand is that you’re not exactly eating breakfast food. You’re just eating food. For breakfast. (Get it?) So, a sometimes appropriate substitute would be an equally tempting brown nectar – the Diet Coke (Except that in Thailand it’s called Coke Light. And you were actually pretty lucky if you could find that – the Thai’s generally like their drinks with about 8 spoonfuls of sugar (Erik will rant and rave about the green tea for days if you give him an inch…never could find any that didn’t taste like Lucky Charms, until we got to Japan)). This particular photo is taken of our last breakfast in Thailand. We walked down the beach from our hotel to this little restaurant we’d found on our first night there. We had Pad Si-Ew and Diet Coke. And I have to say that for a substitute, Coke Light tastes a lot better with spicy fried noodles than coffee does. Sorry Howard Shultz, looks like there may be one market you can’t corner.

A snapshot, in all honesty. But I found the play interesting... Coke Light, a brand built on the proposition of minimalism on one side, with its logo incidentally illuminated by a small flame -- light.

Also with my desk lamp. I decided to crop the top of because it was out of focus and it seemed better this way...
