Sign Reads: Cog Railway "ABT" System

The cog system exhibited here is the one used bu the Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway. It was invented by the Swiss engineer Dr. Roman Abt. These t-rails(which support the weight),rack rails(which mesh with the cogs) and the cog wheels are actual size. The grade here is set at twenty five percent, or one foot rise for every four feet of forward travel. This is the maximum grade of the Pikes Peak Cog railway. Adhesion railways have a maximum grade of about eight percent.
