So from the shot uploaded yesterday, I had clambered up Red Pike in the pouring rain, reaching the cloud base at Bleaberry Tarn. The whole of teh High Stile ridge was a complete white out, map & compass all the way. Descending off of High Crag, I finally found daylight again when I got to Gamlin End & I was finally rewarded with sight of Seat, Haystacks & Fleetwith Pike which formed the resty of my route for the day.

I very rarely get out into the Peak District in these conditions so made a special effort yesterday. The aim was to spend some time amongst the trees and try to find some simpler compositions - with the mist helping to clear the background of clutter.

The cloud base was actually quite high up, so only once I got out of the top of Padley Gorge was it possible to do this - but once there I like to think I made the most of it. This set of photos consists of pretty much every single photo I took up there (I've only left 3 out, for now) - so I am more than happy with my success rate (I would worry that I'm becoming one of those photographers who looks calm and collected... a bit pretentious, looking down on those who don't know the one and only composition they want weeks beforehand... but I'm sure the next sunrise will fix that - leaving me running around like a headless chicken again).

There's a third part of this waterfall hiding up there in the cloud.... I think the top of Newlands Pass is just over 1,000 feet, so I guess that was the cloud base on Monday!

Anyway, this was the location for our final holiday lunch (safely inside a car, out of the cloud) before heading home. I miss the hills already.

Video of adventure

youtu.be/-FwnYEyoNjg

It was the week before Christmas and I had to use up my remaining holiday entitlement before the end of the year. With the kids at school and my better half working, I had a week to play

Monday had seen me head for a day trip to Ardgour and Tuesday was an indoor day as a large Atlantic weather system swept over Scotland. The forecast for the rest of the week was changeable across Scotland – apart from the far north! So decision made – I was headed for Sutherland! Leaving the house at 6am, I arrived on the shoes of Loch Merkland four hours later at 10am. At this time of the year the days re short (an even shorter the further north you go) so I was aware I needed to get cracking and I had decided on Ben Hee as it would fit in with me getting back before dark. The plan there after was to enjoy some carlife (;)) and spend the next three days in this area.

The forecast was looking good and I set off in glorious sunshine with little wind. Numerous herds of deer greeted me as I headed up the track and towards the Allt Coire a’ Chruiteir burn. The skies were still blue but as the summit of Ben Hee came into view I noticed it was capped in cloud, which was skudding over the summit . The path was ok, but had been eroded away by the burn in places, but I wasn’t complaining as it was dry and nicer than the rest of Scotland. Once out of the wee glen the winds picked up and it was cold!! The pull into the cloud and towards the summit was also the freezing level and a white rim coated the rocks as I approached the cloud capped summit of Ben Hee.

As opposed to coming back down the same way, I decided to drop down over Sail Gharb and hoped to snap a photo of Loch an t-Seilg. I wasn’t sure whether the cloud base would enable this , however the views soon opened out and the views over to Ben Hope and Ben Loyal were fabulous. I was a bit jealous as these near bye peaks were cloud free. A few more snaps and I was soon chasing the unset down the hill to get back to the car before nightfall.

Back at the car and I found a larger parking area to spend a cold night in the car before another adventure on the Thursday 

If looking for the best hard drive encryption software for Windows, Microsoft BitLocker is the ideal choice. It is a full-volume encryption tool that uses the AES encryption algorithm to ensure complete data protection. However, managing BitLocker's implementation is itself challenging, which can be simplified with the centralized cloud-based tool-BitTruster.

The weather was forecast to be pretty awful throughout the entire of the UK this weekend. Regardless of where we decided to visit we knew that there was greater than 90% chance of rain with a cloud base of 300-500m ASL. Pants!

For a change, we decided to head to my Dad's place in North West Cumbria.

Having been there before, I decided it'd be nice for me to take gemma to Crummock Water, famous for its leaping salmon in the autumn. After capturing a few shots at Crummock, we walked back to the car along the river Cocker.

(Taken from similar viewpoint to previous image taken on 1st.)

It should be noted that the blowing snow was from the ground only.

No snow had yet started to fall from the thickening frontal cloud layers.

Clearly, conditions become many times worse when fresh snowfall commences and the main cloud base lowers onto the mountains themselves to give a true whiteout.

Extremely difficult conditions which only the seasoned Cairngorm worker/climber/skier will not be shocked by.

Wind speeds of up to 175mph have been recorded on Cairngorm mountain near here. As a (now retired) meteorologist who first visited here in 1964, I can confirm that wind speeds are often much higher than the theoretical strength given by isobaric weather charts. The wind and windchill must never be underestimated when planning trips here, particularly if you have never personally experienced what can happen when the weather deteriorates.

Many have died of exposure in this beautiful but challenging region. A young German girl even succumbed to exposure in the month of August after her father took her across the plateau in wet weather.

A couple of weeks ago was the 40th anniversary of Scotland's worst mountaineering tragedy.

Even more sad was that seven teenagers (14-18 years of age) - who had put their lives and trust in more experienced, but still relatively young, leaders - who had shown a good deal of ignorance and bravado - were the innocent victims who were led onto the plateau (straight ahead in picture on top of head wall of coire), where they perished during 48 hours or so of smothering, drifting snow, wind speeds up to storm force, and sub-zero temperatures.

Relatively poor communications in those days meant that, though they set out onto the plateau in the early afternoon of a Saturday, they were not reported missing until later on Sunday and an organised search in appalling conditions was not able to be co-ordinated until Sunday night.

The HS748. Lovely aircraft. 1994, Te Anau airfield, waiting for one of these to arrive, the weather was a bit 'iffy' and the cloud base was low, but this stalwart machine and it's equally stalwart pilot arrived to take us to Queensland. Top man! This brochure was in the waiting room. Looking back, the pride in their aircraft strikes me. I've never seen anything like this in the UK. It contains all the information I want to know! Thank you. Mount Cook Airlines!

Pollution/haze layer below cloud base. Taken early afternoon, This evening it will rain with strong winds!

Included out of interest (and because Amy Lloyd has nagged me) these are my 'press day' shots from an early Fighter Meet at North Weald, probably Fighter Meet '90 or '91. They are poor quality and had to be scanned from prints as the negatives were even worse.

The only current female Spitfire pilot, Carolyn Grace, was there with her former D-Day Spitfire Mark IX. This aircraft shot down a JU88 on D-Day and was subsequently turned into a two-seater.

One of the Hannahs, probably Mark Hannah, staged a couple of low fly-bys in a De Haviland Vampire. How low? The grass around us 'cracked' audibly every time he passed. I also met Gary Numan and had a long chat with him while another reporter from a rival newspaper was kicking me in the ankle and trying to get me to shut-up about aeroplanes so she could ask him about his latest album.

The best bit was the flight in the PBY Catalina. They took the press up in the Cat and Carolyn Grace flew alongside of each machine-gun blister and allowed us to do air-to-air photography. We were just on the edge of the cloud base so the results were milky, at best, but i have just run them through Photoshop to improve the content and contrast.

Remember, all these are scanned from 35mm postcard-sized prints.

Madonna and Child

FILIPINO

17th Century

Solid Ivory with traces of gilding and polychromy.

Heads of Virgin and child replaced. Repair to hand of Nino.

Provenance: Collection of Dr. Porfirio J. and Mrs. Socorro Rodriguez Callo

Purchased from Likhâ Antiques.

A solid ivory figure of the Madonna and Child carved during the 17th century. The Madonna stands on an "Ensaymada" (brioche) cloud base typical of early renditions of the Mother and Child. On this image, there is no angel or putti present. The Virgin's gown crosses her body laterally at the knees, folds gracefully backwards and falls in agitated folds at her feet. The Virgin is shown clasping the foot of the child typical of similar image of the period. This feature shows the influence of the Spanish sculptor Juan Martinez Montanes.

The telltale "tuck" or "suksuk" indicating this image's Philippine provenace is very much evident in this example. National Musuem sticker present in back as well as an inventory label from Likhâ.

Many similar renditions of the Madonna and Child made during the 17th century are published in: Jose, R. T. (1990). Images of faith: Religious ivory carvings from the Philippines. Pacific Asia Museum: Pasadena, CA, pp 65 - 70, 114 - 115.

The HOBOnet TEROS 21 Sensor is designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, and it doesn’t require calibration for different soil types or salinity.

The HOBOnet system is a cost-effective and scalable option for web-enabled monitoring of field conditions for applications such as crop management, research, and greenhouse operations. And because it’s wireless, you can deploy a network of sensors to easily monitor multiple points with a single system, while avoiding the risk of long cables that can interfere with field operations and are potentially vulnerable to nearby lightning strikes.

Sensors are easily linked to the network, and data can be accessed through HOBOlink®, Onset's innovative cloud-based software platform.
