Avec son projet Open Media Commons, la société Sun Microsystems, déjà très active dans la communauté du logiciel libre, annonce OMS Video, un codec "open source gratuit". Basé sur le vieillot les codecs h.261 pour la vidéo et Vorbis pour l'audio, OMS se positionne comme une alternative sans redevance. Il y a cependant beaucoup de questions en suspend sur sa compétitivité par rapport au codec h.264 et sur la définition de sa licence open source. À suivre.

A remote site for robotic teleoperation is shown. The Mitsubishi PA-10 serves as the robotic hardware, and it is controlled using Energid Technologies' Actin software. Network-based control is also done through Actin. Remote video is established using Energid's smartCodec. Control is input in Georgia and transmitted to the robot in Massachusetts.

Great to see support coming from RED so quickly for FCS 3. Now you can transcode R3D footage to the new ProRes codecs and have a ProRes 4444 sequence for RED footage. Also Color is now updated to export 4k res files at full debayer quality... before this update you could only do half res at 2k.
This is huge for color accuracy: "If youʼre rendering native RED QuickTime media in Final Cut Pro, and your sequence is set to Apple ProRes 4444, then the RED media will be decoded as YʼCbCr image data with 4:4:4 chroma sampling. Apple ProRes RGB or YʼCbCr image data, but always at 4:4:4."

For the past 2 days I have been testing my new Nikon P1000 camera out in my yard and neighborhood. I am very impressed. You have to haul a 3.5 lb camera and a hefty tripod. I used my Manfrotto 3130 tripod with a fluid head that weighs 8 lbs for telephoto shots. The fluid head facilitates video pans, but even it drifted down while shooting at far out lengths such as 3000 mm indicating a need for counter weights such as sand bags or a heavier duty tripod. You also have to use a remote control for shutter depressions and controlling the camera. I purchased a Nikon ML-L7 remote which did the job very well.
The Coolpix P1000 does not use .nef for raw files. It uses .nrw format. I could not use Adobe PS CS6 to read these files. I started saving files in both raw and jpg formats instead of raw exclusively as I do on my Nikon DLSR camera. I had to download Nikon Capture NX-D which came with Nikon Picture Control and Nikon Transfer 2 which I have not tested yet. I Downloaded and installed a Nikon NRW codec. I could not see NRW files in Photoshop CS6, Adobe Bridge CS6 or View NX V2. But I could see them in Capture NX-D, Windows photos, Win Explorer, Win movie Maker, Photo Gallery and Win Photo Viewer.
It pays to purchase a 77 mm clear filter cover because the possibility of scratching the huge lens looms very high.
The Jpg image size is stored in a 12:9 ratio. My other Nikon cameras are sized in a12:8 ratio. Also many functions are accessed by menu rather than buttons common on Nikon DLSR’s.
I have not tested the bird or moon modes on the P1000 yet, but they look promising on paper.
All in all I am very pleased with the Nikon P1000 and look forward to having a lot of fun with it, especially for birding.

Sorry to all that like some variation to updates.......But I choose to stick with these Great Crested Grebes. Also sorry for the chap next to me who wanted to keep talking all the time!
This is the first time apart from on the TV that I've seen the mating courtship between Grebes, and all the posturing and mimicking that goes on before mating.
It is complex...... but in my eyes only because of the mimicking, there seemed no pattern apart from one must follow exactly as the leader did. Apart from all the normal head shaking and bending and standing in the water. I noticed when one dived and came up with some muddy vegetation the other followed suit, they were about 15ft apart and then raced at each other to mimic the same standing and head dance but with the vegetation in their beaks. As I said to me it looks like it's a courtship of follow my leader.
Until the final moments then it's all about the female sending out a clear message that she's ready and it's time. First she stands high with her back arched and head down facing the water to give a clear message she's nearly ready, then she lays almost flat with her back to the male. Then it's all down to him...............I've uploaded a short clip of mating ( again sorry for the video Codec speeding it up slightly, makes it look to comic ) but you can see in the video he gets it just a little wrong the first time..........
But on his defence, a week ago this mound was almost on dry ground and now it's a wet muddy mess, it was looking like a makings of a nest.............they had fought hard against other pairs for this ground. Then started making what looked like a nest on almost dry ground..............
I'll try and keep my peace about this.........this mill pond is on a nature reserve but the water level is controlled by the Environment agency, so they the open and close the sluices gates when they have a need. So these grebes made their nest on a place that they thought was dry and then the E A come along and close the gates and flood the area........ The warden said they never ask, they just drain water or back it up when ever they like. This Is the sort of thing that happens when you let the Environment Agency be run by bean counters and not an environmentalist! ( Sorry! )
