Ice and snow slowly transition to liquid water in a small, shallow tarn high above the Innvikfjorden and the town of Loen, Norway.

The climb up a different fjord on the previous day was significant enough that some in our party balked at repeating the effort so soon on its heels, so on this day we elected to plonk down our kroners and enjoy an effortless ride to the top of the Innvikfjorden via the Loen Skylift. The Skylift is a large gondola supported by only two towers, one at the beginning and one at the end. On the ride up, the angle of the lines is such that one is essentially hauled straight up a good portion of the cliff, providing quite a sensation of the heights. The top of the Skylift has a restaurant with an extraordinary view, and a ledge frequented by people wearing squirrel wingsuits to launch into the void, for what must be the mother of all adrenaline rushes. We witnessed several people preparing to make the leap, and I cannot say I was inspired to attempt such foolishness myself.

Seeking adventures on a somewhat less exciting scale, I had it in mind to walk up one of the peaks that is several kilometers from the top of the Skylift. Not long after setting off, we encountered more or less continuous snow cover, and it was clear that the route to the peak I wanted to ascend was steep and snowy enough that it would be dangerous without axe and crampons. Lacking such helpful instruments, I noticed a rock band that looked possible to climb up and around the steepest of the snow, but my wife put her foot down firmly and informed me she was not at all interested in such things, but that I was welcome to head up myself if I wanted. My two boys also demurred. Feeling that common sense might be percolating through the rest of my family, I gave up the idea and we set our sights on a somewhat closer, and reasonably safer overlook in a different direction. Along the way I discovered this small tarn, and I was captivated by the abrupt phase transition from solid to liquid that divides the frame.

This Sulphur-Crested_cockatoo finally took off after sitting on our Antenna for 5 mins, I was waiting and waiting practical looking straight up to get this underbelly shot. My poor neck wasn't to happy about it.

Tidying up and ended up making one of these. I think Umamen's one has a tighter radius, but this one used only clear parts. Haven't seen this before, but tell me if I'm wrong. 1x1 flat, round clear tiles used to connect.

With seaweed cultivation in full swing this summer, the island looks like Leyte’s version of the water world. Farm houses and drying platforms of various make and sizes, from small bamboo affairs not more than 20 meter square to large 400 square meter platforms made of concrete have mushroomed around the periphery that Dawahon probably has grown twice in land area. Such is reclamation Dawahon-style.

That clear, cold, clean mountain air after a winter storm passes through.

And there she sits, until the moon

Through half the clear blue sky will go;

And when the little breezes make

The waters of the pond to shake,

This is my other favorite beach in all the world; Findhorn Beach in northern Scotland, where I also happened to live for many happy years. I seem drawn to living near endless empty beaches with views out across the water to distant mountains, whether that's in NZ or here looking out across the Moray Firth to the Scottish Highlands north of Inverness. On opposite sides of the planet in opposite seasons and in very different environs they are both so similar in nature and light it's just amazing :-)

We went to Marshall's Beach near the Golden Gate bridge, San Francisco. A woman in a red dress and a men were walking out on the sandy beach and back at low tide.

Clear water in a rock pool along the rough Flø coastline.

During low tide these particular pools are filled with fresh water from a small stream.

From Sunday, Blue Angel # 5 did a brief recon mission to SF to scope out the fog before the jets were grounded and the show canceled. Likewise, Fat Albert, the C-130 support plane, remained on the ground.

We got to watch all 6 jets purge fuel for about 20 minutes before being towed off the tarmac.

Better luck next year!
