Clevedon Pier is a seaside pier in the town of Clevedon, Somerset, England on the east shore of the Severn Estuary. It has been described by Sir John Betjeman, as "the most beautiful pier in England" and was designated a Grade I listed building in 2001.[1]

The pier was built during the 1860s to attract tourists and provide a ferry port for rail passengers to South Wales. The pier is 312 m (1,024 ft) long and consists of eight spans supported by steel rails covered by wooden decking, with a pavilion on the pier head.

The pier opened in 1869 and served as an embarkation point for paddle steamer excursions for almost exactly 100 years. Two of the spans collapsed during stress testing in 1970 and demolition was proposed, but local fund raising and heritage grants allowed the pier to be dismantled for restoration and reassembled. It reopened in 1989, and ten years later was awarded the Pier of the Year from the National Piers Society, and a Civic Trust Award. The pier now, once again, offers a landing stage for steamers and is a popular attraction for tourists and anglers.

I've named this contrasts beacause the challenge I set myself was to capture this long exposure (c. 130 seconds) and maintain detail in the dark rocky area. As this area covers half the scene I didn't want a total black out zone here! I hope that I have achieved this and without significant LE noise.

Clevedon Court was built in 1320 by the de Clyvedon family and contains many later additions. The 14th-century manor house nestled between Bristol and the North Somerset coast with rich literary connections to Tennyson and Thackeray.

The property boasts an 18th-century terraced garden, described by Gertrude Jekyll as ‘one of the noblest ranges of terraced walls in England’. The house has been in the care of the National Trust since 1961.

It`s taken me a while to get round to processing this image of Clevedon pier . I managed to get a vantage spot above the cafe there and then crop the image to bring the pier more into the frame .

Another image i have just got round to editing.

Amazing how a bit of Sun can transform the Bristol Channel.

A rocky scene at the beach with Clevedon's Victorian Pier leading out into the Bristol Channel.

I think the mono treatment helps bring out the textures in the rocks, stones and sky in this sunset scene.

Clevedon Pier - Clevedon, Somerset

We decided to take an impromptu drive to Clevedon Pier in North Somerset. There wasn't much going on in the sky and the tide was heading out quick so I was losing the foreground interest. This pretty much forced me to opt for a fine art image with a long exposure.

As always, all my images are available to purchase through my website so why not pop along there and take a look.

Taken from the beach at Clevedon

A long, pebble beach that runs south-west from Clevedon, an old Victorian seaside resort at the mouth of the River Severn.

I came here in February and, unfortunately, none of my picture of the pier from the beach were quite enough in focus. Then we visited the pier itself and found that I couldn't take my tripod onto the pier. So, I had to make do with this handheld shot.

An overcast and damp day led to a last minute decision to go to Clevedon Marine Lake to do some minimalist/abstract photography. This is one of 4 images from the 2 hours spent there and shows a minimalist long exposure of a curved path which crosses the Lake. Fuji film X-T10, Fuji 18-55mm f2.8-4 R LM OIS - ISO200/f16/30secs.

Never managed to get the kind of light I'm looking for in Clevedon. However, this was the only 15 minutes of sun I saw all of last weekend, so I went with it.

Messy beaches make for an editing nightmare!

A mighty fine pier indeed!

Clevedon Pier is a seaside pier at the east shore of the Severn Estuary.

The sun sets serenely over Clevedon pier... as well as Englands world cup dreams for another 4 years

Addendum: For what it's worth like many people I have many sunset photos taken at a wide angle where the sun itself becomes rather small in the frame. For this, as I had an interesting subject at a reasonable distance I chose to go telephoto in order to make the sun itself appear as a larger part of the composition. I did of course grab a few other shots at the same time taken at wider angles incorporating more of the pier and less of the sun. I'll even upload one or two of them sometime.

See where this picture was taken. [?]

Clevedon pier stretches gracefully 850 ft into the Bristol Channel. Like all piers it was created primarily as a landing stage for steamers and was constructed partly from discarded railway track used by Isambard Kingdom Brunel on the Great Western Railway. Costing £12,000 to build it opened on Easter Monday 1869. When the owners got into financial difficulties its largest shareholder Sir Arthur Elton purchased the pier for £700 and donated it to the local council.

In January 2001, Clevedon Pier was up-graded from a Grade 2* listed structure to a Grade 1.

The only other Pier which has achieved Grade 1 Listing is the Brighton West Pier, however it is not open to the public as the structure has suffered decay over a long period, partial collapse and a fire in 2002 which severely damaged the the pier head and buildings.

So, at present, Clevedon pier is the only structurally intact Grade 1 listed pier in the whole of the country.
