I spent a delightful Saturday with the Famous Flickr Five+ Group in the Yarra Valley, where we visited the picturesque Alowyn Gardens, which I had never heard of before, before having luncheon at the Yarrawood Winery.

The Alowyn Gardens are just outside Yarra Glen, east of Melbourne, in wine making country. The Alowyn Gardens started as weed and blackberry infested paddocks that were formerly part of a horse stud. The land was cleared in 1997 before revitalisation of the soil was conducted. Two years later in 1999 the first tree was planted. Today the Alowyn Gardens are well established, and provide an informative and educational experience for visitors. It has been designed with shade and comfort in mind. Plant names are on view to educate visitors about the gardens. The gardens have one of the largest Japanese Wisteria arbours as their centrepiece. Off it visitors may wander through seven very different styles of gardens, from the formal to the informal, European to Australian. The Native Garden is based on Australian plantings and features a dam and wetland area for animals, including a profusion of frogs and a great deal of birdlife. The Display Garden is a collection of courtyards and small gardens featuring collections of interesting plantings. The idea of the Display garden is to demonstrate what can be achieved in small spaces. The Edible Garden as the name suggests, shows that kitchen gardens can be beautiful as well as functional with rows of fruit trees, vegetable and medicinal gardens and a number of edible flowers that are both tasty and beautiful. The Birch and Casuarina Forest offers a woodland with enchanting hidden dells and contains a historical miner's hut. The Perennial Border contains herbaceous plants which are tough and hardy, survive with minimal work and are able to cope with Australia's hot summers and cold Yarra Valley winters. The Parterre Garden is based on the 15th Century French Renaissance design principles of low formal hedges formed into patterns. The French Provincial Garden is the largest of all the gardens and is surrounded by avenues of Chinese Elm, Crab Apple and Canadian Maple trees. It has large lawns, and a long water feature that runs the width of the garden.

Northern Hemisphere winters provide a treasure trove of not only long nights with dark skies, but bright stars that populate the heavens too. It may seem like the stars are brighter simply because the air is drier during the winter months, but the fact is, there really are a lot more stars that are brighter. The reason for this is when we look towards the familiar constellation of Orion we are actually looking towards one of our galaxy's spiral arms that we obviously call the 'Orion Arm'. The sky around Orion is filled with gas. Most is dark and invisible but in some places where stars illuminate it we see the gas.

During winter, in the southern and western part of the sky, you can see a lot of bright stars. Of course the most obvious is Orion, with four bright stars forming a quadrangle around three 2nd magnitude stars nearly in a straight line. This is Orion the Hunter; to the upper left is the bright star Betelgeuse, which looks slightly orange, and to the lower right is the bluish-white star Rigel. In-between these, Orion's three belt stars are difficult to miss, as they are similar in brightness to each other, and just three degrees across. If we go down and to the left of these “belt” stars about 20 degrees, we will find the brightest star in the sky, Sirius, but here it is hidden behind one of the poles. This star is the lead star of Canis Major, the Big Dog of Orion. To the east and above Sirius at this time of year is another 1st magnitude star, Procyon of Canis Minor. There are just two stars that really make up this small, unremarkable constellation.

The structure on the ground is play equipment at Crabtree Plantation which was originally part of the Hackwood Estate and evidence of the historical significance of this site can still be seen in the Bolton Arch, through which lies the main entrance to Crabtree. The woodland is a mixture of oak, horse chestnut, sycamore and ash, with many informal footpaths. The grassland is managed for flowering plants.

Crabtree is a hugely important site for butterflies due to its south facing position, woodland and grassland habitat which attracts many different varieties. The elms are of particular importance as they are the favoured resting and breeding place for the beautiful and rare White Letter Hairstreak. Each summer a local resident and member of Butterfly Conservation carries out a regular survey of the site and last year recorded three in one day.

Crabtree Plantation is a good place for walking with panoramic views of Basingstoke. This nature reserve of open space and partial woodland attracts lots of dog walkers, families and kite flyers due to it’s open location. Recently this children’s play area was added including a zip line, climbing frame and swings.

Our school recently hosted a Basket-ball coaching exhibition and made use of it to promote our own programmes (and a couple of other complementary businesses).

As usual the spectators provided as many interesting photos as the players! This brother and sister (and a few other kids) were too busy enjoying the playground to pay much attention to the Basketball.

The playground apparatus dominates the scene - the pylons are merely a blurred backdrop.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design Holloway, North London. Here are the details on the project

The Batchelor Pad Garden in Holloway, North London

BRIEF:

Earth Designs were contacted by this client to enquire about a design for his urban garden in North London in the spring of 2008. At the time the client decided to contract another design company and we did not hear anything further for a year. The client subsequently contacted us to request a quote based on the design that he had commissioned from our competitor. We were able to undercut the quoted price by a significant margin and consequently the client was happy to contract the project.

SOLUTION:

The garden is a north facing with very limited access and is located to the rear of a five storey converted Victorian school building. Due to its location, all materials needed to be transferred by hand through the building, down a flight of stairs, through several doors and round several corners. The road adjacent to the property is very busy, making deliveries difficult and potential crane hire extremely expensive. However, Earth Designs have completed many gardens with limited access and so we have become have become adept at finding the best and least disruptive ways of transporting substantial amounts of materials and waste to and from a space. The design included a built-in hot tub which was to be a feature of the space. However, the specifications of the spa meant that it would be impossible transport through the property and therefore would need to be lifted by crane over the 5 storey property. This would have been cost preclusive, so we were able to advise the client on alternative hot tub selection and offer electrical installation and project management of the hot tub installation. The client also requested additional items beyond the contracted work, which we were happy to facilitate.

The garden itself was well designed, with raised rendered block beds to the rear of the garden and two chunky pergolas with shade sail covers providing privacy from the flats above. The garden was paved throughout with Indian grey sandstone in a random pattern.

TESTIMONIAL:

Earth Designs did a fantastic job with my garden and made what I thought was going to be a stressful process amazingly easy. They were flexible when I changed the brief after the project had got underway, and found creative solutions to any issues that arose during the build. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for the quality of their work, attention to detail, project management and value for money.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Harrow, No

rth West London. Here are the details on the project

The Modern Family Garden in

Harrow, North West London

BRIEF:

The clients had recently extended and renovated the kitchen of the property and wanted a stylish garden match the house interior. The main requirements for the garden were a place for relaxation and entertainment plus a play area, incorporating a climbing frame, for their two children. There is a line of conifers at the back of the garden which dominates the space although it does offer screening from the road beyond.

SOLUTION:

The garden combines functionality and contemporary elegance to create an unusual and usable space. It is divided into three areas, each with a distinct purpose and ambiance.

The first section, adjoining the house, is dedicated to relaxation and entertainment. Directly outside the patio doors is an area of oak decking, chosen to echo the floor of the kitchen. This deck is large enough to accommodate a weatherproof rattan sofa. Along the right side of this section is an outdoor dining area. Surfaced with Mint Fossil sandstone, this area benefits from a substantial dining table and benches constructed from railway sleepers.

The second, central area of the garden is planted with low maintenance architectural plants. Four screens of various dimensions emerge from the planting and help to obscure the rear of the space from view. Each screen features a different material: wooden panelling, textured stone tiles, stainless steel mesh and orange Perspex. A stainless steel water blade installed on one of the screens gives the space a contemporary feel that emulates the interior of the house.

To the rear of the garden the final section is home to the children’s large timber climbing fort and a storage unit for the family’s bicycles. This section is hidden from view by a long timber screen. Artificial lawn provides an extremely low maintenance and safe surface beneath the climbing frame. The existing row of conifers at the back of the garden was retained to provide a backdrop to the garden and privacy from the road beyond.

TESTIMONIALS:

We can not praise the work of Earth Designs highly enough. Our new garden takes our breath away. The design process was fun and interactive, the build professional and thorough. They were patient and accommodating with our constant fiddling with mind changes.

Top quality work. Highly recommended.

George's Spaceship Playzone – Indoor Play Centre - designed, manufactured and installed by Iplayco

Quotede by Paulton's Park:

Galaxies of fun indoor fun all year round no matter what the weather! Rocket to the moon and climb into George's Spaceship then zoom out of the tube slide after reaching the top. Slip off your shoes and zig zag through the obstacle run inside the soft play zone, climb the moonwalk ramp and look out from Peppa's Balloon when you reach the top! Glide down one of the bright green slides before going back for more!

Visit the Recycle Centre and catch the soft balls exploding from the ball volcano, before recycling them back into the collection buckets where they are vacuumed up and reused.

The Toddler Picnic Area is especially designed for the little ones (aged 2-3), with a triangle decks climb, bumpers and the Tree House Rooftop.

Parents can relax whilst the little ones play and pick up a snack from Daddy Pig's Big Tummy Café.
