The Abbey was founded in 793, but much of the structure is Norman, as is the Tower, built with Roman bricks from the ruins of Verulanium. The Abbey was dissolved in 1593; it was the biggest Benedictine monastery in England. For whatever reason Henry 8th did not knock the Church down, it remains the second largest in England, with the longest nave (106m). That was really decent of him.
Even when the weather was a bit off, it was still worth getting up early before sunrise just to watch the morning unfold.
