A Pennsylvania apartment complex hired ABT after a tragic event left one of the units uninhabitable due to biohazards.
On Saturday, June 22, volunteers flooded Masonville Cove at the first-ever Masonville Cove Field Day. A total of 71 people, eager to aid in the clean-up of this Baltimore City urban refuge, joined the Maryland Port Administration, Maryland Environmental Service, the National Aquarium and the Living Classrooms Foundation in this effort. Over 4,000 native shoreline grasses were planted, 10 bird boxes were installed and countless pieces of debris were removed from the urban wetland. After a hard day of work, the younger volunteers enjoyed fishing off the Masonville pier.
Congressman John Sarbanes kicked off the event with opening remarks, stressing the importance of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's No Child Left Inside Act. This act aims to increase environmental education and environmental literacy standards nationwide.
MES employees who helped out included Executive Director of Technical and Environmental Services Cece Donovan and Chief of Environmental Monitoring Jason Gillespie, along with Jason's twins, Colin and Caitlin.
Steady rain throughout the day has made a muddy job of hauling away the remains of Tawes Hall. This building has been demolished to make way for the construction of the Center for Communications and Information Technology (CCIT).

Cleaning up the Dominguez Channel at Artesia Transit Center. Over 14,000 volunteers took part in Coastal Cleanup Day in Los Angeles County, cleaning up beaches, parks, alleys, creeks, highways and storm drains at 69 different sites. Over 300,000 pounds of debris and recyclables were removed by the various environmental organizations, community groups, families, local businesses, faith-based organizations and students that took part. A scene repeated throughout much of Little Ferry and Moonachie NJ, homeowners place destroyed items out on the curb after Hurricane Sandy sent an unexpected storm surge of muddy water through these neighborhoods last week.
LOS ANGELES—Volunteers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District joined forces with hundreds of community volunteers along the Los Angeles River adjacent to Balboa Park in the Sepulveda Basin for the Friends of the Los Angeles River’s 25th La Gran Limpieza: The Great Los Angeles River Clean Up April 26.
The event was the kick-off of three Saturdays of planned volunteer clean ups, organized by FoLAR.
“It’s an excellent demonstration today of the partnership between non-governmental organizations, city government, and the federal government that are in place,” said Col. Kimberly Colloton, commander and district engineer of the Los Angeles District. “[This synergy is] what we can do together that far outnumbers what we each can do alone.”
“This river isn’t just about our future, it’s about where we came from,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who welcomed volunteers. “As you return to it [Los Angeles River] and clean those roots today, we also write a new chapter for what Los Angeles can and will be.”
Garcetti and Colloton joined more than 400 hundred volunteers from various community organizations as they removed plastic bags and debris from trees and river banks.
In addition to removing more than five truckloads of trash and shopping carts from the river, volunteers sorted and weighed about 90 pounds of plastic, aluminum cans, glass bottles, card board boxes and cigarette butts.
“It’s so great to have everybody out here today,” said the District’s Chief of Planning Division Joesphine Axt. “We got people from construction, planning, kids, stakeholders, the mayor and even my daughter together to have the opportunity to share love and concern about the river and wanting to see its improvement and actually to get something tangibly done.”
FoLAR will host two additional Saturday river cleanups: May 3 at Glendale Narrows sites and May 10 at lower river sites. Activities start at 9 am. See www.folar.org/cleanup for more information.

Staff and Conservation Jobs Corps members at Patapsco help cleanup the Avalon area after devastating flash floods rocked central Maryland on July 30, 2016.
These were used in the operation to clean up some of the contamination from the Chernobyl accident; they're still contaminated with radioactive particles, but not to the extent that they're dangerous to approach. Touching them would be inadvisable, though, as there are still dust particles on them, especially in areas that have been sheltered from the rain.

One of the several female firefighters that were on the teams at this response. And, most importantly, the "gals" were not relegated to outside, or menial jobs -- they were in the building just like the guys. In fact, when in full equipment, you can't tell the difference!!!
