Powered by a Meccano clockwork motor (so there can be no cheating) this Continously Variable Ratio gearbos does just that. A smooth change of speed from about 80 rpm up to 1200 rpm simply by moving a roller across the faces of the two large blue discs.

In time for the summer school holidays, the July 1960 Meccano Magazine announced the return of the Hornby Speedboat range after an absence of over 20 years. Production of the original range of clockwork-powered tinplate boats had been suspended at the outbreak of World War II. The revived range used modern plastic mouldings and comprised three styles, including the two advertised here.

The Hornby Speedboat range was later augmented by a battery-powered model, but the rationalisation that followed the Lines Brothers’ takeover in 1964 marked the final demise of the clockwork boats.

A nice use of an Erector Set. A 3 engine biplane was made, the propellers being driven by an old wind up clock works. One propeller is powered and the others run off a pulley and belt arrangement.

The car, a really nice use of curved Erector pieces to give a framework body to an old race car. It has a model airplane engine in it, driving a set of rear gears. It has steel Erector Set wheels.

The Clockwork Legion's motives are unknown, but they are spreading rampantly and converting the wasted frames of battle into efficient new machines of surprising quality.

This one is converted from an enemy military scout/sniper frame.

A Clockwork Orange at Dragon Con 2013

I found this wall clock from about 1910 in the classifieds and got it for little money. It didn't work as the spring was broken so I had to take it apart. The only problem problem was I had never done this before. So I bought a book and learned how pendulum clocks work, took it apart, cleaned it up, repaired the spring, reassembled it, oiled it and then scratched my head why that darn thing won't keep ticking. I spent two more days trying all kinds of adjustments until I developed a kind of feeling what the problem was. Now it is hanging on the wall and merrily ticks along.
