The pearl coating on the shell off this fossil ammonite still refracts a rainbow of colors despite being many millions of years old. In the Milwaukee Public Museum collection.
A tranquil morning with the mist rolling of the lake into the scene. The Ivy caught my eye to this scene covering the tree to the right. The light did the rest.
This staircase leads to the lake view at Sheboygan's Blue Harbor Resort. During a non-pandemic summer many wedding ceremonies focus on it. In winter months, it's not used very often. I took this photo before our artic air arrived.
With a nice coating of snow falling over the Lake District I thought I'd get a few days shooting in up here, I'd set my alarm for 0430 this morning to shoot sunrise at Tarn Hows, however that went pear shaped as when I woke up in Lancashire it was already light... I'd set the alarm for the right time alright, but the completely wrong day... hey ho!
Getting up here a lot later than planned I decided to try this location as the light looked pretty decent and not harsh at all, the walk over to here was interesting as it was like an ice rink, the tripod comes in really handy as a giant walking stick and saved me a good few times from tumbling around the place, the shot from down at the tarn (while nice), was a little bit flat so I decided to shoot from higher up where the sun was really hitting the grasses and gives a better view over to the Coniston Fells covered in snow, the sheep around here didn't seem bothered by the snow at all, it took me quite a while to defrost though!
The white clay in Mesquite Flat sand dunes and the white that settles after new ponds of rain runoff dry appear to be calcium from diatoms that lived in the prehistoric lakes in the area. Apparently Lake Manly had two unique species of the calcium-shelled freshwater plankton.
