Backlit storm clouds contrast against a blue sky

Dramatic cloud formations hang over the Hope Valley cement works. The setting sun backlights and is diffused into beams of light and creates a subtle pink colour to the sky in the distance.

Was a great sight to see this thunder head from a distance. I love how the sun lit up the clouds. Another great sight here in Burkina Faso. I belive this is a cumulonimbus incus cloud. Help from wiki of course...

When out and about with a friend on a particular cloudy day, we spotted this unusual rainbow cloud.

Today, I noted another Flickr photographer saw a similar scene and posted information about the phenomena. Thanks Alexandra.

From Alexandra Rudge

"Iridescent clouds, known as "fire rainbows" or "rainbow clouds," occur when sunlight diffracts off water droplets in the atmosphere. And the recipe for these heavenly sights is actually pretty simple.

What happens is that the cumulus cloud, boiling upwards, pushes the air layers above it higher and higher. As the air gets pushed upwards, it expands and cools. And sometimes moisture in that air suddenly condenses into tiny droplets to form a cap cloud.

This "cap"—which scientists call a "pileus"—is the source of the brilliant spectacle.

The droplets in the cap cloud scatter sunlight to form the gorgeous colors."

As taken over Pagham Harbour never seen a cloud like this (not a vapour trail to low.)

On the way from Hualien to Taipei, snuck out the Holga and took a few shots out the window as the plane broke through the cloud cover. The stewardess kind of freaked out when she saw me taking pictures. I guess she thought I was breaking the new electronics rule of domestric flights. If you look closely, you can see the shadow of the plane.

A snap from our drive back from Milton Keynes via the 'country route'. :)

Epic pre dawn sky this morning! Our first NLC's this year!

Even though we live in a LP area, we were able to photograph these magnificent rare and beautiful clouds!

Keep looking up!

A slightly different view of the Jurassic Coast taken from just above Mupe Bay. The day went through one of those spells of sunshine mixed with cloud, giving some rather nice spotlights which on this occasion picked out Flower's Barrow and Worbarrow Bay across the water. With that wonderful cloud formation, I couldn't resist a slightly off the wall composition :)!

Worth viewing on black I think.

Hope you are having a good week everyone.

Here's a link to my latest BLOG entry.

My theme is storms lately. Its been a couple of days of stormy weather here in western South Dakota. This was Sunday night over Spearfish and Lookout Mt. The lightening was the most intense we have had so far this summer!

It reminds me of what the earth looks like from space--but inverted.

Quasi con invidia leggo le opere dei miei contemporanei

su divorzi, addii, il dolore delle separazioni;

sofferenza, nuovi inizi, piccole morti;

lettere lette e bruciate, bruciare e leggere, fuoco e cultura,

ira e disperazione – magnifica materia per una poesia riuscita;

It's almost time for spring and more storm chasing opportunities. This storm was a major system and many of the "Big Chase Teams" were lined up for this one. It did not product a tornado, but had a great wall cloud. About 35 minutes after I made this image, there was 2 inches of marble sized hail produced 10 miles to the north.

I recently viewed some awsome BW storm clouds I found on Twitter, and they appeared to be done in Infrared. They turned out very ominus looking, so I wanted to try using some of the plug-ins to see if I could duplicate that. The BW version did not look that great, but NIK's IR has several versions on a dropdown, I thought this one looked really awsome.

Clouds over fields in Idaho.

This shot is from a road trip in June to the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. We came back through Idaho and saw some fascinating clouds and beautiful fields. Not sure exactly where this was, but the west side of the Grand Teton Mountains would be in the distance off the right side of the frame.
