Class of 2012 Cadet Matthew Howard sprints to his barracks as he seperates himself from a group of plebes. Cadets in the Class of 2012 practice patience as they begrudgingly accept the tradition of being accosted by plebes following the ring ceremony on Aug. 19. Plebes capture and surround the firsties while reciting the “Ring Poop” as follows: the "Ring Poop: "Oh my God, sir/madam! What a beautiful ring! What a crass mass of brass and glass! What a bold mold of rolled gold! See how it sparkles and shines! It must have cost you a fortune! May I touch it, please, sir/madam?" Since his sophomore year, Goodman has worked in the President’s Office, and as a senior was an intern to President Jim Yong Kim. In this position, he gained an appreciation for Dartmouth administrators. “They are thoughtful, committed, capable people and they care deeply about Dartmouth and its students.” Goodman is photographed at the Parkhurst administration building, which he calls this his “home away from home.” In the classroom, his economics courses taught him to make rigorous empirical arguments. “It’s a certain art to tease secrets from a banal looking dataset, or to distinguish legitimate causations from spurious correlations. The economics professors take joy in showing you the way.” Next year, he will work as a consultant at Oliver Wyman in Boston. (photo: Eli Burak '00)

Master of arts in liberal studies
O’Flaherty came to Dartmouth after earning her bachelor’s degree at Tulane University and working for filmmaking organizations in New Orleans and New York. “When I was looking at graduate schools, I had a very specific academic interest—cultural response to trauma and disaster—that ran across several disciplines. The MALS program appealed to me because I could tailor my plan of academic study to reflect this interest in a way that was incredibly rewarding and fruitful,” she says. O’Flaherty recently completed her master’s thesis, The Art of War: The Impact of Aesthetics in War Photography, which highlights her interest in visual narratives. While at Dartmouth, she was editor-in-chief of the academic journal MALS Quarterly, an international graduate student mentor, and a member of the Dartmouth Film Society. She was also on the executive board of the Graduate Student Council (GSC) and worked in the Arts and Sciences graduate office for the past two years. She was photographed in front of Wentworth Hall. At Branch Night, 239 cadets were selected to join Infantry—the most sought after of the 16 branches. Class of 2012 Cadet Timothy Tieng erupted with joy after discovering he was among those cadets.
“I’m feeling really great about this. It’s an amazing moment and everything was worth it,” Tieng said.
Tieng said he drew from all his experiences at West Point in determining what branch he wanted.
“I looked at the branch I thought was great and one I would be really good at,” he said. “After the multiple summer training experiences, I thought Infantry would be great.”
Later he donned an olive green infantry cap and joined his fellow future infantry officers in pinning the branch insignia to their uniform. Photo by Mike Strasser, West Point Public Affairs

At the conclusion of the Class of 2012 Graduation Parade May 25, cadets scattered to seek out family and friends. Graduation Week at West Point is filled with activities for visiting families and guests to share with their cadets—from concerts, receptions and religious services to award ceremonies and parades. The parade and pass in review would be the last one for the graduating class and signified a passing of leadership for the Corps of Cadets to the Class if 2013. The day began with an informal ceremony during morning formation to recognize the rising underclass cadets who will take on further leadership responsibilities following summer training. The day will end with a formal banquet for the Class of 2012 with Gen. Raymond Odierno, the 38th and current Chief of Staff of the Army, as guest speaker. Photo by Mike Strasser, USMA PAO

A time of unity for every class, Dartmouth’s summer term (one of four that make up the year-long “D-Plan”) is all about the rising juniors. Of the more than 1,100 undergraduates on campus this summer, about 90 percent are members of the Class of 2012. Every year parents are invited to take a look at the unique term--this year's Sophomore Family Weekend was held July 23-25, 2010. It included events such as a tour of Baker Library Tower, Open Houses at art studios, a presentation by President Jim Yong Kim, Contra Dancing, and a tour of the Connecticut River.
