Odissi (or Orissi) is the traditional style of dance that originated in the state of Orissa in Eastern India, where it was performed by the Maharis (temple dancers). It is one of the oldest surviving forms of dance, with evidence dating back to 2200 BC to be found in the caves of Khandagiri and Udayagiri in Orissa.

Odissi is characterised by its curvaceous movements, sculpturesque poses full of languid grace and an imposing demeanour at the same time.

In Hindu belief: the Apsaras were born from the "Churning Sea of Milk" when the mortal gods and demons combined their mights to churn the salt water to milk and milk to amrita (elixir of immortality). These are the Khmer Apsaras dancers, trained and performance almost unchanged since the time of Angkor.

Apsara

Cambodian apsara

Khmer classical dance

danse classique du Cambodge

In the Hindu Mahabharata, the apsaras were created from The Churning Sea Of Milk process, when the mortal gods and demons combined their mights to churn the sea water to milk, milk to amrita (elixir of immortality) in order to attain immortality.

This is Cambodian interpretation of the Apsaras dance, traditionally performed only for the Khmer royal court and temples as offering and communication to the gods by . Handed down and kept through generation of Khmer royal dynasties and bramins, for a period this dance was not accessible to the Khmer general population except on national and religious holidays until the French colonial era of Indochina in the 1900s.

Today in Cambodia, the dancers are mostly the products of Cambodia University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh where aspiring artists from the population are trained. The modern Apsara dance has changed very little since the time of Angkor as can be seen if you visit Siem Reap World Heritage Site where the Apsaras are immortalized by the carvings at Angkor Wat and on all other Khmer temples.

The role of white Apsara performer requires that she has no child, ideally unmarried.

Most importantly, the Khmer Royal Ballet or Khmer classical dance is part of Khmer national identity.

Bharatanatyam is a classical form of dance in India that is used to depict various stories from the Hindu mythology.
