SPANK INDUSTRIES is one of very few brands of its size in the world, with in-house design, development and manufacturing of our complete line of unique and exclusive components. We do not outsource the manufacture of our designs to industrial scale factories.

From delivery of the highest quality raw materials, we actually manufacture our product ourselves in our wholly owned factory, which is called FRATELLI INDUSTRIES.

SPANK INDUSTRIES rims are precision handcrafted in our own factory, FRATELLI INDUSTRIES. Each rim undergoes 12 quality control checks before it reaches you. In order to optimize the robust, yet light-weight to performance ratio you expect, SPANK INDUSTRIES has developed a number of patented technologies which begin with the design principles of our products, are implemented meticulously during our material processing and manufacturing methods, and ultimately tested in the field by our professional factory athletes before we make them available to you.

AT HOME ON THE EMERALD GREEN ISLAND OF TAIWAN

TAIWAN is arguably the bicycle manufacturing capital of the world, and has been for at least the past 30 years. With an estimated 90% of all MTB brands manufacturing their product here (frames, components, tires and accessories), it is no surprise that the quality of product manufactured here surpasses that found in most any other location globally.

The experience of the diverse bicycle manufacturing network in Taiwan is certainly unmatched anywhere else in the world.

Check the finer detail of the product you are using - regardless of where the brand HQ is based, chances are the parts are manufactured in Taiwan before being shipped to USA or Germany, for example, to be assembled.

SPANK is one of very few brands of its size in the world, with in-house design, development and manufacturing of our complete line of unique and exclusive components. We do not outsource the manufacture of our designs to industrial scale factories. From delivery of the highest quality raw materials, we actually manufacture our product ourselves in our wholly owned factory, which is called FRATELLI INDUSTRIES.

Founded by SPANK President Gavin Vos, FRATELLI now produces not only SPANK Components, but also designs and manufactures high end alloy rims for ‘top 10’ rim brands.

SPANK HQ is in the heart of the city of Taichung, TAIWAN. Taichung is a buzzing, modern harbor city of approximately 2.5 million people.

The city is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and faces the West Coast of the Island. Our HQ crew has access to local riding trails within 15mins drive from our base, and we participate almost weekly during the season in local trail clearing and building initiatives. In 2019, the Taiwan Mountain Bike Association was formally founded and affiliated to government bodies, marking the beginning of a coordinated strategy to increase the network of official mountain bike trails in Taiwan.

Our factory, FRATELLI INDUSTRIES, is situated snugly between high-grade export guava plantations and picturesque village temples. Our factory staff are all local to the village area and commute locally to FRATELLI by scooter and bicycle daily.

Located on Farm to Market road 2395 about 5 miles southwest of Seymour, here's a small bunch of cattle standing beside one of the gates to Bubba's ranch. We don't know Bubba... never met him, but do know that he has great taste in choosing the kind of sign most appropriate for marking his property.

After several days of thunderstorms and heavy rain made back country travel nearly impossible, we waited two days to let things dry out a bit, then drove up to Baylor County to hunt for interesting photo subjects. After several hours of very muddy exploring, which involved numerous episodes of "back-tracking" to get around impassible muddy stretches and road closures, we finally agreed that a two day "dry-out period" wasn't enough, so we headed back to Newcastle. A few miles south of this spot (Bubba's), FM2395 was blocked by flooding so we went back to Seymour and finished our trip on paved roads.

Bubba's sign is a typical example of a detailed western-themed metal sign created using CNC machining. Most are done in steel, but we've encountered some made with aluminum. Sometimes the aluminum signs are multicolored, the coloring being produced by selective anodizing.

Mounted in a shrink-fit toolholder and pre-set to length, this 1-inch carbide endmil is destined for one of the many 50-taper FMS systems in the Haas Automation machine shop. Used for both roughing and finishing, the 1-inch endmill is one of the workhorse tools in the Haas shop, with more than 300 being used every month, both new and reground.

While riding my bicycle.

A batch of worm shafts, fresh out of the parts washer, are ready for assembly into the cam boxes that drive every Haas side-mount tool changer. These precision drive shafts are machined in-house at Haas Automation.

These spindle shafts for Haas HRT310 rotary tables are halfway through the machining process, and ready for op 2. The shafts are machined complete – turned, bored, drilled, and tapped – in two setups on Haas ST-40 turning centers with live tooling. The ODs are then precision ground for the worm gear and bearings. The worm gear is hobbed after it is attached to the spindle to ensure the utmost concentricity between the large diameter bearings and the worm gear.

Looking like a machine tool Ferris wheel, the massive Haas 50-taper side-mount tool changer holds 50 tools, plus one in the spindle. It is optional on the EC-1600 and EC-1600ZT horizontal machining centers.

The assembly consists of a large-diameter cast aluminum center section, multiple cast aluminum outer segments, and 50 diecast aluminum tool pockets. Casting the parts in aluminum to near-net shape decreases weight, increases strength, and reduces the amount of machining required for each part.

These massive BOT turret assemblies are for the new Haas ST-55 large-through-bore turning centers, introduced at the end of 2014. The 12-station bolt-on style tool turrets accept 7.25" (184 mm) split boring bar holders, as well as standard BOT toolholders.

All Haas turrets are finish machined as a complete unit – assembled with the coupling, gearbox, and drive system – to ensure the absolute concentricity of each station with the turret’s true center.
