Reverse side of a Russian 25-ruble commemorative 2018 FIFA World Cup coin. This particular coin series was minted in 2016, several other 2018 World Cup coins were released in 2017 and 2018.

This is real money, nominal value is 25 rubles (approx. 30 cents), although I don't think anyone has actually ever used these coins as means of payment. As most commemorative coins. they all probably went straight from the Mint to coin collections.

Today, as a collector's item it is worth about twice its original value.

Ok, I'm falling down on the job of acquiring new photos. Here's a chromed Citizens/Frontier/GTE/Verizon/General Telephone coin collector made by Automatic Electric. These things are made out of armor. I'm not sure how difficult it is to get chrome to stick to armor. It was impressively clean. The blue grommet on the armored handset cord means the handset is equipped with some kind of hearing aid coupler.

I think the carrier was originally General Telephone and Electronics. They changed their name to GTE then Verizon. They sold their wired service to Citizens Utilities (on the coin box). When they decided they didn't want to be in the heavily-regulated wired telephone business, they sold everything to Frontier (top escutcheon). Did I get it right?

GTE had a ad campaign where they'd toss out some impressive factoid. The guy on the commercial would say, "Gee!" and the announcer would say, "No, GTE." GTE was notorious for bad service in our area so I morphed this into, "Gee, the phone's dead!" Announcer, "No, GTE."

Over half of mankind has never dialed a telephone number. There are more telephone lines in Manhattan than in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa.

— Thabo Mbeki (circa 1995)

Half the world dies without ever making or receiving a phone call.

French coins always have cool designs and this is a good example. These coins, however, are not made out of silver. They are copper-nickel. Many of these coins have a B mint mark for the Beaumont mint. If you can find a coin dated 1958 without a B mint mark, as this one is, it is rare.

Obverse : Laureate Bust of Marianne, facing right with flaming torch on right hand; "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE".

Reverse : 100 FRANCS in two lines at left (date) with cornucopia at left and wing at right, ears and olive branches below right, R.COCHET; "LIBERTE-EGALITE-FRATERNITE".

Marianne has been the national personification of the French Republic since the French Revolution, as a personification of liberty, equality, fraternity and reason, and a portrayal of the Goddess of Liberty.

Released 28/3/17 to replace the old £1 coin, many new features as detailed below , I had to visit three banks and a number of shops to get some of these coins today, will post a few more photos later I get home .

The new coin has a number of features that make it much more difficult to counterfeit.

12-sided – its distinctive shape makes it instantly recognisable, even by touch.

Bimetallic – it is made of two metals. The outer ring is gold coloured (nickel-brass) and the inner ring is silver coloured (nickel-plated alloy).

Latent image – it has an image like a hologram that changes from a ‘£’ symbol to the number '1' when the coin is seen from different angles.

Micro-lettering – it has very small lettering on the lower inside rim on both sides of the coin. One pound on the obverse “heads” side and the year of production on the reverse “tails” side, for example 2016 or 2017.

Milled edges – it has grooves on alternate sides.

Hidden high security feature – a high security feature is built into the coin to protect it from counterfeiting in the future.

In 1797 the British government authorized Matthew Boulton to strike copper pennies and twopences at his Soho Mint, in Birmingham. It was believed that the face value of a coin should correspond to the value of the material it was made from, so each coin was made from two pence worth of copper (2 ounces). This requirement means that the coins are significantly larger than the silver pennies minted previously. The large size of the coins, combined with the thick rim where the inscription was punched into the metal, led to the coins being nicknamed "cartwheels". All "cartwheel" twopences are marked with the date 1797. In total, around 720,000 twopences were minted.

With the right set up and software, a shot like this can take less than 5 minutes to complete, which makes our quality numismatic photography affordable. This F-15 grade uncertified British Crown sells for a little more than $200.

Faustina I the elder was born circa 100 AD and died in 140 AD. She was the wife of the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius, one of the Five Good Emperors. This sestertius was part of a third issue of coinage in her honour after her death and is likely to have been minted at some time between the end of the second issue (141 AD) and the end of Antonius Pius's reign as Roman Emperor, most likely toward the end of that reign. A more precise dating is not currently known. The coinage bears the legend DIVA FAVSTINA, not DIVA AVGVSTA, as the title of Augusta had passed onto her daugher, Faustina II the Younger.

Ceres was the Roman goddess of agriculture. She features prominently on coins of Faustina.

The gharial (Gavialis gangeticus), sometimes called the Indian gavial or gavial, is one of two surviving members of the family Gavialidae, a long-established group of crocodile-like reptiles with long, narrow jaws. Gharials once thrived in all the major river systems of the Indian subcontinent, spanning the rivers of its northern part from the Indus in Pakistan across the Gangetic floodplain to the Irrawaddy in Myanmar. Today their distribution is limited to only 2% of their former range. They are extinct in Pakistan's Indus River, in the Brahmaputra of Bhutan and Bangladesh and in the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar.

The Entente Cordiale, in English, Cordial Agreement, was a series of agreements signed on 8 April 1904 between the United Kingdom and the French Republic which saw a significant improvement in Anglo-French relations. Beyond the immediate concerns of colonial expansion addressed by the agreement, the signing of the Entente Cordiale marked the end of almost a thousand years of intermittent conflict between the two states and their predecessors, and replaced the modus vivendi that had existed since the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 with a more formal agreement.

The Sasanian Empire, officially known as the Empire of Iranians, was the last kingdom of the Persian Empire before the rise of Islam. Named after the House of Sasan, it ruled from 224 to 651 AD. The Sasanian Empire succeeded the Parthian Empire and was recognized as one of the leading world powers alongside its neighboring arch-rival, the Roman-Byzantine Empire for a period of more than 400 years.

In 1815 the St. Helena economy was bolstered by the arrival of the exiled Napoleon. The Emperor's entourage and the guarding force of British troops suddenly doubled the island's population bringing great prosperity. In order to sustain this growth the Company sent out £50,000 in dollars in 1819. St. Helena was at the peak of its prosperity.

Two years later, in 1821, wheels were set in motion for the supply of two copper coinages specifically struck for use on the island. The first issue was of an unofficial nature and originated from a local firm of merchants called Solomon, Dickson and Taylor. Instructions were sent to England for the manufacture of 70,560 halfpenny tokens. Responsibility for the second issue belonged to the Court of Directors of the Honourable East India Company based in England. They requested the Mint of Matthew Robinson Boulton, at Soho near Birmingham, to strike a copper coinage to the total value of £1,000. For this sum the Company received 702,704 halfpenny pieces.

Before either of the new copper coinages arrived in St. Helena, Napoleon died on 5th May 1821. Soon after, most of the troops, high military officers, civil servants and their families had left the island. Consequently the demand for the halfpenny pieces never reached the level originally conceived. In 1830 a large surplus stock of the East India Company copper coins in an unissued state was returned to England for melting. It would be easy to conclude from this event that the coinage was a failure. Far from it, the halfpennies remained in circulation on the island and proved an acceptable payment to all parties. These characteristics must have appeared very attractive to a Company which was still encountering difficulties in maintaining a regular supply of silver coin on St. Helena.

Ireland's Easter Rising, also known as the Easter Rebellion, was an armed insurrection during Easter Week, April 1916. The Rising was launched to end British rule in Ireland and establish an independent Irish Republic. At the time, the United Kingdom was heavily engaged in World War I. This coin was issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising.

The coin contains 0.486 troy ounces of silver, so it can never be worth less than its base value, or BV. To compute BV, multiply the current price of silver by 0.486.

“Gold for Iron” was the call during the 1st War; an exchange of gold for iron. Wedding rings, brooches, rings and jewelry (some of the symbolism of the Iron Cross were Echoing) issued to the citizens willing to donate.

Even though the action was voluntary, a considerable social pressure was been generated to participate.

The Social Control of involvement was simple: Those who wore the iron jewelry had proved to be a patriot, who showed a continued gold, lost its reputation.

Not only individuals but also institutions were invited to exchange gold for iron. This included the ability of clubs, churches and government agencies.

From 1916 a medal was presented as a reward for the supply of jewelry or an exchange of gold for paper money (which is quickly losing its value) from the Reichsbank to the population.

The medals were issued in numerous versions and very large numbers. They are made of blackened iron, have a weight of 15.4g - 20.4g and have a diameter of 39-41mm.

This medal was designed by Hermann Hosaeus.

The El Cazador, a Spanish brigantine of war, was lost without a trace in the winter of 1784 while on route from Vera Cruz Mexico to the port of New Orleans. The wreck site was accidentally discovered on August 2, 1993 by a fishing vessel working the area. The treasure of the El Cazador, consisting of over 400,000 Spanish 8 reales and an equal amount of smaller denomination Spanish colonial coins from the Mexico City mint, was intended to stabilize the Spanish monetary system in colonial North America. Her loss contributed to Spain's eventual conveyance of Louisiana to France's Napoleon in 1800. The rest is history, as three years later in 1803, Napoleon of France sold Louisiana to the United States, instantly doubling the size of the country.
