(And Then There Were None)

Just a little in-flight entertainment...

The early morning shadows have cleared just in time for ÖBB Class 1163, No.1163 012 'Hari'> to trundle through Villach Warmbad with a short freight.

The train has originated from the nearby expansive Villach Süd yard and is destined for Gummern where a large complex exists connected to the Calcium Carbonate/paper industry.

The lovely old stone bridge crossing over the crystal clear water of the River Derwent at Grange near Keswick in the Lake District.

Taken in Clear Creek Canyon, East of Idaho Springs in Colorado. The ice is starting to form around rocks and around the edges of the creek.

~Close your eyes, clear your heart...let it go~

Here is another from my brief trip to Colorado last fall. This is Clear Creek Falls. It's about 20-30 miles south of Lake City.

Trying out a new very interesting lens loaned to me by a friend recently. The lens is a TTartisan 100mm f2.8 prime that is a copy of an old Meyer Optik Goerlitz Trioplan lens produced in the 50s and 60s, renowned for its bubble bokeh. It’s a lovely lens and at certain distances and with the right subject it can produce the Trioplan magic. Here I’ve used a short extension tube to get in a little tighter but it really does throw the background out very nicely.

A clear and quiet night lingers over the valley on the NS Roanoke District. The only sounds are barking dogs and some occasional rustling in the nearby bushes. The aspect of the signal changes from red to yellow, indicating a lineup for an oncoming train. A few minutes later, the silence of the landscape is broken by the sound of a distant horn. The yellow aspect turns green just before NS train 201 clears the north end of the siding at Solitude. 201's headlights begin to paint the landscape as it rushes around the curve to meet the facing signals of Arcadia. "NS 201 clear Arcadia" is called out over the radio by the conductor. Moments later, the green falls down to a red as 201 zips into the night. The EOTD flashes past, indicating the end of the train, and the silence is soon restored for the sleeping folks of Arcadia, Virginia.

The air is clear right now. But we mourn for those who lost friends, family, homes. We experienced this in 1991 and can empathize - and also hope that people take seriously the menace of climate change while we can still do something to prevent it from getting worse.

Now after two rainy and stormy months I can wait until winter sets in with snow and some clear skies to start Aurora photography. Even though the Aurora can be photographed throughout the fall it lacks the interesting and characteristic snow on the foreground that I like in Aurora shots.

This is a shot from last March during a rare night of clear skies and active Aurora.

Since the winter is fast approaching I have written a short article about Aurora photography with focus on Iceland: Aurora Photography Tutorial

Thanks for looking.

Detail, Ford pickup truck (1940's?) parked in the Miami Design District. Rusty patina preserved with some 'rat rod' combo of waxing, buffing and protective clear coat lacquer spray? Or...?

The small aperture value has created this narrow depth of field, however, the flowers are clear through the glasses :)

A medium clear indication beckons Q365 around the corner at Deshler shortly after sunset.

On a cold clear morning, Providence and Worcester Railroad's Valley Falls based local PR3 is rounding the curve westbound at about MP 181.8 on Main 3 of Amtrak's New Haven Line main with a lengthy string of tanks for Univar and the Shell ethanol terminal. They are slowing as they approach Cranston Interlocking where they will cross over Mains 1 and 2 to the opposite side onto 6 Lead into Cranston Yard where they will access the freight only Harbor Junction Running Track to go about their work at the Port of Providence.

GP38-2s 2008 and 2006 are original to the road having been built new for the then only 7 year independent company by EMD in Dec. and Feb. 1980 respectively), and they still proudly wear their red and brown colors despite being a member of the Genesee and Wyoming family for almost seven years already.

My favorite scene is when calm water reflects what is around it. I found a perfect example while hiking around Lake George in the Mammoth Lake Region of the Eastern Sierra Nevada.

That is Crystal Crag on top, a rock climbers destination. On the right you can see some early fall color.

Note the log lying under the crystal clear water.

A "clear" signal is being displayed on the #1 main in downtown Brimfield, Indiana on NS' ex-LS&MS/NYC/PC/CR Chicago Line as train 24W (Chicago, IL, Ashland Yard to Harrisburg, PA stacks) approaches on the #2 main and passes under U.S. Hwy. #6. The NYC era Type G tri-light signals are still in service here.
