The isolated Club Gill farm in the Hudes Hope Valley, Teesdale in strong summer sunshine under a cloudless deep blue sky. Part of the Coldberry Gutter and Coldberry Mine buidings behind and to the right and a flowering hay meadow in front.
Great big flakes like white ashes
at nightfall descending
abruptly everywhere
and vanishing
in this hand like the host
on somebody's put-out tongue, she
turns the crucifix over
to me, still warm
from her touch two years later
and thank you,
I say all alone—
vast whisp-whisp of wingbeats
awakens me and I look up
at a minute-long string of black geese
following low past the moon the white
course of the snow-covered river and
by the way thank You for
keeping Your face hidden, I
can hardly bear the beauty of this world.
— Franz Wright
On this night, no clouds. We had to get creative to find the "drama" in the scene. So instead of looking to the heavens for inspiration, we looked down.
It's blossom time for the cassia trees. The cloudless sulphur larvae love them and turn golden from eating them.

As of today this is my last butterfly of the season, which I felt was a strong season this year. Photographed at the Dixon Gardens in Memphis, Tennessee.
After some heavy rain, the sky was cloudless last night.

Some people love a clear sky, not me unless I am on holiday
Give me a few small clouds and I am a happy boy :-)
Finished work early, I was going to head for the coast but with no clouds in the sky I decided to stay closer to home so took a walk down the quayside for cloudless sun set.

Cloudless Sulphur butterflies are attracted to red tubular flowers. Amazingly, this individual found the one and only such flower among the senescing blooms in the garden.
I got some feedback from people that didn't like the clouds, so since I can't photoshop mother nature totally out, I took another shot of the skyline while i was out there.
Sky is a bit blotchy, not smooth enough, which often is a problem with strong sunlight but no clouds.

Chrysalis, Cloudless Sulphur butterfly
Santa Monica, CA
I went looking for the yellow caterpillar last week and found this on a tree in the area. I thought it looked as if it could be something interesting and photographed it. While it looks like a leaf, it was 3-dimensional so I knew it was not a leaf. I was later able to confirm that this is a chrysalis for a cloudless sulphur butterfly.
always nice to see on a 70 deg.F day in Feb. nectaring on Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans) in a pot that i haul in and out during winter, just in case a hungry butterfly or hummingbird should happen to stop by. ;)

Another visitor to my flower bed. This is the first time I've seen this kind here.

All of the Butterfly Photographs were taken at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History's "Butterflies Alive" Exhibit. The butterflies are housed in a greenhouse like structure. A group of twenty photographers, including me, was given complete access to the exhibit for an hour prior to the Museum opening to the public. During that time we were allowed to use tripods.
The cloudless sulfur butterfly, Phoebus sennae, is in the Peridae, or whites and yellows, family. It is a frequent visitor to butterfly gardens. It moves rapidly through the garden and if approached it will generally fly away quite rapidly. The cloudless sulfur is a frequent visitor to butterfly gardens, and its favorite flower color is red. It moves rapidly through the garden in search of nectar and larval food plants. If approached it will generally fly for quite a distance before coming to rest.
It is a rather large butterfly, 2 1/8 - 3 inches in size. The male is clear yellow above and yellow to mottled with reddish brown below. The female is lemon-yellow to pale yellow, almost white, on both surfaces, with slight amounts of black markings along the wing margins.

A couple of Cloudless Sulphurs and a a lone, tattered Monarch were all I saw today in the Dixon Gardens. It's somewhat depressing to see the butterfly season come to an end.
The female has a large patch on the front wing which is black when seen on the dorsal surface. The male has a smaller marking at this spot.
